1 FAT FENDER FLASH THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER FOR FORD F-100 ELITE OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA May 2013 ============================================================================== EAST BAY BANTER By: Ken Rogers Hi From East Bay Hope the Easter Run had a good turnout on March 30 th . We always make it up to Chico on Easter weekend for a family get together, so we had to miss the run. I think because of the threat of bad weather, none of the F-100’s from East Bay Chapter made it either. On April 20 th , we had members of our chapter truck on over to the Menlo-Atherton High School Car & Truck Show. This show benefits the school’s baseball team. We had good weather, and there was a good turnout. Something that’s just a little different…the members of the baseball team come around to the spot where each of the participants are and take their orders for the BBQ. They then deliver the meals to everyone. Congratulations to Paul Thorn, who won the award for “Outstanding Truck”. We are looking forward, at this time, to Silicon Valley Chapter’s cruise on May 4 th . It should be a good one. We’re also planning to attend the Niles Show on May 11 th , as well as Classic Cruisers show on May 18 th . This is going to be a busy month! Don’t forget the North-South Run in August. If you have never attended this run, plan to this year. This is a good F-100 run, which is presented by our club and Pickups Limited of Southern California. A lot of planning goes into this event to make it one you won’t forget. See you there. Modesto Happenings

By: Bob Hansen

Modesto F-100’s are continuing the planning of our 20th Annual Back to Graffiti. T-Shirts are committed, goodie bags are in the works and checks have started coming in from registration and trophy sponsors. The Hog Corral (motorcycle entries) has started to gain a little momentum. We have 2 firm trophy sponsors from local shops and have received good reception from the local cycle community. The Modesto Chapter came out for the annual Easter Run at Micke Grove on March 30th, the day before Easter. Many of us met for breakfast at Denny’s and then caravanned to meet the rest of our group. Attending from Modesto were Eric Van Vliet, Austin and Jim Van Vliet, John and Linda Walsh, Bob and Susan Hansen, new member Tom Freitas and family, Jeff Davis and Susie, Michael and Leanne Robinson, Wayne King, Paul King, and Chris Souza and fiancé Minda. As always, lots of fun stuff to do, lots of activities for kids, super raffle, and a nice show and shine with some great unique trophies. Beautiful day to sit around and enjoy the show with friends – and the EASTER BUNNY!! Watch out for those teeth! Modesto also found some time to stuff car show flyers for mailing. Thanks and great job!

Who’s Working on What John Walsh has spent some time lately STRIPPING. His truck, that is. It’s down at the paint shop getting beautified at the time of this printing. Can’t wait to see it! Word is it should be done and at the Matthew Preston show on the 28th. Come to the show to be one of the first to see John’s new paint job!

Our mini lizzie F-100 went back in the shop for some more motor work and is now reported running better than ever. The new lizzie should make the rounds starting with the April 28th Matthew Preston show. The mechanics say its “really fast” --- come on out and see for yourself.

The following is the article that was submitted for last month’s “Modesto Happenings”, but

arrived too late to make it into that issue. Modesto F-100’s are continuing the planning of our 20th annual Back to Graffiti. T-Shirts are committed, goodie bags are in the works and checks have started coming in from registration and trophy sponsors. We are also busy working on the benefit for Matthew Preston, which will be held on April 28th at the Fruit Yard. There will be a huge raffle, 50/50 drawing, and vendors. We hope everyone can show up to support this benefit show for Matthew.

Who’s Working on What Some of you may remember a pool of fluid underneath the pesky Mustang at the Pumpkin Run last October. Thanks to Wayne King’s quart of transmission fluid, the poor old girl limped home. Forgotten in the garage for only 5 months and with Easter Run looming close, it was time to find and fix the problem. After laying in transmission fluid for 2 days (under a shade tree), I replaced three 47 year old power steering hoses. I should have replaced all 4 when the first one went out 4 years ago. Doing-it-yourself with a good helper is way over-rated!

April is now officially over and the taxman has been paid. We are hoping that everyone had a great Easter. The Easter Run itself was well worth it for anyone who was willing to go out in a little rain. But WHAT RAIN! The day turned out to be just perfect a few clouds, not too hot and great company. It would have been great if more vehicles had turned out but the people who did come made the most of it. As in years past the kids were able to hunt for eggs with the Easter Bunny even though this year we had to get a substitute for the job. Their usual bunny guy had to work so we pulled a guy out of the crowd (just like they do in those magic acts) ha- ha. The piñatas seemed to go on forever till someone finally got it in the right spot and bam the piñata was cracked. The trophies this year were really unique and were given out to the chosen few. And as the day came to the close the weather had cooperated and we never saw a drop of moisture. April also starts the Friday car shows in the area. And as like last year we are trying our darndest to hit them on a regular basis. This also means no cook Friday’s as my son’s girlfriend’s family calls them. So great food and great company makes the weekend start out with FUN.

On the way home from E-board we stopped by 23rd Annual NSRA Northern California Appreciation Day by Fred Childers Car show at the Dell’osso Farms in Lathrop (see picture). We are also checking out all the swap meets in the area either by selling or buying. Art has been on the receiving end of both of these. He has some new items for his renegade truck. He cannot wait to show it to everyone. You will love it. I have not seen it personally but he is being true to the name of his truck. The Cruisin to the Grove is moving right along. We are tweaking a few things from last year and adding a lot of new and different things to the lineup. We will have more vendors and lots of things to keep everyone busy as they are waiting for the judging to finish and the raffle to end.

Take care everyone and be careful out on the road. We hope to see everyone soon.

So, thinking she would substitute another green vegetable what was just as nutritious she served her son asparagus. When her son looked at the plate, he gasped in fright, “Oh no, spinach with legs!”

So, where were you on Saturday, May 4th? If it was somewhere besides being with the approximately 70 other gearheads on the Silicon Valley Cruise, you really missed out on a great time. For the 6th consecutive year the Silicon Valley Chapter has put together an event that is a little different than the usual car show. To begin with, it’s a driving event rather than a static show where everyone gets their lawn chairs out and hangs out in one place for the better part of a day. While it can be said that driving events are becoming more prevalent, they’re usually based on simply driving from point ‘A’ to point ‘B’, and/or touring some automotive related stops such as fabrication shops, car collections, etc. This cruise tries to mix things up a little bit, an example being a winery or brewery. There are the shops and collections, of course, but we’re always looking for other stops of interest. Another example of how we’re different is the trophies that are awarded to the participants. They’re homemade by our chapter president, Mike West, and the recipients are selected by the hosts of each stop as well as several of the cruise sponsors. The winners are not chosen for “Best Of….”, or on a “points” basis. The individual making the selection gets to decide based solely on “whichever vehicle they like the most”. One of the really popular differences with this event is the free meal that is provided to all participants at the last stop of the day. The first few years, the members of the Silicon Valley Chapter prepared some fantastic BBQ meals, usually tri-tip roasts, chicken, and a good selection of side dishes. The problem with that approach is that it meant some of the members couldn’t fully participate in the cruise itself because they had to put the meal together for everyone else. That led to having the meal catered, which was well received. For the 2012 Silicon Valley Cruise it was decided to try something a little different, and had a Mexican food buffet served to everyone. That was a big hit, so, continuing with the theme of serving “foreign cuisine”, this year the cruise’s last stop was at a local Italian restaurant where everyone enjoyed a huge meal served family style. I think it’s safe to say no one left there hungry.

The cruise started in the morning at Goodies Speed Shop in San Jose. Participants started at the registration table where they received goody bags that actually had some goodies in them, rather than a large stack of vendor brochures and advertisements. They were then sent to the T-shirt table to get their pre-ordered event T-shirt. From there, they were served doughnuts and fresh brewed Starbucks coffee. Everyone then had the opportunity to tour Goodies shop to view some of the rods, customs, and muscle cars being worked on there. Raffle tickets went on sale, and participants had the opportunity to select the first card for the poker hand that they would hopefully fill as a winner of some money at the end of the cruise. Before leaving Goodies, there

was a drawing to select a winner of a free session on their dyno. This was sponsored by Goodies Speed Shop, and the winner had 90 days to ‘cash-in’ on the prize. Goodies owner, Richard French, selected Brian Geer’s flawless 56 Chevy Bel Air as his favorite vehicle. Leaving there, everyone caravanned to the Hot Rod Service Company, in Campbell. This shop likes to refer to themselves as one of the best kept secrets in Campbell. It’s surprising how many people had no idea it was there, yet they’ve been there for several years, and have turned out some beautiful, show winning cars and trucks. Since their beginning in a 1500 square foot space, they’ve expanded their operations to the point where they occupy 3 separate buildings in their complex. The vehicles they’re building or working on there are a sight to behold, and reflect the latest and greatest in technology and design in the hot rod world. Jeff Twitchell, HRSC’s owner selected Skip Baker’s cool, customized F-1 pickup as his favorite vehicle.

7

Leaving HRSC, the group traveled to the Los Gatos Hills to spend some time touring and relaxing at the beautiful Black Ridge Vineyards property. This winery opens to the public only one half of a day on the 3rd Saturday of each month, but graciously opened especially for a private time of wine tasting, viewing the breathtaking surroundings, and kicking back for all the participants of the Silicon Valley Cruise. Jennifer Flippen, Director of Operations, selected Don & Lorna Yegge’s Model T sedan as her favorite vehicle.

The next stop on the cruise was only about 250 feet away from Black Ridge Vineyard’s tasting room, where

participants got to spend some time in the ‘over the top’ garage of Jim Landes, one of the owners of the winery. While this may not be a large collection of vehicles, the quality is pretty much

unsurpassable. The Landes family’s gracious hospitality was fantastic, and his private car collection “is to die for”. Jim Landes chose the 54 F-100 of East Bay Chapter’s Robert Martinez as his choice. From the grounds of the winery, to cruising through downtown Los Gatos Village, it was a scenic cruise to Frankie, Johnnie, and Luigi’s Too Italian Restaurant for a family style Italian meal of salad, pizza, rigatoni, rolls, BBQ chicken, and soft drinks. While there, the poker hands were completed, collected, and tallied to determine the best hand of the day, as well as the worst hand. Dick & Anne Cullins, from San Jose had the best hand (two pairs), while Silicon Valley Chapter’s own Mike Guerriero had the worst hand. The winners won $50 & $25, respectively. The 50/50 raffle was also

drawn, with the lucky winner (sorry, I didn’t get the name of the winner) getting a nice chunk of change to take home. The favorite vehicle of the FJ&L staff was Greg Leonard’s big block powered 66 Chevelle. Another different approach this year was the raffle. Rather than having the usual huge raffle, with a ton of small, sometimes not so great prizes, and a few “real keepers”, This time, there was about twenty really great prizes (over $1000 worth from Harbor Freight Tools), such as tool chests, floor jacks, service carts, tools, an air compressor, and more (see examples below) and at each of the 5 stops a few tickets were drawn and the prizes awarded there.

8

At around 3:00 PM folks started drifting on home, and from the comments heard by this writer, everyone seemed to have had a great time, got to meet new friends, felt they had gotten more than their money’s worth, and they went home happy and satisfied. If you were there, thank you so very much for joining us. If you weren’t, we’re sorry you couldn’t make it, but we hope you’ll be able to join us next year. Either way, mark you calendars to reserve Saturday, May 3, 2014 for the 7th Annual Silicon Valley Cruise. We’ve already begun to work on planning it, and we hope we’ll see you there.

SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!! Got this e-mail this morning and thought I should share it with you…..

“This is Ramsay from the Classic Chevy Club, I was part of the group that attended your run this past Saturday. I have to tell you that was one of the best runs I have been to in a long (no make that a Long, Long time) time. We were all blown away at by the whole day's events, tons of raffle prizes, great stops, the Winery was amazing, all the stuff in the goodie bag, the T-shirt and the great lunch at Frankie, Johnny, and Luigi's. "WOW". I don't how you do this for just $35.00. That's about the best deal in town, all your members were great and it was a pleasure talking to them, very friendly and welcoming. My wife and I had a really good time. My only suggestion for the run is to please keep on having them, I'm looking forward to next year’s run already. Thank's so much to you and all of the club members who worked so hard to make this a great cruise. See you next year”

FIGHT SPEEDING TICKETS WITH THE NEWLY RELEASED IPHONE APP,

‘TICKETDEFENDER’!

TicketDefender tracks and reports vehicle’s speeds to protect drivers from undeserved speeding tickets. TicketDefender is a newly released iPhone App that enables drivers to protect themselves from undeserved speeding tickets by providing a printed report that shows their vehicle’s GPS speed and location prior to the issuance of a ticket. Police radar makes mistakes, lots of them. In America more than 100,000 people per day receive speeding tickets. Some experts estimate that 10-20% of all radar-backed speeding tickets are issued in error and in the case of radar operated from a moving police vehicle the number of inaccurate tickets may be as high as 30%! Yet, the use of Radar is widely accepted and we naturally assume the technology is reliable1. But good news is just an Apple App away. After a truck driver received one these erroneous speeding tickets, he decided that something had to be done. He presented his idea to a friend who is an engineer, and TicketDefender was born. As a user drives their vehicle TicketDefender automatically records the speed, time of day, and GPS location. If the driver is pulled over for speeding, he simply clicks “Press When Ticketed” to capture the last hour of data and generate the free Speed Report and free Map Report. Instructions for how to print these non-editable, encrypted and watermarked Speed and Map Reports are sent to the driver’s email address. These two reports can be

28

used in court as evidence against wrongfully issued tickets to protect drivers from “the officer’s word against mine” situations. The TicketDefender Speed and Map Reports include the vehicle’s make and model, license number, time and date, the vehicle’s speed recorded every 3-5 seconds and a map showing the vehicle’s location and corresponding speed. If the speed on the TicketDefender report is different from the speed indicated on the ticket, the driver has a valid "not guilty" argument. This report can then be presented in court or with employers in defense of inaccurate speeding tickets. Radar can often clock incorrect vehicle speeds causing an unwarranted ticket, but until the release of TicketDefender there has been no way for drivers to prove that they were driving at a speed that was different from the speed stated on the ticket. TicketDefender can be a valuable tool, both for fighting speeding tickets and for proof of speed at the time of a car accident.

TicketDefender is certainly a benefit for any driver or commuter and particularly beneficial for individuals whose livelihood depends on a positive driving record such as truckers, bus and taxi drivers. TicketDefender will track any vehicle in which the phone is located, once the vehicle’s data has been entered. One TicketDefender download can be used for multiple vehicles including company and family member’s vehicles TicketDefender will also multitask; it continues to track speed and locations while you use the phone and other applications. The one time download of TicketDefender can be used repeatedly to give a lifetime of protection from undeserved or inaccurate speeding tickets.

TicketDefender for the iPhone is available at the iTunes store for an introductory price of $1.99. To learn moreabout this exciting new App visit www.TicketDefender.net.
