The Prez Sez April 20, 2005Everyone who attended the Spring “Tarp Off Tour” had a great time. Al and Dianne Benning

did a heck of a job setting up the Tour, and their efforts are certainly appreciated by me, and I trust, everyone who participated. I think we went about 50 miles, saw lots of interesting stuff, and theweather was absolutely awesome. We should definitely do this again next year; let’s hope the weather isgood. Thanks also to Scott Stastny for driving the “chase” truck in case someone had mechanicalproblems.

The annual Studebaker Indiana Swap Meet comes up on May 6th and 7th. Our Chapter hasbooth space reserved at the Fairgrounds where we will sell shirts, key chains and Studebaker flags topromote OUR Zone Meet for 2006. I know everyone enjoys the Swap Meet each year, so I hopeeveryone can make it this year. We could use some help manning the booth. I’ll be in South Bend onFriday, and Scott was going to cover the booth on Saturday. If we have a few people help cover thebooth for an hour or so, that will give us each time to do some of our own shopping. Let us know if youcan lend a hand.

Upcoming activities include the Lombard Lilac Parade and Pot Luck Picnic on May 15th. TheBennings have also made arrangements for our participation in a Memorial Day Parade, look forinformation elsewhere in this Starliner.

Our next meeting is on May 15th during the Picnic after the Lilac Parade; I look forward toseeing you all there.

Well, this Starliner has taken LONGER, than any in

recent memory, to produce. I’ve been pulling in bits and pieces, and have gotten a “veritable plethora” of stuff... the pile of“potential” stuff on my desk, when I started going BACK thru itthis morning, was WELL over a FOOT high!

I’ve got MANY interesting bits of information to share, soI’m just going to work my way down thru the pile, and hope youget some valuable info, and maybe a chuckle or two from it!

Latest update, from Mark Wheeler, SDC registrar, viazone director Larry Swanson, The Automotive Hall of Fame, at theFord Museums in Dearborn, MI, will induct J.M.Studebaker thisOctober, and WE are invited, any and all, as well as any Pre-1917Stude’s, to be displayed during this time, call Wayne Waltrip, 313-240-4000. Gaw,worked for the Swift Bros. Stude dealer in Stanton(when I was inhigh school), [and then for him for 30 years] [this is the closestMAJOR town. You’ve gotta believe... the population is about1300] to the Central Michigan Dragway in McBrides, where thePlain Brown Wrapper, etc. RUN each Sept.!! I’ll visit Karl Ralphmy next visit up there, and hopefully get some pics [he does a“pancake breakfast” monthly for his Great Grand Kids - - does itall himself].

My pal Frank Jeno, “discovered” his old Army Girlfriend, from when he was in England in the early ‘50's, in Australia, andhe spent Easter there, and attended the Adelaide Meet... pics areattached - pretty amazing... I tho’t they’ all be “utes”! [Larks madeinto pickups]

Frank Guadagno and Ed Manly DID their thing (takingMANY Pics) at the April meeting at Kapteyn’s (as did Pres Rolf),and at the Spring Dust-Off, SO well organized by Al and DianeBenning... so we’ve got a BUNCH of PIC’s... as I’m working onthe column... I’m thinking that this issue WILL be a BONUS issue, with over six sheets!![which is the “one-stamp” limit]... soENJOY!!!

Then, there’s the Keith [private, very Rich(Rockfordarea)] School Show, reported by Roscoe Stelford and Jack Willis, where 7 of the hundred or so cars, were S/P products...[amazing!]Roscoe and Jack’s story attends the pics.

Got the flyer on the Lake Geneva Poker Run,,,, and knowthat the Avanti’s have always done a LOT on this puppy, but thatWE have never done much.... will run the FORMS next month, andHOPE we can make this Great CHARITY event an ANNUALevent!!

Contact Bill and Wilma Morris about the 2005 PierceArrow Meet in Springfield, IL, July 13-17... for a LOT of [email protected] or 630-469-9138 or pierce-arrow.org to get inon the fun... the NEW Lincoln Presidential Library MUST beworth the TRIP!!... and Dad can Look at the OLD cars!!

Thee latest [June] issue of Cars and Parts, in addition tohaving HALF their Stude ads from our Chapter [see want-ads], hasa VERY interesting article on Vacuum Wipers (don’t I remember,as a VERY small child, borrowing uncle Felix’s Airstream, to visitAunt Joanna’s in Denver, and it RAINING every mile of the way(while we were going UP, at least!!) Check out the article on pp.62-63, and see the June, 2004 for more vacuum info.

ANYbody that’s interested in ELKHART LAKERACING!!!!, May 13-14-15 are the Vintage Racing Assoc

[email protected] Or 785-246-1578 [home] or 785-221-2288 [cell], or 5220 NE Indian Creek Rd,Topeka, KS 66617.

For those of you who are going to Portland, an update onthe “CARavan” the Iowa/Missouri folks are doing will includeFord Stoecker, driving his diesel pickup AND pulling a car trailerto help anyone who might have major mechanical trouble along theway - - pretty nice, no?

Many times, over the years, I’ve plugged a magazine Iget, called Skinned Knuckles, which has always been a “fountain”of all kinds of Old Car information... their March issue’s cover’sfirst story is “Small-Block Studebaker V8" (which goes thru thehistory of our V8's, quite well, I thought), and announces a NewColumn “Trucks are Auto-Mobiles Too”, by Clell Ballard, who hasbeen contributing to the SDC for over 20 years, and whose pictureat the head of the [to be monthly] column shows him with one ofhis WWII Studebaker trucks. The stories make up nearly 8 pages,in a 50-page magazine, which was pretty good, I’d think. If you’dlike to subscribe, it’s $24/year, or $63/3 yrs... 175 May Ave.,Monrovia, CA 91016 By the way, the April issue has a Stude Indyracer pictured on the cover, with a story about their use of STOCKengines at Indy in the 30's in a 6 ½ page article.

Hopefully, Mark and I will get a couple of his cars backon the road later today, and that we’ll see lots of you in Lombardfor the Lilac Parade!

Hey, it’s Nearly MAY, and your Dues are DUE in June,so anybody getting a “Jump” on them will be ahead of the game!

Well, my friends, keep that GREASY side DOWN!!

Parade and Pot Luck Picnic Plansby Rolf SnobeckThe Black Hawk Chapter will be participating in the Lombard Lilac Parade for the 3rd year, on Sunday, May

15th, 2005. The parade will go, RAIN OR SHINE.

We will again line up in the South lot of Glenbard East High School, located on Main Street, North ofRoosevelt, South of St. Charles Road [east of I-355].

This year’s picnic and meeting will again be after the parade, in the same spot as last year: Lombard CommonsPark, located north of the school to Maple St, and east to Edgewood, where there is a Picnic Shelter and restrooms. There are playing fields and such, for the kids [all ages]. This is near the end of the parade route.

Schedule is as follows:11:00 to 11:30 You MAY bring foods to the picnic shelter in the park,

providing a cooler for storage of perishables... we will have a couple of folks there to watch the spot [volunteers, anyone?]

11:30 to noon Arrive at Glenbard East South Lot for lineup and judging.

12:30 to 1:00 Judging of cars

1:30 to 3:00 Parade

3:00 to 7:45 [latest] Picnic and Meeting at Lombard Commons Park

7:45 to 8:30 Cleanup and sign out of facility.

At the conclusion of the parade, proceed eastbound on Maple to Edgewood, then north one block to the park... we’llagain block off parking spots for the cars, along the west side of Edgewood.

Please let Scott Stastny know as soon as possible if you are coming, so he can let the Village know what they’ll bejudging.

If you have questions on Parade Day, call me on my cell phone at 630-514-1867.

This is an “unplanned” potluck, and we are NOT buying chicken this year, so bring a couple of items, to share, andwe’ll be FINE! So far, one couple is bringing hamburgers, another a veggie tray, and someone else is signed up for apasta salad with meat, and a dessert. [At this point, we have 16 signed up, but only those 3 “specified” what they wereplanning to bring.]

Be SURE to Come and Have Fun!
