May 19, 2020 Unit 4 – Organisms and Interdependence
Essential Question: How does an ecosystem function?
Criteria for Success
•Identify examples of living & non living things
•Develop a criteria for classifying things as living or nonliving
•Identify characteristics that all living things share

Learning Target: I can explain the difference between living and
non-living things.
Do Now: Copy and Complete:
1- “Is It living?” Identify which of the following is living:
Learning Target: I can explain the difference between living and
non-living things.

2- Explain your thinking. What “rule” or reasoning did you use to
decide if something on the list could be considered living?
Traits of All
Living Things
I- Any living thing is called an organism.
II
III -Even though all organisms vary, they all share some of the same
traits/ characteristics. All living things:
All living things need a proper place to live, water, air and some
type of food source.
Let’s Watch the Video Clip-
What traits do all living things share?????

Tool Box 50 – Continued
All Living Things …….
A) are organized and made up of cells (the smallest unit of an
organism that carries out all the functions of life)
B) grow and develop ( due to an increase in size or an increase in the
number of cells)
C) respond to stimuli ( anything that causes a change or response);
usually this response results in movement
D) maintain homeostasis (regulation of an organism’s internal, life
maintaining conditions despite the changes that occur around them)-
making internal changes to maintain the right amounts of food and
water in the cells
E) Use energy- which either comes directly or indirectly from the
Sun
F) reproduce- make other living things like itself
G) Has a lifespan- time period in which organism is alive
Check for Understanding
So Now Let’s Think About This!
We just learned about the characteristics/ traits all living things
must share. So now let’s make a decision! Revisit your do now
answers and see if you want to make any changes!
1) Does each one you chose share these traits?
2) Are there any you left out that should be included?
Hint: There are 17 living things on the list!
Exit Slip- Match the trait to the real life example. Some traits are used
twice.
made of cells grow and develop uses energy has a life span
responds to stimuli reproduces maintains homeostasis
1. The child cried when receiving her shot.
2. Juan measured 54 inches on his 10th birthday.
3. Humans have a body temperature of 98.6°.
4. The marathon runner ate 2 bowls of pasta before the race.
5. The cat had 5 kittens in her first liter.
6. Monarch butterflies live between 2-6 weeks.
7. The infant gained 2 pounds in three weeks.
8. Dogs pant to cool themselves down.
9. The dog jumped up and barked when the door bell rang.
10. A human body contains about 30 trillion cells, some bacteria have
only one!
Enrichment: Similar Yet Different!
Even though all living things share certain traits ,there are many
difference among them. However, there are some organisms that are
very similar yet have distinct differences.
Choose two of the following pairs of organisms and make a chart
showing their similarities and differences.
Frog and Toad Dolphin and Porpoise
Butterfly and Moth Cheetah and
Bees and Wasps Sheep and Goat
Lizard and Salamander Crocodile and Alligator
