Where We Were in April
Living With Violence I did not speak about it from the pulpit on purpose. I suppose there were lots of reasons. My number one reason was my frustration of how news agencies, organizations, churches, political parties, politicians, preachers, journalists and individuals seem to want to take advantage of every opportunity to be in front of a camera, microphone or word processor. They use the tragic events of our culture to promote themselves, their ideas and their agenda. I suppose I did not speak about it because I am weary of it. Weary of the brokenness in our world that has been brought on by the failure of the Church to be the Church the way Jesus taught us and the way Jesus called us. Everyday the number of hurting, broken people in this world seems to grow while the Church grows ever smaller; in our country in particular. IF: God is love (1 John 4:16) AND: the absence of love is fear AND: Perfect love casts out all fear (1 John 4:18) THEN: It would seem that our work and call is really rather simple. We have an answer to the fears that drive the brokenness, anger, hatred and violence of this world. God’s love and God’s grace. The ever increasing challenge seems to be our own desire for power and control in our lives, loves and relationships. At the very center of all the violence in our world today we find persons whose lives have come to revolve totally around themselves. They are the focus and object of their undying love and devotion. Even entire congregations can and do find themselves in this very same predicament. When Christ is no longer the center of your life, when Christ is no longer the center of the life of a congregation then Rules take precedence over Relationships and Passion replaced Substance. In recent months I have found myself confronted a number of times with this same kind of challenge among some of the organizations that I have worked with, and it sure takes the wind out of my sails and the passion out of my heart. AUMC has been a saving grace for me in that respect. Faithful, passionate, Christ-centered servants doing the thing that God has called them to do with joy. Folks that stand as multipliers in the Kingdom of God and seek to be a part of the solution rather than add to the problem. It seems to me that God, and the world around us need passion filled, Christ centered folks. Without them, we will have to continue to learn how to live with violence.

how we would have made it through the last month without your prayers, cards, calls, and visits. We are truly blessed to have such a wonderful church family. Thank you again for everything and I promise that my tree
