Thank You To Our Local Sponsor: MAY 2015 Across Indiana this school year, more than 550 schools said they would help us in our mission to find a cure for blood cancers and improve the lives of our patients. Whether urban, suburban or rural, private or public, big or small, and regardless of socio-economic make up, students joined together to make a big difference. Schools have a variety of reasons for participating in Pennies for Patients. For some, the meaning is personal and painful. Such is the case with Franklin Township Middle School West in Indianapolis, who lost a classmate to leukemia last year. (Read more about their story on the back page). For others, it’s a matter of tradition, such as Clay Middle School in Carmel who has been participating for nearly 20 years and raised more than $150,000. Some schools participate because they want to teach their students that despite their circumstances they can give back, such as William Penn Elementary School 49 in Indianapolis who has a 100% free/reduced lunch rate. Still some schools are new to our program and participate simply because they were asked to. Regardless of the reason, we hope that you found the program enjoyable and worthwhile. Know that your participation and commitment to the program is never taken lightly and is always appreciated. Indiana schools are on target to raise more than $550,000 this year! On behalf of the staff of LLS, our Honored Heroes and all those fighting a blood cancer, THANK YOU! INDIANA SCHOOLS CONTINUE TO MAKE IMPACT PUTTING HEART INTO CAMPAIGNS Above: Honored Hero Luke returns to his former school, Geist Elementary, to read a favorite book, Chemo Crusaders, during its Pennies campaign. During this year’s School & Youth Programs nearly 27,000 schoolsa quarter of all schools across the countryengaged in meaningful service, leadership and helped save lives! Students connected with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) mission and collected spare change, made online donations, held talent shows, ran bake sales, taped their teachers to walls, partnered with community business, shaved heads, and so much more to raise money and make a difference in the lives of blood cancer patients. Because of this amazing work, donations from the 2014-2015 School & Youth Programs are expected to total over $28 million! Thanks to these efforts and those of the teachers, parents and communities that support these extraordinary students, LLS is able to help blood cancer patients and their families. A world without blood cancers is the LLS goal. And the millions of students who participated in this year’s programs are making an impact. Clay Middle School in Carmel has been a longtime supporter of Pennies for

Patients, raising more than $150,000 for LLS in its history which spans nearly 20

years. This year, Clay teamed up with the two other middle schools in Carmel—

Creekside Middle School and Carmel Middle School for a faculty vs. faculty charity

basketball game on January 23. Students at all three schools raised money in the

week leading up to the event and capped it off with an exciting night of basketball

games which included a team from the Carmel Police & Fire Departments. Two

Pennies for Patients Honored Heroes, Lauren, a freshman at Center Grove High

School and Quincy, a second-grader at Oaklandon Elementary were on hand to

serve as honored guests for the evening. Between the fundraising that took place

leading up the game and the proceeds from the game itself the three schools

together raised an amazing $20,633!

We are thankful for the support of

these three schools and for continuing

to bring awareness to our mission.

What’s New for 2015-2016? We are always looking to improve your fundraising experience and provide excellent support! Here is some of what you can expect to see during the next school year: Continuing development and promotion of online fundraising– schools

who share the online link raise more money for the LLS mission!

New options for high schools to participate. Planning a campaign at a high school will be more fun and easier than ever.

Emphasis on planning meetings and kickoff assemblies. Schools who meet with LLS staff to plan the campaign generally have more success as students/coordinators learn tips and ideas. Assemblies get the whole student body involved in understanding the mission!

Wal-Mart as a Coinstar location option. Previously, only Coinstar machines at Marsh and Kroger could be used.
