For fifty days the Church as been immersed in the mystery of new life with the risen Lord, a mystery of new life with the risen Lord, a mystery that draws us into the rela- tionship of Jesus and the Father. In the Resurrection, Jesus breaks and the Father. In the Res- urrection, Jesus breaks the bonds of human limitations and promises that we too will be raised. In the Ascension, the Fa- ther receives the beloved Son into the divine realm, and with the sending of the Spirit, we become a dwelling place of the Ad- vocate, who reminds us of all the Lord has told us. The coming of the spirit is the birthday of the Church. Luke describes this divine intervention in human affairs with the sound of wind and tongues of fire-divine energy that con- sumes and amazes the gathered assembly. The impact of the Spirit is destined to shape the kingdom of God through the efforts of all those renewed by the Spirit-including us. Paul tells the Romans that their very identity comes from the Spirit dwelling within them. They can no longer live “according to the flesh.” The Spirit has made them adopted children of God. As “joint heirs with Christ” they are called to be witnesses by the power of the Spirit in their very lives. In the Gospel according to John, Jesus himself delivers the Holy Spirit to the Apostles alone I the upper room, breathing on them and commissioning them. Clearly, the Spirit comes in many ways. The Spirit of Pentecost is not confined by language, place of origin, gender, or social status; it is a universal giſt that reminds us to put flesh, bones, hands, and feet on the teachings of Christ. It calls us to the mighty works of God, speaking them ourselves and seeing them in others. The giſt of the Spirit is our source of life, not only for fiſty days, but every day. What does the image of fire say about the work of the Spirit? What evidence in the Church points to the work of the Spirit? What does it mean to you to live accord- ing to the spirit?

Pentecost

Easter Time ends with the celebration of Pentecost. For fifty days the Church as been immersed in the mystery of new life with the risen Lord, a mystery of new life with the risen Lord, a mystery that draws us into the rela-tionship of Jesus and the Father. In the Resurrection, Jesus breaks and the Father. In the Res-urrection, Jesus breaks the bonds of human limitations and promises that we too will be raised. In the Ascension, the Fa-ther receives the beloved Son into the divine realm, and with the sending of the Spirit, we become a dwelling place of the Ad-vocate, who reminds us of all the Lord has told us. The coming of the spirit is the birthday of the Church. Luke describes this divine intervention in human affairs with the sound of wind and tongues of fire-divine energy that con-sumes and amazes the gathered assembly. The impact of the Spirit is destined to shape the kingdom of God through the efforts of all those renewed by the Spirit-including us. Paul tells the Romans that their very identity comes from the

Spirit dwelling within them. The Spirit of Pentecost is not confined by language, place of origin, gender, or social status; it is a universal gift that reminds us to put flesh, bones, hands, and feet on the teachings of Christ. It calls us to the mighty works of God, speaking them ourselves and seeing them in others. The gift of the Spirit is our source of life, not only for fifty days, but every day. What does the image of fire say about the work of the Spirit? What evidence in the Church points to the work of the Spirit? What does it mean to you to live accord-ing to the spirit?

Practice of Charity “Breathe deep!” That’s common advice at Providence Center for Medically Fragile Children in Portland, Oregon. Youngsters with profound disabilities receive round-the-clock care there, including respiratory therapy. The psalm we hear on Pentecost tells us that without God’s breath, we perish, but with God’s breath, we are created anew. At Providence, residents also take in great gulps of sustaining love form visit-ing Catholic school students. See more about the center, on http://oregon.providence.org/oru-services/c/center for medically fragile children. Next time you settle down at pray, begin by taking deep, slow breaths. Imagine you are inhaling the life God has offered you and exhaling everything else.
