A Word From David:

May 2010

I purchased my ’57 Single Cab back in 1999 when I came back to San Diego after a two-year stint working for the “Man”. This SC was a replacement for the ’63 SC I had from ’97 to ’99. I sold it once I was back in San Diego because I wanted to purchase my roommates ’67 bug and regretted that decision. The SC was very useful, I actually

loaded it up 2 or 3 times and moved from Orange County to San Diego. Once I was done with the move, it was sold.

Shortly thereafter, I became a substitute teacher and my main mode of transportation was the ’67 Bug. Got me to the schools and back without many problems but the sweet taste of driving upright was missed. I let it be known to my group of friends at the time that I was looking for another SC. My buddy Abel (Current SV2s member and Bay Window Driver) was working at a middle school in National City back then and told me there was an SC for sale right across the street from the school. I went and checked it out and immediately knew it was a special SC, it was a pressed bumper truck with a brake light decklid. I asked the owner at the time if he had the rear bumper (I knew those were hard to find), but no luck. So the SC was purchased for the measly sum of $1400 (Yikes, remember those days?).

Eleven years later and the joy of driving the SC still exists. I just got it running again after a 2-year hiatus and the first few thing I did was take it to the San Diego Chapter meeting back in April. I didn’t make it home but I had a smile on my face all the way there. On the way home, I experienced some electrical malfunctions so I was towed home on a flatbed. A few weeks later, when I could get to it, I fixed the short and Ivan was kind enough to stop by and help me “Fine Tune” the ever so complex PICT 30-2 and I was once again on the road. This time I took a truckload of cans and plastic bottles to the recycling center and was rewarded with $75 (this goes straight into our son’s college fund.) The very next thing I did was take 2 truckloads of junk to the dump, using the truck for what it was meant to do: haul stuff.

After not using it for the last two years, it’s exciting to drive the SC to the store, to work, to the dump. Now I have a wonderful choice in the morning……..should I drive the ’63 LPZ CMPR or the truck? Hmmmmm

No matter how long it has taken you to get your Type 2 on the road, the sweet reward of that first nervous ride down the street is priceless.

David out.

Pyro’s “Coast –to-Coast Adventures” Continue -

We spend Christmas in Tampa every year. Since the Dormy had clocked about 4000 miles on it already, I took some time to do a little maintenance on it. Replaced the broken CV joint rubber boots, washed the greasy gunky mess that issue left under it, rotated the tires and changed the oil. That would have it ready for the Miami VolksBlast weekend.

These guys in Florida do have it together! The weekend started Friday evening with a block party at “Wizards” which is a VW repair shop. So we ended up just driving 5 hours straight to it. Was dark already when we got there but early enough to score a good spot right across where the live band would be playing. Met a bunch of cool people from the Miami VW scene and had a great time!

World famous Gerson was in attendance with the funky green double cab!

Saturday’s event was a poker run called the “Conga Cruise” which took us all over downtown Miami and area beaches. We’d go to check points along the route and pick up a card. The end of the cruise took us to a place called “Betsy’s Burgers” and the best poker hand win’s a prize. We didn’t win anything but had a great time cruising the town. Met with Chris George, a long time SV2s member who had moved to Texas and Las Vegas but is now residing in Miami!!! The party there went on too as they had a dj spinning the tunes!

Cool “check point” in the cruise was at the Miami City Hall which is the place where they film the “Miami Vice” Show!!!

We followed this bus for a while. Anybody recognize it? The new owner just got it and doesn’t know who owned it in California.

The paint job on this bug impressed me quite a bit. Also here is the “foosed” bus from Alaska.

The TALL and short of it!

Sunday was a great day in that it was overcast with a good breeze but not too humid with the sun beating on us. This was the “VolksBlast” where they do close the street at a strip mall. Much like the cruise nights on Main St USA. Having the trailer with us, they had us park at the end so as to block the entrance too. Next to us is the “foosed” bus from Alaska! Was just featured in the HVWs mag.

Russell Miller Hits the Ground Running…Run With Him!

Here’s a sample:

I’m going to need to get some ideas for some chapter events for this year: May - Bob Baker June - The OCTO Classic weekend July? August - Familienfest 16 September? October? November? December - Christmas party I’m thinking maybe a bonfire and/or beach day. Maybe July? Members Appreciation Picnic? I liked Doheny Beach so we can include Orange county, November? How about a Halloween cruise night in October? Maybe camping or a road rally? Cruise and tour of Temecula or Orange or ? Palm Springs trip & camp would be fun. (Haven’t been since they installed the new cars on the tram.)

Please bring your ideas and/or suggestions to the chapter meeting. If you know other members, call them and remind them of the meeting.

Thanks, Russell Contact me at [email protected]

Westfalia Campmobile 67Westfalia-Werke KG. Wiedenbruck

The interior of the Campmobile 67 is designed, built and supplied by Westfalia-Werke, Wiedenbruck. Westfalia’s reputation for quality products was recognized by VW as early as 1952 when it was selected for development of camping equipment.

My 1969 VW Campmobile represents the accumulation of many years of experience in quality of design and manufacture. The Campmobile is designed to sleep two adults and up to two children. It also has a number of storage areas for gear as well as wardrobe space. Furniture is made of 9-ply laminated wood with all visible surfaces covered with mar resistant wood-grained plastic. The floor covering consists of two layers of plywood covered with noise reducing felt and PVC lining. The Westy is finished with beautiful Birch paneling throughout the interior of this bus. My early 1969 black plate Westy was purchased from Four J Motors formerly located in Huntington Park, CA was used for many a trip to Mexico City by the original/previous owner and his family until 1999 when the Bay entered into storage at Niland, CA.

On November 2006 the Westy came out of storage and was listed on Ebay. Being the highest bidder I bought the Bay on Thanksgiving day sight unseen. After towing the Westy home ( The prior owner even threw in a tow bar!), I went through two bottles of

Meguiar’s paint cleaner, replaced everything from brake cylinders, distributor, carburetor and anything that utilized rubber parts. The bus was looking, running, and stopping like new. I was pleasantly surprised to be told by the previous owner when picking up the Westy (not detailed in the Ebay description) that a recently rebuilt transmission and anear-new factory motor were installed prior to going into storage. The Westy came with a complete set ofservice records and was meticulously maintained by the original owner. I have kept my Westy in original stock configuration with the original factory pearl white paint down to its original ugly mustard-color seat covers. This Westy is an active camping unit and a daily driver and I consider it priceless.
