The 7th International Symposium on Fluid Con-trol, Measurement and Visualization (FLUCOME’03)was the latest in the well established series ofFLUCOME International Symposia. The firstFLUCOME conference was held in Japan in 1985. to assist in ruling over his huge empire which includedSouthern and Northern Italy, Switzerland, Austria,Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, East-ern and Southern France.

Federico II, named marvel of the world because ofhis wide knowledge and broad interests, was multilin-gual from childhood, understanding Latin, Greek, Ital-ian and Sicilian dialects, German, Arab and Hebrew; hewas a very clever and stubborn emperor, but also apoet, an amateur philosopher, interested in astrology, geography and science.

FLUCOME’03 was held in Sorrento, Italy, fromthe 25th to the 28th of August 2003. The 7th Sympo-sium attracted, by far, one of the largest number ofparticipants in the history of the meeting. More than300 scientists, coming from the five continents andspecifically from about 30 countries all over the world, plus over 70 accompanying persons, attended the Sym-posium. The majority of the participants came fromJapan, Italy, United Kingdom, United States ofAmerica, Korea, Germany and France.

The success of the Symposium has to be mainlyascribed to the patient work of the members of theInternational Steering Committee which included manydistinguished scientists in the broad field of fluid flow. This is the best opportunity to thank all of them onceagain.

The popularity of the meeting is a true reflection ofthe growing importance of fluid flow research and ofthe ability of its practitioners, as demonstrated by theCD ROM Proceedings (ISBN 0 9533991 4 1) whichwas edited by me and Prof. Ian Grant of Heriot-WattUniversity. The Proceedings took full advantage of thepowerful electronic image capture and manipulationtools which have lately become available and are nowcentral in the work of many scientists.

In the CD ROM Proceedings, an editorial step for-ward by using new developments in electronic publish-ing was taken to give authors the opportunity to presenttheir work in full colour and to include some movingimages. Since the fluid flow speciality largely embodiesvisual observation of dynamic processes, the digitalimages, gave the opportunity to convey an immediateimpression both of the science and the excitement, ex-perienced by the researchers in their individualendeavours. The CD publication clearly illustrated boththe high quality of the submission and the blurred posi-tion between art and science which the fluid flow re-search holds.

The use of the electronic communication and mediafor conference paper submission and program develop-ment also allowed for a high level of dialogue betweenparticipants and editors making possible, for the re-sulting proceedings, a degree of homogeneity in paperappearance which normally would be attainable only ina journal environment.

The 237 papers, from many of the world’s leadinglaboratories, which are contained in the CD ROM, are

indexed and the full text is searchable for keywords oraccording to the Symposium Program. An archive copyof the CD is lodged in the National Library of Scotland.Anyone interested in obtaining a copy of the CD ROMProceedings of FLUCOME’03 may contact:[email protected].

The Symposium actually commenced on Sundaynight, August 24, with a warm Welcome Reception, which was held in the Hilton Sorrento Palace Hotelwhere all the participants had the chance to meet oldfriends and/or to make new acquaintances.

The Opening Ceremony was held on Monday, Au-gust 25, early in the morning, with a hearty welcomefrom the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering of theUniversity of Naples Federico II, Prof. Vincenzo Naso, who conveyed also the greetings of the Rector of theUniversity.

At the beginning of each working day, a speaker, selected among renowned specialists in different fieldsof fluid flow, delivered an authoritative lecture in Ple-nary Session. Prof. Wolfgang Merzkirch of Universityof Essen discussed Fluid Mechanical Problems in FlowMetering, Prof. Ching-Jen Chen of Florida A & M Uni-versity described Some Aspects of Nanotechnology,Microtechnology and Biomedical Applications, Dr.Antonello Cogotti of Pininfarina Industries treated FromSteady-State to Unsteady Aerodynamics andAeroacoustics. The Evolution of the Testing Environ-ment in the Pininfarina Wind Tunnel while Prof. Ben T.Zinn of Georgia Institute of Technology reported onThe Real Time Control of the Lean Blow Out Limit inPre-Mixed Combustors for Reduced NOx Emissions. On the last day, Prof. A. Tamir of Ben-Gurion Univer-sity of the Negev entertained the audience by consider-ing The Interaction Between Art & Science: From MonaLisa to Einstein.

Prof. W. Merzkirch addressed two major problemsin flow metering, the first one concerning the generationof the signals that are processed to obtain the values ofthe volumetric flow rate and the second one regardingthe performance of a flow meter in a not-fully devel-oped flow. Two examples were discussed in detail.

Prof. C. J. Chen described some aspects of the de-velopment in micro systems using magnetic nano par-ticles to detect biological components for medical andclinical use. The magnetic nano particles were encapsu-lated in a specific protein that mixed in the fluid solu-tion. The advances in micro devices such as micro-pumps was also treated.

Dr. A. Cogotti reported on the continuous develop-ment of the testing environment in the Pininfarina windtunnel which allows investigations on full scale carmodels. He treated the problems of having a rollingroad under the car, of decreasing the overall tunnel noiseso as to perform acoustic measurements and of repro-ducing the real on-road conditions including a controlledlevel of turbulence.

Prof. B. T. Zinn discussed an active control sys-

Report on International Conference on 'Hydrocarbon flow measurement'September 22-24, 2003 - FCRI, Palakkad, Kerala, India

by Dr.V.Jayaraman, Convenor

The Conference on the Hydrocarbon flow measure-ment was held during 22-24 September '03 at FCRI,Palakkad, Kerala, India, organised jointly with the sup-port of M/s Petroleum India International, (PII)Mumbai, India.

This conference has been chosen to disseminateinformations on various measurement techniques prac-ticed in hydrocarbon flow industries and to promote anexchange of technical, research & experience within theindustries of oil/gas connected to the hydrocarbon, andto serve as a common platform to scientists, engineers& other field engineers.

More than 250 delegates from various countriesparticipated in the conference. More than 50 papers

were read during the Conference in 16 technical ses-sions spread over 3 days. Chairmen of Technical Ses-sions were formed from flow experts drawn from Hy-drocarbon sectors both in India and abroad. There wasan exhibition of flow products consisting of 20 Stallswherein the manufacturers, industries and other flowrelated agencies had displayed their products whichattracted large crowds and response during this confer-ence. On the concluding day, there was a technical paneldiscussion.

The technical papers were interesting, posed sev-eral problems being faced by Hydrocarbon flow indus-tries and most of the papers were applied in nature. This conference has brought users and technologists

tem, to detect lean blow-out precursors and to stabilizethe combustor behaviour while maintaining low NOxemissions, based on optical and acoustic measurements. The control redistributes the fuel between the mainpremixed flow and a pilot injector and can accomodatealso variations in flow conditions.

The fifty two Technical Sessions held during theSymposium covered the following topics: Aerodynam-ics, Bioengineering, CFD Applications, CFD Methods,Combustion, Compressible Flows, Cylinder Flows, FlowControl, Flow Measurements, Flow Metering, Flow Vi-sualization, Fluidics, Heat Transfer in External Flows,Heat Transfer in Internal Flows, Hydraulics, Jets, Ma-chine Flows, Micro Flows, Mixed Convection, NaturalConvection, Optical Methods, Particle ImageVelocimetry, Pneumatic Components, Pneumatics, Sepa-rated Flows, Synthetic Jets, Tunnel Testing, Turbulence,Two Phase Flows, Unsteady Aerodynamics.

Finally, on Friday August 29, many participantsspent a delightful day cruising in the bays of Naplesand Salerno. The yacht departed from Sorrento harbourand, amongst other things, made stops at Faraglionirocks of Capri, “li Galli” islands and Positano. A“marinara Neapolitan lunch” was served on board.

During its Sorrento assembly, the FLUCOME In-ternational Steering Committee decided that, from nowon, the Symposium will occur on a biennial basis (i.e.every two years and not every three as it was before)and that the 8th International Symposium will takeplace in Chengdu, China, from the 22nd to the 25th ofAugust 2005. Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan Prov-ince which is the home to giant panda and 85% of theseanimals are found in the habitat of the northwest moun-tains of this region.

The Symposium Chairman is Prof. Qing-Ding Weiof Peking University who is already actively workingto repeat, if not to improve, the success of Sorrento’s

meeting. Further information is available by [email protected].

Therefore, let me say to all the participants in the7th Symposium: Arrivederci in Chengdu on 2005 forthe 8th FLUCOME Symposium.
