Bruce Godsave 1943-2017
Club Member Since 2010
SUNY Geneseo President Dr. Denise Battles sent out the following e-mail to the College
community on April 12 regarding his passing.
I am very saddened to report that Professor Emeritus Bruce Godsave ’65 passed away on
Monday, April 10, at Strong Memorial Hospitalin Rochester.
Bruce joined the faculty in 1976 as a teacher of deaf education and remained until his retire-
ment from the School of Education in 2002. Bruce served as Assistant Director of the School
of Education in the fall and spring semesters of 2000. He spent the 1985-86 academic year
as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago. He ac-
tively advised student organizations and wasan engaged member of the larger Geneseo
community. The combination of his love for students and his community engagement was
especially evident in his creation of “Meet the Community,” a freshman seminar designed to
introduce new students to the “people, places, and issues in Geneseo and the Genesee
Valley.” In 2000, he was the recipient of the William D. Haley Outstanding Service Award, the
Geneseo Volunteer Fire Department’s highest honor.
Bruce will especially be remembered for his efforts to restore the College’s carillon in the Sturges Hall Tower in the early 80s, which continues to fill our campus with dulcet melodies for all to enjoy. He was recognized for this work by the Alumni Association in 2005 when he was presented with a Distinguished Service Award. Bruce earned his B.A. and M.S.Ed. from Geneseo and his Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati. We send our sincere condolences to Carol Thomas Godsave ’66 and other members of Bruce’s family. I know that he’ll be missed by the entire Geneseo community. Calling hours for Bruce have been scheduled for Friday, May 12 from 4-7 p.m. at the Rector-Hicks Funeral Home, 111 Main St., in Geneseo. His funeral mass will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 13, at St. Mary’s Church, 4 Avon Road, in Geneseo. _______________________ Thanks to PP Sue Crilly for submitting this information.
