MASS INTENTIONS

Pope Francis on the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit teaches us

to see with they eyes of Christ, to live life as Christ

lived, to understand life as

Christ understood it.

That is why the living water, who is the Holy Spirit,

quenches our life, why he tells us that we are loved by God as children, that we can

love God as his children and that by this grace

we can live as children of God, like Jesus.

And we, do we listen to the Holy Spirit?

What does the Holy Spirit tell us?

He says: God loves you. He tells us this. God loves you. God likes you. Do we truly love God and others as Jesus does? Let us allow ourselves

to be guided by the Holy Spirit. Let us allow him to speak to our hearts and say this to us: God is

love; God is waiting for us; God is Father; He loves us as a true father loves; He loves us truly and only the Holy Spirit can tell us this in our

hearts.

Let us hear the Holy Spirit. Let us listen to the

Holy Spirit and may we move forward on this

path of love, mercy, and forgiveness.

-Pope Francis Vatican City May 2013

Receive the Holy Spirit – After his resurrection from the dead Jesus appears to his

anxious Apostles and, knowing their fear and uncertainty, pours forth the Holy Spirit

upon them and bestows the gift of peace. For the next forty days he promises that he

will be with them always and that he will send the Advocate to be with them as they

will be called to continue his work in the world. Finally, after ascending to heaven,

Jesus sends forth his Spirit at Pentecost to fill the Apostles with confidence and

courage in order to go out to all the world to tell the good news and grow the Church.

As the On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative continues to unfold we are called to prayer for a new

Pentecost in the Church of Pittsburgh. This new outpouring of the Holy Spirit can bestow the peace we seek

in the midst of change and planning for the future. God’s Spirit can also fill us with the confidence and

courage that all of us – clergy and faithful alike – will need to do our part to build up the Church and make it

ever more alive! Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.

May 9, 2018

Dear St. Joseph Parishioners,

On April 28, 2018 it was covered widely in the media and announced at all of our Masses that Bishop Zubik

has made his final decisions concerning parish groupings and mergers in regards to the diocesan “On

Mission for the Church Alive!” initiative.

I hope you have had an opportunity to read the Bishop’s letter revealing his decision that St. Margaret Mary,

Joseph and St. Catherine of Siena be grouped together effective October 15, 2018. I am thankful for our

grouping, for St. Joseph and St. Catherine of Siena are great parishes, in close proximity and with similar

demographics. We already work together and, in my opinion, our eventual merger will be easer to effect.

I am honored to be able to stay at St. Margaret Mary’s and lead the new grouping. We are grateful that the

Bishop has assigned a full-time Parochial Vicar, Father Sean Francis, Chaplain Father Michael Yaksick, as

well as our own Deacon, Dr. Robert Jancart.

Finally, as the Bishop’s letter indicates, the Saint Margaret Mary, St. Joseph and St. Catherine of Siena

grouping will be limited to a total of nine Sunday Masses, including Saturday Vigil Masses. After conferring

with representatives from the Finance and Pastoral councils as well as Father Rich Jones, Pastor of St. Joseph,

Coraopolis and Father Lou Vallone, Pastor of St. Catherine of Siena, Crescent township and taking into

consideration the recent Mass attendance counts, seating capacities and the needs of all 3 Parishes, I am

recommending that we amend our Mass schedule from St. Joseph Church on May 29, 2018. In other words, St.

Joseph Church will no longer have a priest as of May 29, 2018. Consequently, the priests (Father Frank

Kurimsky and Father Sean Francis) currently stationed as St. Margaret Mary Parish in Moon Township, will

cover the Masses at St. Joseph. In addition the Bishop has promulgated a new “particular law” which will

restrict every priest assigned to a grouping to offering a total of three Sunday Masses each weekend

(including Saturday Vigil Masses). Therefore, the following interim Mass schedule is being proposed only

for St. Margaret Mary and St. Joseph at this time with additional potential changes for St. Catherine of

Siena in the future. This is only a temporary schedule until October 15, 2018 when St. Catherine of Siena,

Crescent Township will be included and the Mass schedule for the three parishes will be looked at again. An

updated Mass schedule for all three parishes in our grouping will be effective October 15, 2018. In other

words, this interim Mass schedule for St. Margaret Mary and St. Joseph will be reconsidered at the time of the

inclusion of St. Catherine of Siena in our three parish grouping final Mass schedule effective October 15,

2018.

The Diocese o Pittsburgh requires that parishioners be given the opportunity to offer feedback to changes to the Sunday Mass schedules. Therefore, if you would like to make any comments on the proposal above, I ask that you submit them in writing to me no later than May 30, 2018. My email address is [email protected].

In closing, my sincere belief is that together, praying and collaboration with the people of St. Joseph’s, we will be able to fulfill the Bishop’s mandate that we “offer a deeper relationship with

Jesus and His Church to everyone” in our community. Sincerely in Christ, Father Frank Kurimsky Pastor
