Where will you be next month in the biggest national celebration of the country?

The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee will be celebrated in thousands of homes across the country and around the world. A Diamond Jubilee is a rare occasion and it has only ever happened once before in Great Britain back in 1897 with Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. Now in the Diamond Jubilee Year of Queen Elizabeth II, we will look at the remarkable life of The Queen, the past jubilee celebrations of The Queen and the many activities you can do and take part in for the greatest national celebration in our lifetimes.

The Queen’s Early YearsThe Queen was born Princess Elizabeth of York at 2.40am on 21 April 1926 at 17 Bruton Street, Mayfair, London. She was the first child of The Duke and Duchess of York, who were later crowned King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. At the time of her birth, Princess Elizabeth stood third in line of succession to the throne after Edward, Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII), and her father, The Duke of York. But it was not expected that her father would become King, or that she would become Queen.

Princess Elizabeth’s early years were spent at 145 Piccadilly and the London house taken by her parents shortly after her birth, and afterwards at White Lodge in Richmond Park. In 1930, Princess Margaret was born and the family of four soon moved to the Royal Lodge in Windsor Great Park as their own country home.

In 1936, Princess Elizabeth’s grandfather, King George V died and his eldest son came to the throne as King Edward VIII but, before the end of the year, King Edward VIII had decided to give up the throne in order to marry the woman he loved, Mrs Wallis Simpson. Upon his abdication, King Edward VIII’s younger brother, The Duke of York acceded

to the throne as King George VI. As the next in line to the throne, Princess Elizabeth was now first in line to the throne, and a figure of even more intense public interest.

On 20 November 1947, Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh was married in Westminster Abbey.

On 6 February 1952, following the death of King George VI, Princess Elizabeth acceded to the throne at the age of 25 to become Queen Elizabeth II.

the Queen’s Silver JubileeOn 6 February 1977, The Queen’s Silver Jubilee marked the 25th anniversary of her accession to the throne and the theme of the Jubilee was the ‘unity of the nation’. The Queen spent the day at Windsor with her family and the anniversary was commemorated in church services throughout the month. As part of the celebrations, The Queen embarked on an overseas tour to visit 36 Commonwealth countries and after which, was followed by a tour of the UK. It was estimated The Queen, accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh, travelled 56,000 miles during the year.

The national celebrations reached a height on 6 June, where The Queen lit a bonfire beacon at Windsor which started a chain of beacons across the country and on 7 June, vast crowds saw The Queen travel in the Gold State Coach to St Paul’s Cathedral for a Service of Thanksgiving. The final event of the celebrations was a river progress down the Thames. This was followed by a firework display and a procession of lighted carriages which took The Queen back to Buckingham Palace where Her Majesty and the Royal Family appeared on the balcony appearances to a cheering crowd. Street parties and village parties started up all over the country and in London alone 4,000 were reported to have been held.

the Queen’s Golden JubileeIn 2002, The Queen’s Golden Jubilee marked the 50th anniversary of her accession to the throne and celebrations took place around the country in the first week of June. In one of The Queen’s speeches during this period, she said ‘Gratitude, respect and pride, these words sum up how I feel about the people of this country and the Commonwealth — and what this Golden Jubilee means to me’.

From February through to August, Th e Queen and Th e Duke of Edinburgh travelled over 40,000 miles throughout the UK and the world and met with people of all ages, religions and nationalities. However, it was also a very sad time for Th e Queen, who lost both her mother and her sister within seven weeks. Th e Queen (aged 76) became the oldest monarch to celebrate a Golden Jubilee and a special dinner was hosted for all reigning European Sovereigns. Th e Queen also attended a dinner with her fi ve surviving UK prime ministers and gave a dinner for Governors-General of the Commonwealth countries of which she is Queen.

A chain of 2,006 beacons was lit across the world on 3 June, including the length and breadth of the UK, the Channel Islands, the Commonwealth, and the world. Th e Jubilee parade on 4 June involved 20,000 performers and a million people gathered in Th e Mall to watch the festivities. Th e Gold State Coach was used twice during the Golden Jubilee, making its fi rst appearance since the Silver Jubilee in 1977.

the Queen’s Diamond JublieeTh e Central Weekend to celebrate Th e Queen’s Diamond Jubilee takes place from Saturday 2 June to Tuesday 5 June 2012, with celebratory activities throughout the UK and across the Commonwealth.

Th e Jubilee Weekend features an extra Bank Holiday for the Diamond Jubilee, with the late May Bank Holiday moved one week later, thereby making a 4-day long weekend.

Th e couple, who had known each other for many years, were married in Westminster Abbey on 20 November 1947. Th e event was fairly simple, as Britain was still recovering from the war, and Princess Elizabeth had to collect clothing coupons for her dress, like any other young bride. What is Pilates? A complete mind and body work out for men and women, Pilates is a method of exercise that helps to elongate, strengthen and restore muscle balance around the joints.

How does this muscle imbalance occur? The reasons are many and varied but typically muscle imbalance arises from poor postural holding patterns that develop throughout our lives. The causes are complex, and can often be traced back to adolescence when we become much more self aware and sometimes embarrassed by our bodies. Shoulders start to slump and the upper back rounds forward in a bid to try and make ourselves appear smaller. The problem is then compounded as we take on more sedentary lifestyles, spending increasing amounts of time in front of a computer and the steering wheel of a car. Over time poor posture can lead to lower back, shoulder and neck pain.

How does Pilates work? Unlike many forms of Western exercise, which tend to target the superficial, outer muscle layers (the ‘pretty’ ones such as biceps, six pack etc), Pilates targets the deeper muscle layers that lie close to the joints. Over-use of the superficial muscles can result in the deep stabilising muscles becoming weakened and inhibited

leaving the joints vulnerable to injury. These deep muscles are also known to ‘switch off ’ in the presence of injury.

Through Pilates you will learn to reconnect with those core muscles around the joints, re-establishing the neuro-muscular connections so that the joint is stabilised before and during movement. In this way you are protecting your body from injury and developing a superior level of strength and endurance.

The benefits of Pilates Pilates is excellent for general fitness, specific health conditions and overall well-being and is suitable for all ages. Benefits include:-

Expert Says

Practicing yoga while pregnant is lovely for both you and the baby. Yoga teaches you how to work with your changing body as the bump grows, it prepares you well for the birth both physically and emotionally, and the classes are an energising and relaxing activity (both important during pregnancy). You will also meet other Mums-to-be in class which is a great way of making long term friends who have the same-age children. You can come to our pregnancy classes from Week 13. We have 2 antenatal classes per week for all Mums-to-be.

Q I am in my early pregnancy, am I suitable to practice yoga and what are the benefits for my body?

Some Stretching Questions

For you

Diana Penny, Yogawest

Q Do children really enjoy yoga? Is yoga too passive for them to get them interested? What is the best age for them to start learning?

Children LOVE yoga! We teach children from age 7 upwards at Yogawest: one class for 7-12s, one for 10-16s. Children age 14 and up are also welcome to come to classes with an adult, and we can advise you which classes are most suitable. Our class for 7-12s is a fast-paced, action-packed 45 minutes of fun yoga activities designed to inspire children and work with their growing bodies. Children come back term aft er term to this: they really look forward to it at the end of a school day. Teenagers however need a diff erently paced class: we teach them how to use yoga to re-balance, re-energise and de-stress as an antidote to all the commitments and concerns that secondary school children have.

Q There are a lot of types of yoga classes in the market today, what is the right class for me to start with as a first time beginner?

Complete beginners might consider doing a 6-week foundation course to learn the basics (these run regularly throughout the year) or they might prefer to try a few beginner or general classes fi rst to see if they like them before committing to a course. At Yogawest we teach Iyengar Yoga, which is known for it’s attention to detail, anatomical precision and safe working practices. Iyengar yoga was one the fi rst types of yoga to be taught in the UK back in the fi ft ies, and is still considered to be one of the best and safest methods around – a good place to start!

Spring lamb is all about tenderness, so a good sauce will add the finishing touch. Here is a great way to get that flavour fix.

Get your butcher to keep the bones from the lamb for you to roast in the pan, as they contain marrow and will give a boost to the stock at the end.

5. Remove the bones pour off the meat juices and separate the fat, deglaze the pan with a little wine and reduce, fine sieve the stock, meat juices and wine stock into a saucepan and reduce by half, add the chilled butter pieces and shake gently to absorb. Check for seasoning.

6. Wilt the spring greens in a frying pan with a little water and butter.
