This offering supports the establishment of 1000 new congregations by 2020 and provides opportunities for New Church planters to set tables in new places throughout the United States, Canada and right here in our region. 你愿意和别人分享神的晚餐吗？在特殊的日子里，基督教堂（基督使徒）捐款支持建立 1，000个新的聚会。

自从 2001年，栽种了 730个新的使徒聚会中的一个聚会以来，新教堂栽种者道格·科瑞兹写下恩典基督教堂的开始。圣灵降临节捐款在 2020年支持建立 1，000个新聚会并在全美国、加拿大和你的地区为新的教堂种植者提供机会----在新的地方设立桌!

亲爱的弟兄、姊妹们，

Sunday Sermons 8:30, 9:30 and 11:00 am - Pastor Bob Hanna

May 20 "Teach Them", Matthew 28:18-20 This is teacher appreciation Sunday. We will be focusing upon the portion of the Great Commission that call us to teach others.

May 27 Pentecost Sunday, Acts 2, Our service will focus on both the birthday of the church and a remembrance of those who died in our congregation, in military service and among our family and friends.

Bites of Bread from Bob Every Sunday is important to us as Christians because Jesus arose from the grave on Sunday, the first Easter. Yet, Sunday, May 27th is a very special Sunday. This is the day we will be celebrating Pentecost. The word "Pentecost" means fifty, coming as it does 50 days after Easter. The Jewish people of Biblical times had celebrated Pentecost for generations. They called it Shavuot, the feast of Weeks. It was celebrated as a harvest festival, coming 50 days after Passover. Barley harvest marked the beginning of Shavuot. In more recent times, the emphasis changed from a harvest festival to emphasis upon the giving of the 10 Commandments at Mt. Sinai.

In the Christian church, Pentecost marks the time when the Apostles and Jews from around the world were assembled in Jerusalem to celebrate Shavout.

While they were gathered, the Holy Spirit came upon the people gathered (as described in Acts 2). Although the people spoke many different languages, the people were able to understand all that was being

said. As the people were gathered, Peter spoke to the crowd and as a result 3,000 people were

baptized. The Holy Spirit came upon them as tongues of fire. Because of this, the color of Pentecost is red. Plan to wear red and attend worship on May 27 as we celebrate what is called the birthday of the church.

Associate Minister Position With Matt Gordon going to Corvallis First Christian Church to be their new Senior Pastor, there is discussion about where we go from here.

In light of our current finances, we are not seeking to hire a new Associate Pastor. Some of Matt’s responsibilities will be reassigned to other staff members. Several of the ministers in our congrega-tion expressed their willingness to fill in some of the gaps, especially while Pastor Bob is on sabbatical this summer (July 1 – August 14). We have a great line-up of speakers for our summer services (see below).

We may need to hire some part-time help to do specialized ministries. That still allows for a significant cut in our expenses. Please keep our current deficit in your prayers and if you are able, help us to pull back into the black. If you sense God calling you to step into a leadership role, please let Pastor Bob know.

I wanted to say thank you for listening, supporting, working and serving with me these last three years. I look forward to hearing and seeing what happens at First Christian Church in Salem. Please know that I will continue to pray for this church and hope to see you soar in the years ahead.

For Children and YouthFor Children and YouthFor Children and YouthFor Children and Youth A Little Light from Laurie First, a big “THANK YOU!” to all our dedicated teachers, to our children for such a fine job of singing and ringing, and to the families for sharing their babies.

Writing my article this week is proving to be difficult. Working for a church has taught me that churches have a lot of transitions and truth be told, I HATE CHANGES! Families come and go, beloved ones pass on, programs change, kids grow up and move from programs, teachers and leaders move about and staff move on. It can all be overwhelming.

Recently, a group of us were discussing these transi-tions. I began to pray for peace and understanding. God, as the parent, knows how everything will turn out, even if I do not.

As I was praying, a scene described in a favorite child-hood book, “A Wrinkle In Time” came to mind. The author describes a neighborhood on a different planet in which everything is the same: the children, the block of houses, the bouncing balls and even their mothers that stuck their heads out the doors the same time to call the kids for dinner.

During my prayer, I believe this came as a reminder to me that God did not create a bland world filled with zombies who look and think alike. Instead He blessed us with variety. He calls people to fulfill His divine purpose, which means we move, we change, we grow and we burst from our earthly cocoons to spread our heavenly wings and soar into His kingdom.

God never changes, but the world is ever-changing and so are we, exactly as He planned it.

So as I watch loved ones pass on, change jobs, graduate, move from the Sunday School program, move from our church and town; I must remember not to dwell on the cocoon left behind, but rejoice in the brilliance of a new adventure.

Thy will be done, not my will.

Flurries from Chris I would like to thank everyone who expressed their gratitude and appreciation for the youth on Youth Sunday. They did an amazing job. I encourage every-one who would like to express your gratitude to the youth to write a card that we can pin up in the youth lounge that the youth will be able to read whenever they are there.

In the way of thanks I would like to thank everyone who helped out with Youth Sunday. While I was able to name off all of the youth I did forget to mention the adults that stepped up and helped the youth with the worship services. Lucas Anderson assisted with the music by playing the piano and singing with the youth on a number of songs. Julie Towery was help-ing to keep the services going and helping with cues for the youth. She was also helping out with some of the logistical pieces of setting up the spaces and making sure everything was good to go.

Continuing in the way of Thank You’s this Sunday is Teacher Appreciation Sunday in which we will recognize all of the teachers that have served our church over this past year. Thinking about the teachers for the Youth Department requires a bit of reframing of the general idea of what a teacher is. For the past several years we have been calling them youth Sponsors. However, after a recent ministry conference that the staff attended I am more apt to call them mentors. A mentor is someone who walks beside the youth and guides them when the circum-stances fit. With this thought in mind I can’t help but think of a certain group in the church that does not necessarily work within the youth department but are still mentors to our youth. The group that comes to mind is the Praise team. This is a group that consis-tently nurtured and walked with the youth in their expression of worship through music.

THANK YOU to everyone who has served as a mentor to our youth over the past year.

'Use it or Lose it' Brain Training Overview Sunday, June 3 9:30 - 10:30 am, Fellowship Hall Led by Shari Ridings, Certified Geriatric Wellness Instructor

If you are an older adult who would like to learn more about improving your concentration and mem-ory, this Brain Training overview introduces skills and techniques to improve those cognitive abilities.

This program was developed by Western Oregon University's own Dr. Robert Winningham. Using scientifically supported interventions you can learn about exercising different parts of your brain, making new brain connections and improving your concen-tration. Lifestyle suggestions for a healthy brain will be shared.

Will You Join Us? Beginning Tuesday, June 5, we are beginning a PRAYER SERVICE in the Sanctuary of the church. This gathering will begin at 6:45 pm for approxi-mately one hour.

The Thursday Evening Bible Study group has been studying the Holy Spirit, with the need for prayer to be a priority for our congregation. A Prayer Service allows us to stay within the witness of the church’s third core value which states: We are “A PRAYING CHURCH … We believe that prayer is central to our connection with God.”

A statement made by Jim Cymbala, of the Brooklyn Tabernacle, is “Prayer is the engine that drives the church.” We are encouraging you to join us as we witness the power of prayer.
