MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CHAIR

As we head into the final weeks of the 2014-2015 season, thereare still many wonderful performances to anticipate. AfterNobu’s wonderful performances here in the past, I am lookingforward to hearing him perform Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto.I also look forward to watching The Circus. Charlie Chaplin’sfilms are presented at their best with a live performance by theWSO. I am also intrigued by the dance performances we willbe able to see. Rusalka’s performances are always a treat andwe hear very good things about the Ballroom with a Twistprogram.

By now you have seen the brochure for the 2015-2016 season, and you have doubtlessly found many concerts that are appealing. The season offers awonderful balance of exciting Pops concerts, great Classics, new music, Kid’s Concerts, exploratory SoundBytes concerts, Matinees and Specials. There is truly something to suit everytaste. The benefits of purchasing before the Early Bird Deadline of May 29th include the bestpossible prices and the chance to win two tickets to any place in North America that AirCanada flies.

The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra continues to count on your support as ticket purchasersand donors to make it possible for the WSO to serve the community in so many ways. As yourenew your subscription, consider adding a donation to help the WSO with its important workin our community. This spring if you make a donation of $100 or more, you will receive aspecial thank you gift from the WSO in addition to your full charitable receipt.

Those of us who love our symphony orchestra want to ensure that this resource is available for our children and grandchildren to enjoy. We can do this by encouraging attendance atWSO concerts, by making annual donations, and by considering the Winnipeg SymphonyOrchestra in our estate planning. By making the WSO a beneficiary of the remainder of anRRSP, life insurance policy, or simply by adding them to your will as a charitable beneficiary, you are expressing your desire to see this art form flourish in our community for the benefit of future generations.

PROGRAM NOTESby James Manishen

Piano Concerto No. 5Ludwig van Beethovenb. Bonn / December 17, 1770d. Vienna / March 26, 1827Composed: 1809First performance: November 11, 1811(Leipzig) conducted by Johann PhilippSchulz with Friedrich Schneider as soloist.Last WSO performance: 2009; AlexanderMickelthwate, conductor; André Laplante, piano

Nothing came easy forBeethoven. In May 1809Napoleon invaded Viennawith enough firepower tosend Beethoven runningto his brother’s basement

for protection, covering his ears withpillows to shield him from all the noise.“The man will trample the rights of menunderfoot and become a greater tyrantthan any other,” he said. Austria’s financialsituation was gloomy. Beethoven had totake a reduced stipend from thenoblemen that supported him. But fromall the drums, cannons and misery, outcame the ‘Emperor’ Concerto, themajestic fifth of Beethoven’s five pianoconcertos.

The Leipzig premiere in 1811 was asuccess. The press called the work one ofthe most imaginative ever, and one of themost difficult! But the Vienna premieredidn’t go as well due to its presentation at“The Society of Noble Ladies for Charityfor Fostering the Good and Useful” benefitconcert where musical bon-bons were theusual bill of fare to raise money for theladies’ pet charities. Beethoven’s EmperorConcerto was placed alongside a ‘livingtableau’ of paintings by Raphael, Poussinand Troyes. Beethoven promptly left.

Beethoven didn’t attach the nameEmperor to the piece and likely wouldhave objected. There was a rumored storyof a French officer at the premiere sayingduring a particularly noble passage ‘C’estl’Empereur.’ But Anton Schindler,Beethoven’s longtime friend andbiographer, related that the Viennesepremiere took place on the birthday ofthe Emperor, which was the occasion forthe party by the Noble Ladies.

Yet the title really does capture the overallfeeling of this great work, especially thegrandly imposing presence of the pianowriting stated right from the beginningand resoundingly affirmed throughout thefirst movement. A lovely slow movementfollows leading into a vast rondo whosebounding theme gets a royal workoutbefore its imaginative coda, dying awaybefore one final romp to the finish.

Symphony No. 5Dmitri Shostakovichb. St Petersburg, Russia / September 25, 1906d. Moscow / August 9, 1975Composed: 1937First performance: November 21, 1937(Leningrad) conducted by Yevgeny Mravinsky.Last WSO performance: 2006; Alexander Mickelthwate, conductor

By the time he wastwenty, Shostakovich’sstar had entered ameteoric rise in theSoviet musicalfirmament. His First

Symphony was resoundingly acclaimed. He was even producing film music thatengaged Stalin, who viewed film as apowerful propaganda tool.

But by the 1930s Stalin’s grip on artisticfreedom bore down on Shostakovich indamning criticism of his so-called“formalism” – the individualized, intellectual response to his art thatofficials felt prominent in the opera TheNose, the ballets The Golden Age and TheBolt, culminating in the famous Pravdaarticle of January 28, 1936 entitled“Muddle Instead of Music” denouncingthe composer’s darkly powerful, thoughhighly successful opera of murder andadultery Lady Macbeth of the MtsenskDistrict. Criticized Shostakovich was, butalso encouraged to continue as long ashe could tow the Soviet line.

The press quoted Shostakovich aspurportedly calling the denunciation“just criticism.” The Fifth Symphony washis implied coming-out work to beconsistent with Soviet goals – “a practicalcreative reply” the journalist went on tosay. The Fifth was enthusiasticallyreceived. By 1940, Shostakovich wasdeemed to have joined the fold and wasawarded the Stalin Prize, the country’shighest musical honour.

Prior to the appearance ofTestimony in 1979, Shostakovich’sso-called memoirs, the prevailingview of the Fifth was a dark-to-light traversal in the style ofBeethoven’s Fifth and NinthSymphonies, along with anassociated renunciation ofShostakovich’s taintedideological past. Since then, research reveals the work asmore than an apology, with astrong vein of personalinclination flowing through thereported obligation. If he wasredeeming himself, why anabstract symphony bursting withirony and pungent lyricism whena patriotic cantata would do?

Shostakovich’s four-movementmodel recalls Beethoven, the only“traditional” composer survivingthe Soviet ban of the time. Theopening movement is alternatelyassertive and bleak within itssonata form. A folk-like secondtheme is altered from itsfamiliarity to Soviet audiences tosuggest more ominous meaning.Other themes exchange moodsof strong drama and sad lyricism, making their way back to theinitial material in open-endedclothes.

The second movement parodiesthe waltz, with heavy-bootedpeasants, stinging high clarinetand the suggestion of a dancemaster’s kit-violin, just as Mahlerhad done in his Fourth Symphony.

The third movement is a requiemthat made many openly weep atthe premiere. Subdued scoringfor mostly strings sets the mood, though twice does the music riseto cries of despair. Disembodiedcelesta closes this gripping Largo.

In Testimony Shostakovich gavecredibility to the hidden messagein the Fifth: the answer comes inthe work’s Finale, its forcedrejoicing seemingly createdunder threat. Not just anobligatory culmination “to life”but an affirmation of the tragicforces earlier invoked.

What is your favourite piece of music to play? I'd have to say the Bach cello suites - at the moment, especially the 6th Sarabande. His writing is so clear and heartfelt that sometimes I feel likethe music is just flowing right out of my own soul!

What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?Listen to music as much as you can. There is morethan a lifetime's supply of inspiring and excitingmusic out there.

Who is your favourite composer? I think I'll have togo with good old J.S. Bach on this one.

When attending a concert, what makes a greatperformance stand out? If you can tell that theperformers are truly enjoying and appreciating the music to its full potential, I'll most likely behaving a good time too.

Greg Hay Viola

What is your most memorable moment performingwith the WSO? My first time playing at the WestmanCentennial Auditorium in Brandon. I spent manyyears as a student going to hear the WSO play, and itwas a really special moment to have achieved mydream and be on that same stage.

What is your guilty pleasure? I started playing banjo anddobro in a bluegrass band last year called “Hay Fever.”It’s been really fun to learn to play some newinstruments, and to discover a whole new genre of music.

Where did you receive your musicaltraining/education? I was lucky to have grown up inBrandon where they have a strong music program atthe University. I continued my undergraduatestudies in Brandon and later moved to Montrealwhere I did my graduate degree at McGill.
