Wow, another great attendance for our monthly luncheon and the networking style of the event created quite a buzz. The Chamber had the honor of our having new City of Fenton mayor, Mike Polizzi, in attendance. We are looking forward to continued growth and positive synergy with the City as we work as a cohesive group towards creating the best business community Fenton has to offer. I would like to thank our past mayor, Dennis Hancock, for all of his efforts in forming the relationship that the Fenton Chamber and the City of Fenton have today… he will be missed! Last year, the Fenton Chamber of Commerce worked closely with police, fire and city officials to help our members focus on disaster preparedness. In light of recent violent acts such as the Boston bombings and disasters such as the fertilizer plant explosion in Texas, I thought this would be a good time to bring this topic to the forefront of everyone‘s mind again. Have you made your plan of action if something should happen to disrupt your business? If there is violence in your workplace, what is your survival strategy? If there is a flood or fire in your building, how would you exit the building and ensure the quickest way to get back to business? The Fenton Chamber of Commerce has created a Business Assistance Database which has been shared with the Fenton Fire Protection District as well as the St. Louis County Police Department. This database is comprised of Fenton Chamber members and the resources that each can offer during time of need. The hope with this is that the database will become an integral part of each company‘s plan of action during an emergency. This database will be updated again next year, however in the meantime, please remember to contact the Chamber Office if your business needs assistance from fire, flood or any type of emergency. The database consists of available temporary office and warehouse space, volunteers, food/water, equipment and much more. It‘s finally here! After all of the preparation and much anticipation, the Business & Community Fair has finally arrived. Now is the time to make sure your ―Elevator speech‖ is fine-tuned. If you need to, refer back to the Fred Miller program we had at our membership luncheon in March. To make the event as effective as possible for your business, have your booth planned out and any give outs ready to go when you arrive to set up at the Fair. There a many events constantly happening and Fenton Chamber of Commerce definitely offers the tools for your business to succeed. Please keep your eyes out for all of the emails and updates sent out by the Chamber office staff. Thank you to all of our members for your support and remember, SHOP CHAMBER FIRST!! Sincerely, Greg Bresler President – Fenton Area Chamber of Commerce General Manager – Andre‘s Banquets and Catering

Bill Heimburger, owner of Graphics Factory, five-year Fenton Chamber member, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, May 1st. It was noted in his obituary that his greatest achievement was the starting and growing of a successful sign and graphics business. Bill was committed to serving his community and

found it next to impossible to go out without running into someone he knew. One of his favorite pastimes was boating with family and friends. Bill's broad smile and big heart filled every room he was in. He was an anchor to his family; he was a loyal friend to many and will be missed by all.

The full obituary for Bill Heimburger can be viewed at www.stltoday.com under the ‗News‘ section.

Our condolences are with his wife, Debbie, family, friends and staff at Graphics Factory.

Dear Friends and Neighbors, Within the County Council‘s Third District, the following beautiful parks offer a variety of activities and amenities. Buder Ebsworth Laumeier Love Museum of Transportation Ohlendorf West Queeny Park Simpson Unger George Winter On April 2, 2013, Proposition P won approval in both St. Louis County and the City of St. Louis. This 3/16ths of a cent sales tax increase is expected to generate approx. $31 million a year to fund improvements to the Gateway Arch grounds, the region's Great Rivers Greenway trails, and for county and city parks. County voters passed the measure with 53 percent of the vote. Tom Ott, interim director of the county's Parks and Recreation Department, offers the following thoughts on our park system: The St. Louis County park system will be 63 years old this year. The Parks and Recreation Department was created when the County Charter was adopted in 1950. Today, the St. Louis County park system consists of 70 park sites, comprising 12,700 acres. One of the best aspects of our Parks Department is the diversity of recreational facilities and activities we offer to the residents of St. Louis County. We have 140 miles of trails, 77 picnic shelters, 134 picnic sites, 99 athletic fields, and much more. We also have some unique items like the Alpine Tower and Team Challenge Course at Greensfelder Park, a Radio Control Airplane field at Buder Park, Disc Golf Courses at four park locations and animals at Suson and Lone Elk. We offer over 400 programs each year with an emphasis on outdoor programming. I had the privilege of attending Leadership Day at Stanton Elementary last month. Over 300 educators from across the Midwest came in to view how Stanton effectively incorporates Leadership Habits into the curriculum.

During the presentation we had the opportunity to hear from Haley Bosek, the 4th grader who was inspired to make a difference in the lives of children in other countries. Haley was exposed to the fact that, in Africa, the children suffer from terrible diseases and have high mortality rates due to not having clean water.

She was inspired to make a difference and proposed a Leadership Project to the school counselor, Cathy Westbury. Haley then found local business owner, George the Shoeman, and learned about his Water Project. Cathy helped Haley put together a team and set a goal of collecting 5,000 pairs of shoes which would provide a water purification system that can clean 10,000 gallons of water per day and water purification training for two people.

January came and they were 1,100 pairs of shoes short of their goal. In the spirit of the 7 Habits, we asked the community to come together to help reach the goal. Stanton ended up with 5,184 pairs of shoes! Haley was so excited to tell the room full of 350 adults about the project. When I spoke with Haley, I asked her to tell me how she was able to reach her goal. She was quick to point out that it took a team of people and she would not have been able to reach the goal on her own (Habit 6, Synergize, at its finest!). Haley said she used all 7 Habits in the project, especially Habit 1: Be Proactive and Habit 5: Seek First to Understand.

Thank you to all of the Fenton Chamber members who donated to Stanton’s efforts!

Did You Know? Shoe donations can be dropped by the Chamber Office for Shoeman Water Projects!
