Hello Rebel Rider Magazine Readers, you are now reading the Third Anniversary Issue of Rebel Rider Magazine. We are so thankful for all our advertisers, Rebel Rider Magazine Reps, and readers. We can’t do this issue without mentioning the tragedy that took place during the Boston Marathon. I know our readers feel the same way we do when we say our hearts go out to the families that lost loved ones or had some-one injured during the event. We can’t say enough for those law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line everyday. Be-cause of 9/11 and now the tragedy in Boston our nation has certainly changed again for-ever. These young men had a whole lot of hate in them. What a shameful incident this was, there is simply no excuse good enough. Don’t forget Mothers Day May 12. Abraham Lincoln said...All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother. It has also been said “Men are what their mothers made them”, for sure our mothers hold a very special place in our hearts forever. May 18-19 is the Second Proud To Be An American Bikefest. You don’t want to miss out on a show put on by a band called The Other Side, a Doors Tribute band. They also do songs from War and others. Proceeds from the event are going to local Veteran Organiza-tions. Location is Renningers in Mt. Dora, your going to love the location they are giving us on the hill this year. May 18th is the 6th An-nual Freedom Ride to Bushnell National Cemetery, please see page 9. Hark * Push

BEIKIRCH, GARY B. Rank: Sergeant Organization: U.S. Army Company: Company B Division: 5th Special Forces Group, 1st Special Forces Born: 29 August 1947, Rochester, N.Y. Departed: No Entered Service At: Buffalo, N.Y. G.O. Number: Date of Issue: 10/15/1973 Accredited To: Buffalo, NY Place / Date: Kontum Province, Republic of Vietnam, 1 April 1970 Citation Medal Of Honor For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Sgt. Beikirch, medical aidman, Detachment B-24, Company B, distinguished himself during the defense of Camp Dak Seang. The allied defenders suffered a number of casualties as a result of an intense, devastating attack launched by the enemy from well-concealed positions surrounding the camp. Sgt. Beikirch, with complete dis-regard for his personal safety, moved unhesitatingly through the withering enemy fire to his fallen comrades, applied first aid to their wounds and assisted them to the medical aid station. When informed that a seriously injured American officer was lying in an exposed position, Sgt. Beikirch ran immediately through the hail of fire. Although he was wounded seriously by fragments from an exploding enemy mortar shell, Sgt. Beikirch carried the officer to a medical aid station. Ignoring his own serious injuries, Sgt. Beikirch left the relative safety of the medical bunker to search for and evacuate other men who had been injured. He was again wounded as he dragged a critically injured Vietnamese soldier to the medical bunker while simultaneously ap-plying mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to sustain his life. Sgt. Beikirch again refused treatment and continued his search for other casualties until he collapsed. Only then did he permit himself to be treated. Sgt. Beikirch's complete devotion to the welfare of his comrades, at the risk of his life are in keeping with the highest tradi-tions of the military service and reflect great credit on him, his unit, and the U.S. Army.

Greetings from Kyrgyzstan!

Things are looking up around here and the Af-

ghanistan/Central Asia theatre as temperatures are

rising. Colors are changing from that white cold

stuff called snow, to a more pleasant dirt brown

hue. But a change of scenery is always good. An-

other reason why things are lookin up for me is

that I'm half way home. By the time this issue

comes out, I'll only have a few months left. Being

here for the first six months of 2013 is giving me a

clearer year so far. So far, it has consisted of sleep-

ing, working, eating "food", working some more,

and working out. Pretty simple life. Looking for-

ward on "complicating" things with simple pleas-

ures like being with my family, riding my motorcy-

cle, having "clothing optional" days around the

house. The sky's the limit and the world is my oys-

ter.

Being here at one of the main transit areas for op-

erations in Central Asia has its rewards. So far I've

bumped into a few of my friends on their way to

Afghanistan. Some I haven't seen in a few years!

Most recently, I met up with Jinx, a fellow Green

Knight brother I used to ride with in South Geor-

gia. He Facebooked me and said he was "in the

area". So I met up with him, shot the stuff, had

many laughs, and talked about ridin together when

we both head home from our tours. (Look for

something written on that this summer.) He'll be

spending his time downrange crankin wrenches on

A10 Warthogs. Such an awesome aircraft and the

Taliban is absolutely terrified of 'em! Good luck to

you over there, brother. See ya soon.

I'd like to take the chance to highlight a few folks

takin care of business here and in the area.

As for you folks at home, enjoy Leesburg Bikefest!

Have fun and take care of each other.

I flat got into an argument the other day with a prospective client that just couldn’t see what I was trying to say. So, I would like to pose the question to you. How much more is 4% than 2%? Now think about it a minute and I’ll tell you the answer…or, in this case, “the answers.” The prospective client told me he was only “making” 2%...but that was “better than the possibility of losing any money.” I asked him that if some one were to show him an invest-ment that may make 4%, would he be interested. He said, “No... that’s only 2% more.” “Oh...Hello!” 4% is 100% percent more than 2%. If you have 2 apples and I have 4 apples, I have 100% more apples than you…not 2% more. So is 100% the real answer to the riddle? No... not really. We have about a 2%+ historical rate of inflation. So if you are earning 2%, your net, inflation adjusted, CPI rate of return is ZERO. The guy earning 4% has a net inflation adjusted rate of 2%. So is that the end of the puzzle? No!... not really? You see Uncle Sam wants his share and he does-n’t really care what the inflation rate is. So, if you are at the 25% marginal tax rate, Uncle Sam wants 25% or ½ of one percent of your 2% rate of return. This nets you about a ½% lost after inflation and taxes. The guy earning 4% gives up 1% to taxes at a marginal tax rate of 25% and 2% to inflation. This gives him a 1% net gain, or a 300% better return than the 2% account. The “real risk!”, therefore, is in not mak-ing a return greater than the rate of infla-tion and the cost of taxes over time. William H. Citrus County/ Nature Coast Biker Bash For weeks while I waited, I knew that the Nature Coast Biker Bash in Crystal River would be a spectacular event! And spectacular it was! April 12-14th was a weekend filled with music from great bands, lots of vendors, bike shows, give-aways and lots of good food and cold beer at both Harley Davidson of Crystal River and High Octane Saloon, with Bobby Friss taking the stage at High Octane Saloon on Friday night. I missed that show, but knew they were playing Saturday at Harley Davidson.

By the time I managed to get to Crystal River Saturday, the parking lots at both Harley David-son and High Octane were packed, pretty much as I expected. It was a bike lovers heaven: lots of chrome and that adrenaline inducing roar of the pipes! Jersey Dirt had the stage at High Oc-tane Saloon at 1pm, and of course they sounded great. My friend and I worked our way through the crowd, got cold drinks, chatted here and there and I still managed to get some great pics. Then we headed on over to Harley Davidson across the road. Once again, bikes all over the place. After getting cold drinks, we moved on to the outdoor stage area. This time we got to lis-ten to Bobby Friss playing to a packed crowd. In the meantime, a separate group was preparing for a wedding that would take place once Bobby Friss got done playing. Once the Jimmy Sparks Band took the stage the wedding was on. What a perfect weekend and location for a biker wed-ding: Harley Davidson of Crystal River! After such a good day Saturday, I had to go back for more! First on to Harley Davidson for more good music, and of course to check out

their bikes for sale and the great apparel inside. Another good weekend for Warren and his crew! Who wouldn't be happy being surrounded by all those Harley's? After some time spent there, I headed over to High Octane. Starting off the music at noon, George Marshall played to a happy audience, followed by Big Engine. I joined my friends at a table and boy was I lucky they were there saving me a seat. The place was to-tally filled with a great crowd. As usual, Big En-gine gave a great show and on break they posed for pics with folks and autographed tshirts, then jumped back on stage with their trademark energy! I did manage to stuff myself with some awesome pot roast, then got a few pics from the bike show. What a spectacular turn out at Harley Davidson and High Octane for the Biker Bash!!! Can't wait for the next one! Make sure you stop by and check out the show-room at Harley Davidson of Crystal River and then hit up High Octane for a cold beer. Tell em YGIRL sent ya. And while your in the area, stop on by Castaways Bar and Grill heading North on US 19. Make sure to check out the Tiki Bar out back. Castaways is Biker Friendly. Check out their ad. And since you're in the mood for some wind, head a little further north into Inglis and stop by Shrimp Landing for some great food. When you're done there step next door to Hick-ory Island Lighthouse Lounge for ice cold beer. Tell em YGIRL says "hey". You can find their ad in Rebel Rider too. Get on out there in the wind! See ya at the next stop, YGIRL More Pictures 19,20,22,28,27

Bike Night at the Tilted Kilt I know that most, if not all, of you have been to different bike nights around the area but this one is by far the best I’ve ever been to. Nefty, one of the managers there has got this thing to-gether. The parking lot is set up for bikes only parking, vendors, bike games, live music, plenty of food and brew, AND all those beautiful TK girls. Mark your calendars, the 1st Saturday of each month 4-11 pm HAPPY, HAPPY, HAPPY Hour, it’s like a mini bike week in one night. Be sure to say hello to Nefty, he’ll be the guy run-ning the bike games. You can find their address in this magazine. Great job Nefty and the TK crew, we’ll see at the next bike night, May 4th. More Pictures page 24. Rebel Rider Duke

Eighth Annual Cop’s And Kid’s Day

April 20th was the Lake County Sheriff’s Office 8th Annual Cop’s and Kid’s Day. Lake County Sheriff Gary S. Boarders and his department put on one whale of a show for hundreds of families that showed up for the event from all over Cen-tral Florida. The event provides motorcycle com-petition between several different police and sheriffs departments as well as games for kids to play. This years event was as Hugh success. Unlike the previous year the rain stayed away keeping the pavement dry for the tremendous Motorcycle Skills Competition. There is no doubt in my mind after watching the officers compete that I per-sonally have no desire to try and copy them. There was plenty of food available on site, all proceeds from everything went to benefit a local charity organization. The event was 100% Free to the public however...I would have paid to watch the kids having such a great time. The Rest Is Pictures. Hark

Apopka Music & Bike Fest 2013 Last year the Apopka Music and Bikefest was a two day event, I recall how hard the rain hit rid-ers while they were doing the Poker Run on day one. This year founder of the event Wayne put everything he had into a one day event on March 30th which turned out to be a very smart move! The rain stayed away. The location of the event could not be better, the Old Zellwood Sweet Corn Fest on Ponkan Road is where the party begins and ends. This event provides everything a biker is looking for starting with a poker run, bike show, tattoo contest, prizes, great food and around 40 vendors. Orlando Harley-Davidson came on board this year which should tell us the event is going to grow even more next year. Due to recent back surgery I was unable to attend the event, Rebel Rider Rep G road all the way up from South Lake to take pictures and enjoy the day. Next year I shall be back on two wheels and hanging out with our loyal readers...I simply can’t wait...Hark…All Pictures Taken By G

GO PINK! 2013 The forecast called for rain, but that didn’t seem to matter to several hundred people who showed up ready to ride at the Ribbon Riders’ annual Go Pink event on Sunday, April 14th. This is the main fund raising event for the Ribbon Riders which began a few years ago as the “Bingo for Boobs” ride and has now grown by leaps and bounds into the fully Police es-corted “Go Pink” ride. Found just five years ago, the Ribbon Riders started with just seven original members and that number has climbed to well over forty. In that time they have raised tens of thousands of dollars to help local people battling breast cancer. This is a local group helping local people with real day to day needs. They helped one person the very first year and to date they have now helped over two hundred women and even two men. The ride started at Eagle Riders in south Orlando, near the Florida Mall, and you could tell when you pulled into the parking lot that everyone was ready to have a good time. Lots of people were dressed in pink for the occasion, a DJ was playing tunes out front, and the crowd was up and dancing in the parking lot. One of Orange County’s Finest even got off of his bike to dance with the group. After signing in and a quick “breakfast” it was time to roll.

Some escorted rides can get a little tedious at times, but I can tell you that I really enjoyed this ride. We headed west from Eagle Riders past Sea World, around Disney World, and on through west Orange County before crossing through Windermere and back to south Orlando. We all ended up safe and sound at the Orlando F.O.P. Lodge on south Orange Avenue. The Orange County Sheriffs’ Department really did a great job escorting the ride, keeping traffic out, and moving everyone along at a pretty decent speed. The F.O.P. lodge was ready for everyone when we got there. There were tables full of raffle and auction items everywhere. There was a full bar inside and vendors and lunch available outside. They had a stage set up for Diablo Canyon to rock the crowd and games and even tricycle races in the parking lot to keep the fun going. This was a great place to end the ride, but the building was just about at capacity with the great turn out for the day’s event. Once again the Ribbon Riders put on a great ride, and a lot of money was raised for a great cause. What more could you ask for? Even the rain held out until long after everyone had headed home. Let me tell you about a Day Trip Ride! Hey there all of my biker friends! I haven’t had an article in Rebel Rider for the last few issues, because frankly, there are only so many insurance related items that I can think of to write about. Not to men-tion, and I am sure I don’t really need to tell you this, insurance is a pretty boring subject! Unless of course you are an insurance geek like me…. Recently, Jodie and I planned a day trip with some friends (Dreams the Band) to ride the “loop” in Day-tona. If you haven’t ever been on that ride, we HIGHLY recommend it! Just gorgeous scenery from the beach scene to the canopied curvy roads, it was an awesome day. What should you do in preparation for a day trip like this? First of all, before going on any ride (but especially if you are going to be a distance from home), you should really go through the Motorcycle Safety Foun-dation’s T-CLOCS checklist Everybody remember what that is?? T-Tires----Check your tires for the proper pressure and for wear. C-Controls-Are you cables (clutch and brakes) intact and working? L-Lights-Do all of your lights work properly? (headlights, turnsignals, brake/tail lights) O-Oil and Fluids-Check them all C-Chasis-Check the frame, suspension, chain/belt, and fasteners S-Stands-Make sure the kickstand/centerstand are in good working order and that the springs keep those “Kick Stands Up”

For a more detailed downloadable inspection checklist check out the Motorcycle Safety Foundations website at www.msf-usa.org

Sometimes, even though we inspect our bike thor-oughly before heading out something breaks! And on our trip to the Loop, one of our group broke a chain!......So it’s a Sunday mid-morning, we are 40 miles from home and we are stranded alongside the road with a 1984 sportster chain laid out on the side-walk, (and no, it isn’t the master link, the chain snapped and twisted inside the motorcase).. So we call the closest Harley dealer, “I am sorry, but we don’t have one in stock”…What now?? And then, out of nowhere swoops TARZAN!!!---Frank Yarbour-ough, aka TARZAN pulls up in his SUV and asks if we need any tools….Nah, we have a decent tool set among us, but we need a chain.

In typical biker bro fashion, he pulls out his phone and calls his buddy, Brian “Murf” Murphy with Quality Mo-torcycle Repair in New Smyrna Beach, Fl 386-212-5589…”Sorry, I don’t have a full chain, but I might be able to fix it”… So, Frank-Tarzan, offers to run the chain to his friends shop, takes it to the shop and comes back with a re-paired chain!!! Frank has now spent the better part of his morning (and early afternoon) helping out our lit-tle biker group, whom he has never met before!!! Tarzan in typical hero fashion, refuses to take a dime from us for his time. That’s what bikers do! Tarzan, you are our hero! What could have turned out to be a bummer of a day, turned out to be an 11 (on a scale of 1 to 10). Although activity-based therapies often are beneficial for children and young adults with neuromuscular disabilities, these therapies are frequently unavailable to many individuals. Luke’s Way-Recovery in Mo-tion aims to provide these beneficial therapies to children and young adults living in our commu-nity and surrounding areas. One type of activity-based therapy that is par-ticularly effective for many individuals with neu-romuscular disabilities is Locomotor Training. Locomotor Training works by “turning on” or ex-citing critical pathways in the nervous system and by strengthening (through much activation and practice) muscles within a framework of nor-

mal movement patterns for standing and walk-ing. One aspect of this approach is the use of partial body-weight support and a treadmill to create an environment where walking and stand-ing can be safely and intensely practiced. Skilled trainers assist and provide specific sen-sory input to help achieve recovery of standing and stepping with an emphasis on normal move-ment patterns versus compensation. Currently there are no facilities in our area offer-ing this promising intervention to children and young adults with neuromuscular disabilities. We know first-hand the positive impact activity-based locomotor training has had on the life of Luke Adams. Luke is a local boy with severe chronic spinal cord damage due to transverse myelitis at 5 months of age. By 3 years of age, Luke remained unable to walk. Luke had the amazing opportunity to participate in a locomo-tor training research program. Through this in-tense program, Luke achieved the ability to walk independently with a walker. Luke’s trunk and sitting balance also have improved extensively and he has not required braces to achieve these functional improvements. Our hope is to offer activity-based therapies, such as locomotor training, under the supervision of physical and occupational therapists, on an outpatient basis to children and young adults with neuromuscular disabilities who may benefit from these interven-tions. Locomotor training is just one of many types of activity-based therapies. These therapies may be provided by physical and occupational thera-pists, as well as other health care practitioners. Luke’s Way-Recovery in Motion aims to provide activity based therapies that are based on scien-tific evidence and shown to be effective in re-storing movement and function. We therefore aim to collaborate with scientists to continue to determine the beneficial effects of activity-based therapies. We believe that building partnerships and scientific collaborations will be critical to the ongoing advancement of therapeutic interven-tions for children and young adults with neuro-muscular disabilities.

RIDING S.O.B. (Covering Central Florida and All Roads to the

East Coast) OK, I’m going to keep this short and sweet – it’s spring time in Florida, low 80’s with nothing but sun-shine, and as I write this the Leesburg Bikefest is about to begin. I’ve got better things to do than sit here behind this computer….. Speaking of spring time, along with all the plants popping up, it must be poker run season too. Lots of poker runs every weekend – hard to decide on which ones to do. But, as always, the biker community will come out to support a wor-thy cause. One question though – when did $20 be-come the going rate for a poker run? It took a while to go from $5 up to $10, but now its 20 bucks every time you turn around. I’m all for going out for a ride to support those in need, but when you make it ALL about the money, it probably turns some people away….. Anybody heading up to Milwaukee in late Au-gust for Harley’s 110th anniversary party? Over 60 bands including Aerosmith, Toby Keith, Kid Rock, Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Doobie Brothers. They only do this every 5 years and they really do go all out for a good time. Probably the friendliest rally you’ll ever go to with everyone in town telling all the Harley rid-ers “welcome home”. I rode up there for the 100th and the 105th, and I don’t plan on missing this one!….. It’s already time for the second annual Proud to be an

American Bikefest. May 18 & 19 at Renninger’s out-side of Mt. Dora. Come on out and camp for the week-end and have a great time!..... Like I said at the be-ginning of this column, the weather is great and Lees-burg is ready to start – I gotta’ go. If you see me there, I’ll be walking down the street with a beer in my hand (it ain’t Daytona you know). Until next month, as always, I’ll be out there riding the back roads of Central Florida! -Brad [email protected] Riding SOB on Facebook 407-432-5845

Fallen Few M/C Anniversary Party Rain did not stop the Fallen Few Lake County MC from having their first Anniversary Party at the Iron Horse Ranch. Wow what a party hot spot! Fallen Few was able to have overnight camping, a monster of a burn pit, plus the barn. It looks like an old horse barn that has been around for several decades, the barn is complete with a stage and all kinds of places to get off your feet. Ice could beer came right out of the horse trough. The band Red Line played some great classic music...they really fit in to the days at-mosphere. Chicken and Pulled Pork was cooking away for those who had a deep hunger going on. There were some of the Fallen Few that had to work in the rain...this did not seem to bother them a bit, they found the closest tree and cre-ated what is called A DRY RAIN! Old Biker Joke From Way Back. I can’t believe how fast the Fallen Few have grown in Lake County, it looked to me like there were between 30 to 40 members. When you see a group grow in numbers as fast as this group is growing it sends a message to you “They have to be doing something right.” I am really

looking forward to next years party. For those of you who have not heard...I had back surgery on L 4 and 5 the end of March. I have been so lucky to have so many friends. Many contacted Push and asked if they could help her get the April issue on the streets...all I can say is thank you to all of you for the love you show. Nothing in the world beats our biker family. The rest is pic-tures on this page and page 51. Hark
