FIRST MONDAY
May, 2010
First Monday is a monthly mailing to Church Professionals and committee members in The Miami Presbytery from the Presbytery Staff including information of events and news of interest as submitted by appropriate Presbytery entities. Publication of such information does not imply presbytery endorsement of the views and opinions expressed or implied. This month we have included: 1. The Prayer List
2. The May Calendar
3. Tom’s Thoughts on Credibility 4. Presbytery News – What’s Happening Around The Presbytery. Reminder to all presbytery committee members: The “committee year” is changing, and with new members and chairs, the calendar may not be as accurate as I would like. If the date and time you were given by the committee chair differs from what I have, go with what the chair told you. Also, note that with a few chairs still in transition, I may not have gotten the word for a meeting. If there are any questions concerning a meeting that is not listed, contact the committee chair. Thank you for your understanding through this time of change.
Submissions must be in by the 25th of the month or the last working day prior in order to be placed in the packet. Email submissions to Tom Oxley at the Presbytery, [email protected].

How’s Your Credibility?
I’d been at Fort Hood, Texas for little more than 6 months when I was sent for an interview to become a General
Officer’s driver at 2nd Armored Division Headquarters. Somehow, I got the job, and for the next six months drove
jeep and sedan for Brigadier General Warner S. Goodwin, Junior. I can’t forget the sign that General Goodwin had
on his desk. It simply asked, “How’s Your Credibility?” General Goodwin was the assistant division commander for
support, and oversaw all the maintenance, medical, artillery and aviation assets for the division. As a young
soldier, I really didn’t understand the question. Surely, with the ranks he was dealing with every day, he didn’t
need to ask a question like that! I thought all commanders were above reproach, that an officer’s “word was his
bond”. This was several years after the My Lai problem in Vietnam and all the bad publicity the military got, along
with all the training we got to try to prevent that sort of atrocity from ever happening again. To believe in my
chain of command, to follow them into combat without stopping to question them, I had to believe they had the
best interest of the country, the Army, and the soldiers they were charged with leading in their hearts and minds.
Why would anyone need to question their credibility? (My memory is a bit hazy as to whether I actually knew
what that meant at the time, too.)
I’m much more mature now. In March, I hit that point at which the State of Ohio considers me eligible for senior
citizen discounts. And while I still don’t have any diplomas on my walls, I consider that I’m at least a person of
average intelligence. We don’t come through this much life and not learn something if we have kept our eyes and
our minds open. I used to consider myself uneducated, but a better phrase is self‐educated. With my interests in
history, I have probably given myself considerably more education in the specifics of that interest than I might
have gotten in four years of formal education. I’ll never get to be a rocket scientist, or sort out quantum physics,
but I can sit and discuss many moments in the history of the world with some degree of accuracy. Enough at least
to be given a chance to teach military history to students at the Army Chaplain School for a few years before I
retired.
Today, we must ask ourselves, how is our credibility. How do people see us? Are we trustworthy? Do we live in a
way that we hold as an example of the life our Lord wants us to live? The old, naïve person that I used to be years
ago would have assumed that working with leaders in the church would never see this question asked. Of course,
trust should be a given for people in that position. But the truth is not that easy. Too many people who were
entrusted with the care of congregations have been exposed by the harsh light of reality to be less than
trustworthy. Too many who have been trusted to take care of church funds, or facilities, property, especially those
entrusted to take care of our youth, have fallen short of the trust they were given. Examples are seen daily on the
evening news.
So, today, I ask you. Pastor, deacon, elder, educator, youth leader, trustee, musician, or members out of the pew:
How is your credibility? If it takes you more than a few seconds to answer this, maybe it’s time for a personal
audit of your credibility. Better to do a self review now than to have the question answered for you by others after
it’s too late to sort things out. Are you living the life Christ has called you to?
Prayerfully hoping you find the answer to be Yes,
Tom

Job Posting for Director of Youth Ministries, First Presbyterian Church, South Charleston, Ohio (www.scharlestonfirst.org) Youth ministry is a vital part of our congregation’s mission to share Christ in our community. God has given us an exciting setting for life-transforming ministry among youth. Ours is a ‘one-building’ school district of approximately 800 students. First Presbyterian Church is located within blocks of the district’s facilities. And our congregation possesses an exceptional commitment to youth minsitry as evidenced by our programs for youth from kindergarten through high school. We are located in the small city of Fairborn, northeast of Dayton, Ohio, and adjacent to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The church secretary position is a part-time position (24 hours/week, four days a week) with competitive hourly pay. We encourage all qualified candidates to apply. WHO IS AR&LW?
The Association for Reformed and Liturgical Worship is an association of ministers, musicians, scholars, congregational members, seminary professors and staff who care about the worship life of Reformed churches.
We are committed to the formation and ongoing training and support of those who prepare and lead worship.
We care about worship that is sacramental, incarnational, Trinitarian, ecumenically informed and rooted in the Reformed tradition.
We are convinced that worship can be faithful and creative, local and global, and is central to the church’s participation in the coming reign of Christ.
ANNUAL MEETING SCHOLARSHIPS Scholarships are available to help meet expenses for attendance of various categories of non-AR&LW members at the 2010 annual meeting of the Association for Reformed & Liturgical Worship in Grand Rapids, Michigan, this summer. • Representatives from Congregations in the Reformed Church Tradition. By way of a gift from Fritz West, scholarships are available for persons in congregations with an interest in worship—clergy or laity, including church musicians—to cover the registration fee and expenses up to a total of $250. Interested persons should make application by June 1. • Young Seminarians. In an effort to encourage the study and practice of Reformed and liturgical worship by seminary students who anticipate a long career in the professional ministry, Vicki Mackey has made available funds to provide scholarships (amount depends upon the number of applicants accepted) for young seminarians from or attending seminaries representing the Reformed church tradition. Applicants should make application by June 1. • Worship Faculty, Field Placement Coordinators, and Administrative Staff. Through a generous grant from the Myers Foundation, persons working in the area of worship at a seminary identified with the Reformed tradition can receive a scholarship in an amount up to $500 to cover the registration fee and expenses of transportation, lodging, and meals (maximum of two scholarships per institution). The deadline for application for this scholarship is April 15. Applications received after that date will be considered on an as-available basis. All applicants should include contact information and identify their seminary or church. Applicants for the West and Mackey scholarships should include a statement on why they wish to attend the meeting, and how they anticipate that attendance will assist them in forming worship leaders or their own preparation for leading worship faithfully. Applications for all scholarships should be addressed to: Association for Reformed & Liturgical Worship, c/o Spanish Springs Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 51176, Sparks, NV 89435 or emailed to [email protected].
