CAR companies turn over billions of pounds every year and bank millions in profi ts – but which cars are the

most profi table? It’s a question we’ve been pondering for

some time. All car manufacturers can fl og a car, but what makes the difference between a bumper profi t margin and a tiny one?

Well, we asked a host of industry experts, professors and insiders to help us come up with this list.

They told us cutting costs and maximising returns in the automotive world is all about sharing expertise and platforms – do that and car manufacturers can dramatically increase their profi ts. Here are some of the cars that our experts believe are real cash cows for their makers.BMW 3-SeriesIt’s the salesman’s mile-muncher, but its premium price and relatively cheap production costs mark the 3-Series out as a winner for the marque. Our experts said it was mostly down to excellent cost control, the fact cars are often highly specifi ed and usually sold for a premium over similar-sized cars like the Ford Mondeo.McLaren MP4-12COne of the shock cars to emerge from our research was the new McLaren. Although development costs are high, the actual car is relatively inexpensive to make in relation to the high retail price. Our experts said the carbon chassis could be the cheapest to produce ever while many physical components have been replaced by more cost-effective electronics. If they sell the numbers forecast at between £160-170k it could be one of the most profi table cars ever!Range Rover SportThe Range Rover Sport benefi ts from all factors that make a model profi table: It’s based on an existing chassis (Defender) which keeps build costs low. It’s sold for a

premium with lots of added extras. And it’s been kept on sale for a long period of time without a major redesign. All these add up to a holy grail in terms of profi tability.VW Golf Described by our experts as ‘the daddy’ of platform sharing, VW isn’t one of the most profi table makers without good reason! The Golf is responsible for two million units a year and currently provides underpinnings for a huge array of Seat, Audi, Skoda and other VW models. Many are sold for a premium but cost no more to make, adding a healthy balance to VW’s bottom line every year.Aston Martin CygnetOk, we know this hasn’t arrived yet, but the baby Aston has the potential to be a real profi t centre for the maker. Essentially rebadging a Toyota iQ and charging £30k-plus for it – and that’s before buyers have shelled out on extras – could spell happy times for the marque. However, despite its potential, our experts warned this would only be possible if buyers like it…Ford TransitIt’s not just cars that add substantially to a manufacturer’s bottom lines – vans do too! The Ford Transit is sold in markets around the world and our experts believe it is one of the most profi table vehicles on sale in Europe. Low production costs and decent volumes help keep the cash fl owing for the Blue Oval.

Arthritis Care is a charity for all people with all forms of arthritis – currently estimated at 10 million in the UK. They have a help line that offers practical, confi dential support, and run a range of self-management and personal development programmes, giving people the confi dence and skills to manage their arthritis and dramatically improve their quality of life. They also have several information booklets on subjects appropriate for people with arthritis and work closely with health professionals and other arthritis organisations. There are branches and support groups across the UK who offer information and help plus the opportunity to meet other families and carers who are dealing with arthritis on a daily basis.

There is a very proactive branch in the Amesbury district that meet on the 2nd Wednesday of each month in the Bulford Village Hall. They have regular speakers, musical entertainment and talks by health professionals. There are also two outings each year and a New Year dinner at a hotel. There will be a branch holiday to Folkestone in September and their small trips group go to various interesting places once a month.

This spring the charity are offering their supporters right across the country the chance to Amble for Arthritis as part of Arthritis Care Week (9th to 15th May). Building on the success of last year’s ambles, they want to get many more people involved.

To raise awareness that there are 10 million people with arthritis in the UK, they are looking for participants to cover 10 million steps between them. This means 500 people walking 10 miles each or 1,000 people walking fi ve miles.

The Amesbury Branch are organising a short amble around Bulford Village, near Salisbury Plain so why not get involved. The walk will start at 2pm on Saturday 14th May and refreshments will be served in the village hall afterwards. These Ambles will be open to everyone – members of Arthritis Care and their family and friends, branch members, young people, in fact anyone who would like to support the charity and the work they do for people with arthritis.

They are also encouraging people to organise their own ambles. It doesn’t matter where, when or how long the walk is. It could be in the local park, around a lake, through your city centre or even on the beach. What does matter is that participants have a good time, and achieve something both for Arthritis Care and themselves. A sponsored walk is the perfect way for people with arthritis to enjoy the countryside and help ease the pain of arthritis. Exercise can be the last thing you want to do when in pain but in actual fact it is one of the best ways of keeping pain at bay. The other benefi ts of exercise include a better range of movement and joint mobility, increased muscle strength, less stiffness and increased energy.

They are not expecting people to walk the Three Peaks or Lands End to John O’Groats (although it would be wonderful if they did), but a two, three or fi ve mile gentle stroll that can be enjoyed by those of all ages and limitations would be great.

Anyone is welcome to attend the Amesbury branch meetings and if you would like more information including the Amesbury Amble, please ring Chris on 01980 624993, (there is an answerphone in case Chris is out, so please do leave a message and she will get back to you.)

The Food Files: Tomatoes

With 60,000,000 tons of tomatoes being produced each year,

the tomato is the world’s favourite fruit. Thought to originate from South America, it was during their colonisation of the Americas that the Spanish introduced the tomato to parts of Asia and Europe. In the 1550s, the fruit was described by the French as ‘the apple of love’ - which differs entirely from the Latin name for the common tomato, which translates as ‘wolf peach’.

Fact: Ever fallen victim to the unsavoury odour of skunk? Next time, keep a carton of tomato juice to hand, as it has been known to neutralize the animal’s spray.

Legend has it...Elizabethans didn’t eat tomatoes as they believed that their red colour meant the fruit was poisonous. This may not be quite as silly as it sounds, given that the tomato is in fact a relative of Atropa Belladonna, better known as ‘Deadly Nightshade’.

Why you should eat it: Tomatoes are considered to be a ‘superfood’ due to their high levels of the antioxidant lycopene. Other medicinal benefi ts include controlling blood pressure and protecting against UV rays.

Why you shouldn’t: As with green potatoes, tomatoes that are more ‘pea’ than ‘strawberry’ in colour can contain a toxin which is particularly nasty if eaten raw.

What do we do with it?When buying tomatoes, try not to take them from a supermarket refrigerator - cold really kills the fl avour. If possible, it’s best to grow tomatoes yourself, as the ones we see in shops are often picked when green

and unnaturally ripened with gases before they end up on the shelf. However, if you can get your hands on some fresh ones, there’s nothing better than a ripe tomato salad drizzled with balsamic vinegar and topped with torn basil and chunks of mozzarella.

HUNTER’S CHICKEN6 large chicken breasts1 large onionOlive oil2 cloves of garlic, diced1 tin of chopped tomatoes1 tin of peeled plum tomatoes1 tbsp tomato purée100g mascarpone cheese125g mushrooms, sliced12 olives, halved and stonedA large handful of fresh basil, washed and tornSalt and pepper

1. Heat the oven to 190 degrees C (fan oven) or gas mark 5.

2. Fry the onion and garlic in 2 tbsp oil over a low heat for a minute or two, but don’t let them brown.

3. Tip the tins of tomatoes into the pan and stir in the tomato purée and a dash of salt and pepper.

4. Simmer on a low heat for around 10 minutes until the sauce has thickened, then add the olives and mushrooms and simmer for a further 5 minutes.

5. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the mascarpone and basil leaves.

6. In another pan, heat a little oil and fry the chicken for a few minutes until it begins to brown on both sides, then place the breasts side by side in a baking dish.

7. Pour over the sauce and pop the dish into the middle shelf of the oven for around 30 minutes.

Serve with green beans and crusty bread. Or cook some sliced potatoes dotted with butter and topped with cheese and serve with broccoli or any other green vegetable.

Wilton Riding for the Disabled (RDA) was established unoffi cially over 50 years ago at Grovely stables in

Wilton. Due to the generosity of the Earl of Pembroke, a permanent home was found for the school with Pat Burgess as the very energetic instructor and many years later it has become one of the largest RDA groups in the Country. In an average week the riding school is attended by 200 riders with a variety of disabilities, both physical and mental, but each rider has their individual character, ability and needs. Riders are kept safe by our team of volunteers, over 100 each week: some riders need a team of 6 or 7 people to assist in the mount and from then on 3 or 4 during their ride whilst others may require just one helper.

With the endless enthusiasm of the team, riding gradually builds confi dence and self esteem and works wonders on the riders’ balance, co-ordination and fi tness. The major expenses, the care of 17 resident horses, all of different shapes and sizes to suit our riders, and maintenance of the purpose built riding centre are met entirely by fundraising efforts and donations. Each year the Centre needs to raise £65,000 to enable the valuable work to continue. Without the support of local people and businesses the Centre would have to reassess how the facility is provided, meaning some riders would no longer be able to benefi t from this unique type of therapy and the sense of freedom which many of us take for granted each day. With such high running costs, events play a major part in our fundraising efforts. Events are run throughout the year but the Summer months provide the ideal opportunity, we hope, to enjoy the weather and the great outdoors whilst raising money for a worthwhile cause.

RIDDLE TIME!I have a face, but no mouth. I have hands, but no fingers. What am I?

The British Heart Foundation celebrates its 50th birthday this year, so to commemorate the charity’s milestone,

we’ve put together some tips to help you keep your heart healthy.

1) Keep an eye on your blood pressure When was the last time you had yours checked? Hypertension (high blood pressure) is one of the UK’s biggest killers, contributing to the risk of heart disease and strokes. The Stroke Association estimates that a quarter of people have undetected high blood pressure – don’t be one of them, get yours checked now.

2) Eat chocolateAlthough it would be lovely to tuck into a box of Milk Tray for medicinal purposes, it’s the dark stuff you should be including in your diet. Full of monounsaturated fat, fi bre, antioxidants and magnesium, a few blocks a day can help regulate blood pressure too.

3) Watch your waistHolding weight around your midriff means you are more likely to develop heart disease and diabetes, as fat stored here can have a big impact upon your arteries. If you think your tummy could do with some down-sizing, up your exercise and cut down on treats and goodies – it’ll be worth it!

4) Keep activeJust half an hour of moderate exercise each day will go a long way to keep your heart, body and mind healthy.

5) Diet swapsGo easy on the salt, cream, butter and cheese – instead, try to include oily fi sh, avocados and olives in your diet, which contain the really good fats that do wonders for your blood cholesterol levels.

6) Stay at workObviously, stress should be avoided due to the negative impact it has upon all aspects of health. That said, a study on health problems in relation to retirement age shows that those who keep working up until they are 65 tend to be in much better shape than those who pack it all in early.

7) Clean your teethResearch has proved a connection between maintaining good oral hygiene and the prevention of a heart attack. Taking lifestyle factors into account, studies show that people who don’t look after their teeth are at a much higher risk of developing heart disease than those who brush theirs twice a day.

Help to keep your heart healthy by...

The message is LOUD and clear!

MAY in the gardenIt’s great to be joining you on a regular basis, especially when the subject is gardening! I’ll be giving you some hints and tips for what to be doing in your own gardens, letting you know what I’m up to in mine, and in the process hopefully inspiring you to get out in to the garden more, enjoy everything it has to offer, and achieve some pretty impressive results yourself.

Welcome to May, one of the fastest moving months in the gardening year. May is the month when plants just keep on and on growing and developing. New transplants, recently allowed to enjoy the ‘great outdoors’ after an early start in a greenhouse, wait a week or two and then POW! they’re off, and showing you their potential. Old established garden friends, their roots well down in the soil, put on new leaves, stem growth, fl ower buds maybe even fl owers and enjoy the fact that whilst the weather has warmed up, they’ve not yet been hit by growth-restricting drier conditions of summer. It’s a month when it is hard not to feel a regular desire to grab a trowel (or perhaps a fork, spade or cultivator) and get out there and enjoy yourself while at the same time giving the garden and its plants the TLC that’s deserved. What better way to spend an hour or two….or perhaps even a day or two?

With the massive surge in interest in growing your own vegetables, vegetable plants and seeds are available just about everywhere, so there are no excuses for not giving it a go. Even if time is short or space at a premium, it really is worth growing a few crops – the feeling of self-satisfaction when you make that fi rst harvest is just SO good....not to mention the taste of the crops themselves. At this time of year you can sow seeds of many vegetables direct into the soil or large pots of multi-purpose compost. Try your hand at

climbing French beans, dwarf French beans, runner beans, carrots, salad leaves, spinach or peas. I also adore home grown sweetcorn; this too can be sown direct now, but make sure you sow the seed in a square e.g. four rows of four seeds, formed in to a square (it is a wind pollinated crop and this is the way to get good, well-fi lled cobs). It is a bit late to raise your own courgettes, squash, tomatoes or peppers from seed, but there should be plenty of young plants available in local nurseries or garden centres – just make sure you buy a variety of tomato or pepper suitable for growing outdoors if you don’t have a greenhouse (the label should make this clear).

It is worth spending a few minutes to check fl ower beds and borders, however small or large, as at this time of year they are a hive of activity. I just have masses of twiggy pea-sticks (well branched prunings will do) and have driven them in around the edges of several herbaceous perennials. So many of these lovely plants are inclined to fl op disastrously later in the year, but supported subtly now, they’ll remain upright. As I do this I always spot a few other things that need seeing to as well. All the lovely lush growth means that (in my garden at least) slugs and snails are having a fantastic time devastating the tender new leaves. When I put new plants in the ground I scatter oyster shell around the soil beneath the plants. It is readily available from local suppliers of chicken feed, and is by far the best barrier to slugs and snails that I know....and bought in this way, it does not cost a fortune either. Early aphid (greenfl y

NEW WRITER

and blackfl y) infestations are also likely to be building up now, and dealt with promptly they are unlikely to cause too much damage – a gentle but fi rm squash between fi nger and thumb works a treat, or for those less partial to direct action like this, spray with a fatty-acid or soap-based spray late in the day when bees are no longer about.

With most of the gardening year ahead feeding makes sense too. So whether you have a well-stocked compost heap, or prefer to use fertilisers from the garden centre, apply them now so that your fl owers, fruits and veg have a chance to make best use of them.

Up until early June you can also order ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ – garden ready veg plants plus weekly advice emails from Pippa.

Golden RulesMake sure that seedlings and young plants get enough natural light.Gradually harden off young plants before planting them out.In warmer areas, start to plant out more tender crops, but protect with cloches at fi rst.Tomatoes in containers need regular feeding with a liquid tomato food.Treat yourself to some summer bedding for a really lively terrace-container, but check the forecast carefully before planting them out.

Parliament spent some time in recess last month, so, as well as squeezing in a few days off with my family in the run-up to Easter, I also had the opportunity to spend more time meeting constituents and attending local events in and around Salisbury.

However, that was not before my latest trip with the Defence Select Committee. Having visited serving soldiers in Afghanistan, this time we were touring defence institutions and meeting key offi cials in the US.

The visit – a hectic fi ve days - involved a call at Central Command in Tampa, Florida where, would you believe, I bumped into two of my constituents in the briefi ng with US General Mattis!

We heard about the way the US organises the military with alliance countries in their HQ for the “Central” region of the globe.

We moved on to Norfolk, Virginia where the Committee was shown around the USS George H.W. Bush aircraft carrier.

It was an opportunity for us to examine the views of US Navy on the UK’s recent review of defence spending. The overwhelming feedback was reasonably positive but this perhaps refl ects the fact that the UK has been the most consistent ally of the US rather than a great enthusiasm for the cuts that all major countries face in defence spending at the current time.

From there, we drove to Washington where we met various US congressmen and senators and received a briefi ng on the current position of operations in Afghanistan and Libya.

As ever with these visits it is about listening carefully to what we are not told and, like an elaborate jigsaw, trying to work out what the full picture looks like.

We have much to ponder as we work on several reports over the coming months.

Racing dogs to benefit

from carnival dog show

Those entering this year’s Amesbury carnival pet dog show will have fun, while helping dogs who once graced the podium

in a very different context. GRWE (Greyhound Rescue West of England) will be organising the canine corner of Holders Road playing fi eld on 4th June and will receive much of the one pound entry fee towards rehabilitating unwanted ex-racing dogs. The show is intended to be a fun family event, providing owners with the opportunity to parade their beloved pets for all to see. Anyone may enter with any dog regardless of origin. Rosettes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each of the ten categories with a prize for 1st place. The winner of each category will then go through to the fi nal judging to determine the carnival K9 who will receive a trophy they can keep.GRWE is a volunteer-run charity dedicated to rescuing dogs no longer wanted by the

greyhound racing industry, last year rehoming over 900 dogs. Press offi cer Stuart Parslow said “Our hounds are very grateful to be benefi tting from all the fun at this year’s carnival”. He urged anyone looking to home a dog, to consider one of the thousands of racers who leave the track each year. “They really are wonderful family pets” he continued “but after a racing career the most likely category they will win is ‘best sofa-warmer’!”Entry for the dog show is on-the-day, so just turn up with your four (or maybe three) legged friend as soon as possible after gates open at 12 noon. Please keep all dogs on leads and remember to clean up after them. Owners are responsible for the conduct of their dogs and please take special care around children and other pets. For more information about how the retired racers will benefi t from the proceeds of the fun dog show visit www.grwe.com.
