“God never gives you more

than you can handle.”

How many times have you heard

someone say those words? How

often have you said them yourself,

when you or someone you know

was struggling to cope with a

situation that just seemed like

more than one person could bear?

There have been times in the last

eight months when those words were at the forefront of my

mind as I have struggled to learn how to be a pastor and a

father. Sometimes it felt like the strain and the stress and

the lack of sleep was more than I could handle, physically

and emotionally.

But God never gives us more than we can handle, right?

Actually, He does. He often does.

Picture Pharaoh’s army leaving clouds of dust behind their

chariots as they bear down on Moses and the defenseless

Israelites. If Aaron had said, “Don’t worry, God never

gives you more than you can handle,” Moses would have

looked at him like he was crazy. The Egyptian army was,

without a doubt, more than they could handle.

Picture David, looking across the battle field at ten feet of

raw muscle protected by armor that probably weighed al-

most as much as David did. Goliath was more than he

could handle. Or picture Gideon, facing off with three

hundred soldiers against one hundred and thirty five thou-

sand Midianites. Read Judges 7. God made sure that he

would be facing more than he could handle.

Why? So that Israel would turn to the only One who did

have the power to handle the challenge that they were fac-

ing. So that Israel would give God the glory for the vic-

tory.

Sometimes God does give us more than we can handle.

Sometimes the challenges are too great for a human to deal

with alone. But we are never alone to face those chal-

lenges. When the strain seems too great then it is time to

turn to the Lord in prayer. And when He brings you

through then it is time to give Him the glory, as well.

So the next time you find your mind reaching for the

words, “God never gives you more than you can handle,”

pause for a moment. Recognize the significance of the

challenge. And maybe try saying instead, “God can bring

you through this. Why don’t we pray about it?”

TRINITY SENIORS are planning a

“Steeple Chase” for Thursday, June 7th. Leave by bus from Trinity’s parking lot. First stop: Concordia University to ad-mire the bluff restoration and the Chapel Triumphant. Next: lunch downtown fol-lowed by a visit to Historic Trinity on 9th and Highland to compare their early church history with ours. (At one time we were considered one congregation.) Our final stop will likely be at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church on 5th and Scott. The Pom-eranians living on Jones Island were part of this congrega-tion, so it also has a very interesting history. Space will be limited. Watch the Sunday bulletin for details. Walking will be kept to a minimum.

dia’s Living Grace luncheon as we celebrate Fashion through the Decades-We’ve Got Style! THE PASCHAL CANDLETHE PASCHAL CANDLETHE PASCHAL CANDLE The Paschal Candle (sometimes called the Easter candle) is meant to symbolize the presence of the risen Christ, the Light of the world, with His faithful people. This can-dle plays an important role in the Easter vigil ritual. When the Easter vigil is not ob-served, the paschal candle is placed on its stand in the center of the chancel before the first service of Easter day, and lit together with other candles. After the service on Easter day, the candle may be placed on a stand next to the altar, on the Gospel side (that is, the left side facing the altar), where it would remain for either the 40 or 50 days of Easter, lit for each ser-vice. Alternatively, it may remain in the chancel, in front of the altar, in order to give it special prominence during the season of Easter. According to an old tradition, the paschal candle is extinguished after the Gospel on Ascension Day sym-bolizing the fact that on the day Christ withdrew His visible presence from the disciples and returned to His Father. According to a more recent practice, the paschal can-dle remains near the altar or in the chancel until the end of the Easter season, after which it is placed near the baptismal font and lit whenever there is a baptism. This practice underscores the unity of the seven Sun-days between Easter and Pentecost, which, in the re-vised Church Year, are Sundays of Easter, not after Easter. The fact that the candle is placed next to the font during the Sundays after Pentecost highlights the close connection between Jesus’ death and resurrec-tion and our dying and rising with Him through bap-tism. Through this sacrament we share in the light and life of Christ. Where baptismal candles are presented to parents at the baptism of their children, these candles are first lit from the paschal candle, which normally stands near the font, except during the season of Easter. The baptismal candle is meant to be lit on each anniver-sary of the child’s baptism as a reminder that on this day he/she became a child of light. The paschal candle may also be used for funerals, in which case it is placed on its stand at the head of the coffin to remind the congregation of the scriptural promise that all who have been united with Christ in His death will certainly be united with Him in the resur-rection. Since in baptism we died with Christ, we be-lieve that we will also live with Him (Romans 6:8).

BETHESDA AUXILIARY DUES—Please support this

100 year-old ministry! We are offering the opportunity to

contribute 2009 annual dues during the month of May. All

women of Trinity are eligible to join and we strongly encour-

age more participation in this worthwhile ministry. Look for

our sign in the Gathering Room before or after services.

Your kind contribution of dues (at least $5.00) helps to en-

rich the lives of the special residents and clients of Bethesda

Lutheran Homes and Services and is greatly appreciated.

All money collected by the Auxiliary is used for special pro-

jects not included in Bethesda’s operating budget. Past do-

nations have included a variety of items ranging from vari-

ous furnishings and special treats to a $25,000 renovation of

the therapy pool as well as the purchase of lifts to aid in per-

sonal care.

Everyone is welcome to attend the Auxiliary meetings which

are held the third Thursday of alternate months beginning in

March. The May 21, 2009, meeting will be at St. John’s Lu-

theran Church, West Bend, starting at 11:30am.

Bethesda’s Mission: To enhance the lives of people with

intellectual and developmental disabilities through services

that share the good news of Jesus Christ.

Bethesda Auxiliary Delegates

Ruth Drehfal & Marjorie Kreienbrink

Dear friends at Trinity, The first thing I have to say is THANK YOU.

Thank you for the support, the letters, the

packages, the cookies and most of all the prayers. It

has all helped and continues to help day to day out

here. I am expecting to be home late April and can’t

wait to see all the friends and family I have there at

Trinity.

I thought that I could escape the cold and snow by

spending this winter in sunny Iraq and WOW was I

wrong. It’s quite the sight to see snow in the desert.

I have heard some things about what’s been happen-

ing with the economy back home and I pray that no one

from the congregation nor the church has suffered from

it.

Well, I have written this letter to say thanks for the

prayers and support, and also that it never stops com-

ing, not only for me but all of our troops both here in

Iraq and all over the world who are facing non-stop

trails every day.

Your faithful member, Cpl. James Wood
