HEART TO HEART | page 2

Several months ago, volunteer Jean Schlittenhart, a registered nurse and graduate student, observed a need for some basic health and wellness training for the mothers at Anna Ogden Hall. “Many women in the program have not had sufficient mothering themselves,” Jean noted, “and are therefore a little unclear on how to proceed with their own children.” In a desire to address that need and with the backing of a grant from Bank of America, Jean created the Mom and Tot Wellness and Illness Prevention Program. The first two-day seminar was held in April and covered a wealth of information: the importance of drinking water rather than pop or juice; good nutrition and exercise; how to take your child’s temperature and the treatment of minor illnesses; and when to go to the doctor or emergency room. The multi-media presentation helped the moms to stay engaged, and Jean provided lots of opportunities for questions and answers about their specific concerns. One mom’s comments represented the general feedback: “I really appreciated the chance to

A Raven, a Widow and Some SpitI’m a little embarrassed to admit that when we first began to make plans for an automotive segment to our ministry and even as UGM Motors began to take shape, I never really envisioned a story like the one on our cover. It’s not just that Heather is a woman but that she never had any real interest in cars, and yet, God brought healing into her life through an automotive sales and repair shop. I really shouldn’t be surprised. Throughout history, God has revealed Himself in unexpected ways and used the ordinary to work the miraculous. He used three days in the belly of a whale to change Jonah’s heart and seven dips in the Jordan to show Himself to Naaman. He revived Elijah with food from a raven, provided for a destitute widow with a seemingly endless supply of oil, and spoke to Balaam through the mouth of a donkey. With spit and mud, Jesus gave sight to a blind man, and He directed Simon to take tax money from a fish’s mouth.

That same God is alive in the world today – choosing to reveal Himself and transform lives in ways we least expect. We plan and design programs with an end in

mind, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But one of the amazing things about God is that He is infinitely more creative than we are. He is the original out-of-the-box thinker, and just as in Heather’s case, He can bring about healing in ways we never imagined. C.S. Lewis once called God “the Great Iconoclast” – the image breaker. Ultimately, that’s the best thing about His surprises – we get a new and improved picture of Him, who He is and what He’s about in the world. I’m so grateful to work for an organization where God is continually surprising not only me but everyone associated – staff, investors, volunteers and residents. He takes this wildly colorful mixture of our varied contributions and creates something beautiful every single day. Thank you for being part of that. ●

setting like this. The surprise is that she credits UGM Motors with teaching her the meaning of love. As Heather, a single mother of three, entered the fourth phase of her recovery program at Anna Ogden Hall, she began to explore options for an apprenticeship with the educational and vocational coordinator, Tiffany Riddle. Tiffany suggested an office job, but Heather felt pulled toward UGM Motors. On the one hand, Heather acknowledges, this made absolutely no sense. She didn’t know anything about cars, couldn’t change her own oil, let alone tell a crescent wrench from a ratchet. On the other hand, she felt God leading her toward the garage, had a sense that her healing was meant to continue there. And now, as she approaches the one-year anniversary of that decision, it appears that God did have a hand in bringing her to the Motors and that His plan made perfect sense. Sitting in the Motors’ break room with a pink lunch bag at her side, Heather explained the healing that has taken place in her life: “I come from a background of domestic violence. My marriage wasn’t healthy at all, and I’ve been in situations where men hurt me, so men were really a huge struggle for me. I came into the garage to overcome those fears of men, to see men in a godly way.” While she anticipated healing, Heather has been amazed by the reality. The technicians have been

exceedingly patient in their teaching, she said, never tiring of her questions. When she failed her first test for certification in automobile inspection, the whole shop helped her study, and when she re-tested a few months ago, she passed. They’ve also made it clear that their concern for her extends way beyond improving her skills in car repair. She has shared her struggles during morning devotions, and they have responded with acceptance and prayer. “I would totally trust these guys with my life. I know that when they come to me to tell me something I’m doing wrong, it’s not because they’re out to hurt me. It really is because they want to see me be the best person I can be. It’s just incredible.” Heather has now moved into a service writer position. She handles customer calls, orders parts, schedules the technician’s jobs, and does preliminary inspections. When a customer describes a car’s symptoms, she has some idea what the problem might be. When a mechanic requests a part, she knows what to look for. She enjoys her job, but even more, she loves the place where she works. “I just feel really supported and loved. It’s like I’m their sister. I’ve never experienced that.” ●

59th Annual BanquetImpacting lives

The Union Gospel Mission 2010 Annual Banquet: Impacting Lives had a new twist from banquets past. Rather than a keynote speaker, videos and mini-interviews with audience members contributed to a Big Picture view of the breadth and depth of our various ministries, including the perspectives of long-term volunteers and investors, as well as employees, residents and graduates from our programs. For 59 years, God has been impacting lives through the Union Gospel Mission because of partners like you. It was great to take a day to celebrate that impact and the reverberations emanating from one changed life. Over 1,100 people celebrated with us, and $38,000 was raised to help provide meals, shelter and other

At first glance, UGM Motors could be mistaken for just another car lot on auto row. The new location at 7219 E Sprague – with a complete automotive repair facility and detail bay on site – offers a number of advantages over the old one. Instead of 20 to 30 cars for sale, the new lot holds 70 cars plus. The new repair shop has four bays, 3 hoists, and a separate detail bay – all in all, room for about 18 cars – making it possible to offer repair services to the community. Big improvements to be sure, but as the cover story illustrates, the original purpose of UGM Motors remains consistent: to provide job training and experience to both our clients and the community in a safe, healing environment.
