FoREwoRD & InTRoDUCTIon

FOREWORDby Phillip Long, Senior Curator, national Galleries of Scotland

I am very pleased to have been asked to write in introduction to the Dumfries & Galloway Arts Festival. The national Galleries of Scotland together with The Tate and the Art Fund are delighted to be playing a part in this for the first time, working with Gracefield Arts Centre to bring to Dumfries the first exhibition in Scotland dedicated to the outstanding art of Vija Celmins. we are very grateful to the artist, who has given new work, and to Anthony d’offay, whose extraordinary donation of the Artist Rooms collection to the nation has made this possible.

Celmins is one among several celebrated individual contributors that promise to make the Festival especially memorable, stimulating and enormously enjoyable. Equally striking are the Festival’s broader international ambitions, bringing to audiences new dance, art, film and music from as far afield as Peru, Syria, Lebanon and India, to be seen alongside work from our own country. Companies such as the Scottish Chamber orchestra will delight, but neither does the Festival shy away from vital and darker matter, such as benson and Eidinow’s profound dramatisation of the Lockerbie atrocity. weaving its way through the programme are events designed especially for children. These sound so interesting and such fun that adults will want to join in!

It is wonderful to see Dumfries and Galloway’s long tradition of nurturing and promoting creative talent thriving through its Festival. on the organisers’ behalf, it is a pleasure to thank all those whose contribution and hard work have made it possible. Please give it your support through your enjoyment of all it has to offer.

Welcome to the 32nd Dumfries and Galloway Arts Festivalby Dame barbara kelly, Chairman

once again the Festival team has been busy assembling ten days of exciting and diverse events celebrating the arts in Dumfries and Galloway. This year’s programme promises to be as rich and varied as ever with something to suit everyone. we hope that you will take the opportunity to participate and make the most of what is on offer. The last week in May is truly a feast of the Arts for you, your family and friends.

You will note the strong Visual Arts programming and the Festival is particularly proud to be associated with Dumfries and Galloway Council in bringing the prestigious Artist Rooms exhibition to Gracefield Arts Centre, Dumfries. with Anthony d’offay’s remarkable gift to the nation, the national Galleries of Scotland are making it possible for the public to have access to some of the most important contemporary artists in the world.

I pay tribute to the band of dedicated volunteers and staff who make the Festival possible. we are grateful to our very many sponsors who include Dumfries and Galloway Council, Creative Scotland, the Dumfries and Galloway LEADER project and Event Scotland. our heartfelt thanks to a wide range of local businesses, trusts and individuals who, despite hard times, continue to back us. without them this Festival simply would not happen.

So.... I look forward to seeing you enjoying yourselves at the many venues scattered across this wonderful corner of Scotland!

LizLochheadisoneofScotland’sbest-knownpoets and dramatists, with her books and poetry attracting wide critical and commercial success. She has recently been appointed as Scotland’s new Makar, taking over from the late Edwin Morgan, as Scotland’s foremost living poet, essentially Scotland’s ‘Poet Laureate’. She is also a tireless performer and screenwriter, performing all over the Uk and overseas.

born in Motherwell, Lanarkshire, in 1947, she taught art in schools before becoming a full time writer. She has won numerous awards and bursaries, beginning with a Scottish Arts Council award for Memo for Spring in 1972, and more recently with Medea, which won the Saltire Society Scottish book of the Year Award.

Lochhead manages to bridge the gap between the literary and the popular with her lively, witty takes on modern life and relationships, particularly her poems on the lot of modern women. The language she employs is rich in the spoken Scots of Glasgow, and filled with a warmth and humanity that never fails to truly connect with her audience.

This is a rare chance to see, probably for the last time, a singer who is as well known in the world of Jazz and blues as she is in that of Folk Music in a duo with the acclaimed American fiddler, kate kramer. She’s from Chicago but her music took her right across the USA and then to Europe where her first album ‘nobody knows You’ in 1988 won the Music Retailers Association Award for Excellence.

According to billy Connelly she is ‘nothing less than stupendous’ and she was described by Donny o’Rourke in The herald as having ‘A voice like a brillo pad dunked in honey’. She retired from touring over a decade ago to devote herself to teaching voice. She was reluctantly persuaded out

of retirement in 2009 to perform at Moniaive Folk Festival where an audience in excess of 300 gave her a standing ovation.

As far as singer songwriters go, keith hancock is aone-off.Forastartheplaysmelodeonasifhewas in a Rock band. Add to that one of the most powerful voices in the business, a penchant for writing songs which are politically satirical ( The boys of the old brigade); historical (The overland Lifeboat) and humorous (La Petamain) and you have someone difficult to categorise. he started his career in a band called The Electropathics beforedepartingforasolocareer.Hebrieflyre-joined them to record their only album ‘batteries not Included’. he recorded several solo albums of which ‘Madhouse’ was the most popular.

he was a particular favourite of the Folk Club circuit for many years, appearing at most of the major Festivals then he upped stumps and disappeared. Last year we tracked him down to his new home in bangkok and persuaded him to return for a one off series of concerts at the 2011 Festival. he agreed and is also contemplating a short tour of England.

Claire hastings, who is the supporting artist for all three concerts, is an outstanding young singer from Dumfries currently in her fourth year of the bA(hons) in Scottish Music at The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. She has performed at Celtic Connections, the Lord Provost of Glasgow’s burns Supper and as far afield as Rostov on Don, Russia as well as her home area.
