i.ABSTRACT

Work performed by D. MacMillan (Lie. #D20561) on claim block 1099057 was carried out between Nov. l, 1996 and Jan. 10, 1997. The purpose of the project was to investigate an aeromagnetic anomaly considered to be a propsective kimberlite diamond target. Exploration work consisted of linecutting (3300 ft. BL, 24,000 ft line), magnetometer surveying (27,000 ft @ 252 stations), geological grid mapping @ l in. = 1 00 ft.) and two overburden till samples.

Exploration work has outlined a main anomaly in the north central grid area with dimensions of approximately 1200 ft. x 1500 ft. Overburden sampling encountered one kimberlite indicator mineral in sample TL97-1 taken over a 3000 gamma mag zone in the northern sector of the anomaly. Overburden Drilling Management Limited has identified one GIO purple pyrope garnet in the sample.

The presence of the GIO garnet as well as the physical geometry and size of-the anomaly suggests the area has good potential for a kimberlitic intrusion. Further work is warranted.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

In the fall of 1993 a local prospector uncovered diamonds in Michipicoten River alluvium. The Ontario Geological Survey announced that the find consisted of two microdiamonds of l .05 and l. 13 carats. Follow up work by the OGS in the 1993 and 1994 field seasons consisted of regional overburden surveys which encountered many kimberlite indicator minerals in the Wawa area. A total of 309 KIMs were collected in 250 till samples suggesting that kimberlite intrusions in the Wawa area may be a host for diamonds.

l. l Location and Access

The prospect is located 12 miles SE of Wawa Ontario in the Township of Noganosh within map area NTS 41N16. The prospect is located on claim block 1099057 held by D. Mac Millan of Sault Ste. Marie Ontario. The area lies south of Highway 101 and is accessible by the Tik logging road. The grid area is situated approximately at kilometer 9 of the Tik road.

2.0 GEOLOGY

2.1 Regional

The project area lies within the Wawa Subprovince of the Superior Province of the Canadian Shield. The belt is about 40 km. in width and strikes approximately northeast from Lake Superior. Supracrustal greenstone lithologies are Archean in age surrounded by Archean granitic rocks outside the belt.

The PreCambrium metavolcanic rocks in the belt are grouped in four major sedimentary- volcanic divisions (Sage ,1994). These consist of 1) intermediate mafic metavolcanic rocks; 2) intermediate - felsic metavolcanic rocks; 3) clastic metasediments and 4) chemical metasedimentary rocks. Granitic intrusives comprise the remainder of the greenstone belt.

2.2 Local Geology

Geology on the claim block is based upon sparse rock exposure with outcrop density less than 2^0 of the grid area. Rock types in the immediate grid area consist of granitic intrusives and tonalitic rocks which straddle the magnetic anomaly to the north and west (refer to map, enclosed). Structure in the area consists of a weakly to moderately developed E-W foliation with highly variable dips.

2.31 Granitic Intrusive

This unit is pinkish in color, fine to medium grained, subequigranular, massive to moderately foliated. The rock contains 40 07o quartz, 45 y* potassium feldspar, 5 0/* plagioclase and 10 Vo biotite.

2.32 Tonalite

This unit is light grey in color, fine to medium grained, subequigranular, moderately to well foliated. The rock contains 60 07o quartz, 1 5 07o plagioclase and 25 07o biotite.

3.0 GEOPHYSICS

3.1 Introduction

Magnetometer surveying was conducted using a McPhar M700 survey instrument. The instrument is a vertical field flux gate magnetometer. The measurement scale has a sensitivity of+A 5 gammas. The survey required 6 man days covering 5.17 miles of grid line and 252 stations.

3.2 Survey Results

A toal of two anomalous magnetic zones have been outlined on the grid area. The anomalies were delineated manually using qa 1000 gamma contour. The main anomaly occurs in the north central part of the grid with dimensions of approximately 1200 x 1500 feet. The anomaly is ellipsiodal in shape with an embayed southern edge. No coincident rock outcrops occur over the anomaly.

A smaller secondary one line anomaly was outlined at the western end of line 12N. The anomaly occurs over four stations. Rock exposure of granitic intrusive is situated within the zone. It is uncertian whether this exposure represents bedrock due to the low magnetic suseptibility of this rock which lies in in more magnetically responsive area.

4.0 OVERBURDEN SAMPLING

4.1 Introduction

Two glacial till samples were collectd along timber road cuts. Material was collected and screened down to a 2 mm size fraction. Processing and analysis of the screened fine fraction was conducted by Overburden Drilling Management Ltd. The labratory proceedure (Avrill and Mcclenaghan, 1994) is designed to recover gold and kimberlite indicator minerals including pyrope garnet, chrome diopside, Mg-ilmenite and chromite, (refer to Appendix B).

4.2 Till Samples

4.21 Sample T97-1 (BLO/15N)

Till material was collected from a timber road cut. Sample weight 19.7 kg.

Coarse Fraction: Angular to subangular, poorly sorted granules, pebbles @ 4 mm to l cm with local cobbles. Rock fragments consist of mafic volcanic, tonaltic gneiss and pinkish granitiod types.

Fine Fraction: Light brown to buff fine grained sand consisting of qtz + fspar + mica.

Fine/Coarse Fraction Ratio 70/30.

4.22 Sample T97-2 (14N, 2+50E)

Till was collected from a timber road cut. Sample weight 18.55 kg.

Coarse Fraction: Angular to subangular unsorted granules to cobbles, 4mm -15 cm. Rock fragments consist of tonalite gneiss, pink grantitic, fine grain mafic and medium grained mafic rocks types in order of abundance.

Fine Fraction: Red brown, fine grained sand consisting of qtz + fspar + mica

Fine/Coarse Ratio 50/50.

4.3 Results

Heavy mineral and kimberlite mineral detection on glacial sediments submitted to Overburden Drilling Management encountered one GIO garnet in sample T97-1. The purple chrome garnet was identified in the .25mm - .50 mm size fraction. Sample T97-2 contained no KEVIs.

5.0 SUMMARY

A. Overburden sapling has yielded one GIO garnet in sample T97-1 over a 3000 gamma zone of the main magnetic anomaly.

B. The 1200 x 1500 foot dimension of the main anomal;y falls within the lower size range of a kimberlitic intrusion.

C. The mag zone is in close proximity to the McVeigh Creek Fault, a major regionalstructure.

C. Preceeding factors suggests the possible presence of a diamond bearing kimberlite intrusion and further work is required to follow up on this possibility.
