The provocative filmmaker Elio Petri maintains an uneasy balance between absurdity, genre thrills and terrifying realism in this unsettling, visceral, Oscar-winning thriller.. 5/29 THE WIZARD OF OZ (1939) Routinely referenced on countless lists as one of the greatest things ever put to celluloid, THE WIZARD OF OZ isn’t great because it was an achievement for its time--it’s great because it is a wholly inescapable whirlwind of excellence. It’s the movie kids beg to see over and over again and the film adults routinely need to revisit just to remind them just how magical a movie can be. 5/12 & 5/18 ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST (1975) A career-defining, legendary performance from Jack Nicholson anchors the film’s heavy emotional core and helps Forman and this character drama hits all the right notes from funny to devastating and everything in between. The film, though, would also not work without Louise Fletcher, whose evil Nurse Ratched makes an audience seethe with anger at the site of her face. 5/8 Video Vortex: HAWK JONES (1986) Clint Eastwood. Fred “The Hammer” Williamson. Charles Bronson. These are the names that have defined what it means to be a lethal, justice-seeking master of violence -- until now. HAWK JONES takes no prisoners. He follows no rules. He’s a martial arts expert. He’s an uzi expert. His adventures are punctuated by scorching guitar solos and triumphant drum machine fills. Plus, like every true hero, Hawk knows how to put “dames” in their place (“Females are like chocolate chip ice cream -- cold and lumpy!”). When crime kingpin Antonio unleashes a wave of terror over Minitropolois, it’s up to Hawk and his sassy-lady partner to clean up the streets. But do they have what it takes to defeat The Destroyer, Antonio’s bionic punk henchman? And will love get in the way of vengeance? As Hawk says, “This is my war. And the game is justice.” P.S. No one who appears in this movie is over the age of twelve. ONLY $1 ON GLORIOUS VHS 5/22 Cartoon Cereal Party: MARVEL-OUS EDITION Greetings true believers, face front! Here’s a whole kaboodle of news straight from your bullpen to you! Many keepers of the faith have asked us to “Make mine Marvel!” and we’ve heard you loud and clear! So we’re bringing an all-new Saturday morning, senses-staggering, sugary-sensation to a screen near you! 2 hours of your favorite Marvel super hero cartoons with unlimited sugary cereal, just 5 bucks! 5/24 BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA (1986) Big Trouble in Little China is the urban, subterranean, blue- collar version of Indiana Jones with half the smarts, twice the luck, and one million percent more charm. It’s witty, it’s clever, it’s start-to-end action-packed, but, most of all, it is probably the most fun any human can ever hope to achieve through cinema. 5/19 & 5/21 THE MATRIX (1999) Take the red pill and journey down the rabbit hole to 1999 when special effects were actually used FOR something and action movies were still awesome. See Neo go from everyday computer hacker to demi-god with the help of Morpheus and Trinity as he awakens to find his reality is nothing like it seems. 5/5 & 5/7 DELICATESSEN (1991) A post-apocalyptic, satirical black comedy from the twisted minds of Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amelie) about a former circus clown who finds an ideal living situation above a butcher shop...that is until he finds out how the butcher keeps the residents so well fed. Absurdist, extavagant with broad slap- stick and gross out images, early Jeunet can best be compared to a young Terry Gilliam with a double helping of feelings. Delicatessen can crack a smile, turn your stomach and warm your heart. 5/15 THE LOST BOYS QUOTE-ALONG (1987) We won’t make you eat maggots or trick you into drinking blood that will somehow turn you into half of a vampire, but we will let you say all of your favorite lines out loud along with the film, and our hosts will be starting the show off with a special game of “Are You a Vampire?” on stage. Expect plenty of garlic and holy water if you’re brave enough to volunteer for that challenge! 5/6 BEETLEJUICE QUOTE-ALONG (1988) BEETLEJUICE is vintage Tim Burton, and this film is filled with everything that made him such a beloved icon of the late ‘80s. Conga lines around the theater during the big songs, subtitles projected onto the screen so you can quote-along with all of your favorite lines, and all sorts of other props to use throughout the movie! Just follow the instructions in your Handbook for the Recently Deceased and everything will work out perfectly. 5/25 THE THREE AMIGOS QUOTE-ALONG (1986) Throw on your best mariachi outfit, prepare your singing voice for “My Little Buttercup” and practice your bird calls, because wherever there is injustice, you will find us. Wherever there is suffering, we’ll be there. Wherever you see tacos, eat them. And wherever liberty is threatened, you will find... ¡THE THREE AMIGOS! 5/27 New York Film Critic Series: CHEF (2014) Jon Favreau writes, directs and stars in a deeply personal story about a chef coming to terms with past failures and, in the process, finding joy in a new challenge. When Los Angles chef Carl Casper is fired after a war of words with a food blogger, he finds a new purpose in Miami via a Cuban food truck. Along with his son and long-term sous chef (played by John Le- guizamo), Casper embarks on a cross-country roadtrip - selling Cuban sandwiches and picking up new tricks as he visits cities including New Orleans, and Austin. With live Simulcast Q&A with Jon Favreau. 5/6 Girlie Night: ENCHANTED (2007) In salute to this hilariously satirical fairy tale, we’ve teamed up with the Action Pack to present an interactive quote-along edi- tion! All of your favorite lines will be subtitled, along with the lyrics to Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz’s wonderful songs, plus everyone in the audience will receive themed props like tiaras, bubbles and rubber cockroaches. That’s how you know that this screening will be even more magical than true love’s kiss. 5/20 THE LATE SHOW The Late Show is taking it to the max. Every Saturday night at 10:30p we are bringing you the very best of cult, horror and sci- fi. Each month we’ll provide a great pairing of midninght fare. The month of May is finding a heaping helping of testosterone and diesel fueled mayhem Some of the most bad ass 4 wheeled monsters are taking over the screen. MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE (1986) Emilio Estevez stars as one of the last few humans standing when a passing comet causes every machine on Earth to go on a kill-crazy can spitting rampage. Mack trucks, airplanes, and microwaves become instruments of wholesale manslaughter. One poor slob even gets iced by a Coca-Cola machine. 5/31 DEATH PROOF (2007) Released in 2007 as part of GRINDHOUSE, a double feature extravaganza concocted by Tarantino and director Robert Rodriguez, DEATH PROOF is a throwback to films from a more dangerous era. In the vein of 70s carsploitation films like DIRTY MARY, CRAZY LARRY and VANISHING POINT - a stuntwoman looking for a little adventure in her downtime must contend with a deadly daredevil with a car designed to kill. 5/24 Big Screen Classic: BEN-HUR (1959) Winner of eleven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor (Charlton Heston), BEN-HUR is an epic film in every sense of the word. Experience this rare studio re-release and classic cinematic masterpiece in its full splendor with this glorious 8K digital restoration. 5/10 & 5/11 Spaghetti Western Wednesdays: ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST (1968) Epic story of a mysterious stranger with a harmonica who joins forces with a notorious desperado to protect a beautiful widow from a ruthless assassin working for the railroad. Plus, we’ve got spaghetti. 5/14 Spaghetti Western Wednesdays: A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS (1968) The first film of the “Dollars Trilogy” and unofficial remake of Akira Kurosawa’s YOJIMBO. Follow Eastwood’s “the man with no name” as plays both families of a small town to make money out of their bickering. Oh yeah, and there’s spaghetti. 5/28 MAD MAX (1979) George Miller’s fantastic dystopian Auz-ploitation flick that became the jumping off point for Mel Gibson and opened the door for Australian New Wave Cinema. A film whose trilogy grows deeper and deeper in substance and myth with every film feeling like a brand new re-imagining of the desolate oil barren world. 5/3 MAD MAX 2: THE ROAD WARRIOR (2003) The titular Mel Gibson finds himself as the lone wolf of the wasteland, defending the last outpost of untarnished humanity. What follows is in-arguably the single greatest chase/fight/ stunt explosion ever captured on film, with more car-flipping and stuntman-smashing than any 1000 American action block- busters could dream of. Come witness the absolute ultimate in fallen world annihilation with THE ROAD WARRIOR! 5/10 MAD MAX: BEYOND THUNDERDOME (2003) The final product is decidedly different from MAD MAX and THE ROAD WARRIOR. The tone is lighter and a great performance by Tina Turner swings for the fences and (almost) overshadows Mel himself. Although it’s a bit of a departure that doesn’t mean it still isn’t pretty damn awesome. I mean it has a giant arena, Thunderdome, where “Two men enter. One man leaves.” 5/17 BIG BADS The baddest of the bad have never been better BIG BADS The baddest of the bad have never been better ONLY AT THE ALAMO ONLY AT THE ALAMO ONLY AT THE ALAMO ACTION PACK INTERACTIVE SCREENINGS AND CINEMATIC EVENTS THE LATE SHOW BRINGING THE BEST OF THE BEST AND THE BEST OF THE REST THE LATE SHOW BRINGING THE BEST OF THE BEST AND THE BEST OF THE REST
