Youghal News....May14th 2009

By Christy Parker Report of the Town Clerk on Matters Arising from the MonthlyMeeting of Youghal Town Council held on 20th April 2009. YOUGHAL LANDFILL SITE:Further to the recent visits from the EPA, Ross Daly of RPS (act-ing on behalf of the Environmental Protection Agency) did a fullodour survey of the facility last Friday morning, 1st May. He vis-ited both facilities (including AVR) and reported that the landfillhad been given a "clean bill of health". No fugitive odours weredetected even on the windward side of the slob bank area which isjust a mere 100m from the working face of the landfill. YOUGHAL OUTFALLS:It was proposed that Cork County Council could carry outimprovement works as an advance contract to the main outfalls atFront Strand, Paxes Lane and Foxhole to improve the dispersionof effluent and allow for discharge over all stages of the tide. Tothat end the existing outfalls have been included in a bathymetricsurvey which is currently being competed for the proposed mainoutfall. Based on the results of the survey, dispersion modellingwill be competed and recommendations made on the worksrequired, if worthwhile, at each outfall. While the dispersion modelling contract has be procured and willcommence as soon as the bathymetric survey information is avail-able, Atkins have suggested that any works to the other outfallswill take some months to progress as they would need to completethe modelling, assess the works requirements, carry out detaileddesign, prepare tender documents, tender for a contract etc. If it is required that Cork County Council progress the originalproposed works to the Front Strand storm outfall(s) urgently as aseparate contract, then Cork County Council can take thatapproach. The outfall is storm water only, so modelling is not nec-essary, although some redesign from the original proposal isrequired to reduce the cost. PERMANENT REINSTATEMENT OF GROUND INVESTI-GATION WORKS IN YOUGHAL: Atkins are finalising method statements for the permanent rein-statement of these works with the contractor. Cork CountyCouncil should have a confirmed start date on Tuesday 5th Maybut it is anticipated works should start this week. The ResidentEngineer team are monitoring the temporary reinstatement andhave instructed the contractor to complete repairs on a number ofoccasions. It is noted however that the temporary reinstatement inmany cases is raised slightly above the level of the road to allowfor settlement, perhaps this is the basis of some of the concerns. In relation to any future issues with the reinstatement, Condition21 of the road opening licences includes "Responsibility for theexcavation and the reinstatement remains with the licensee for amaintenance period of twenty four months from the date of issu-ing a Maintenance Period Commencement Notice by Cork CountyCouncil. Any remedial works required during this maintenanceperiod shall be carried out by the licensee to the requirements ofCork County Council. The maintenance period shall be extendedfor a further period of twenty four months from the date of adefects notification or the date of significant remedial works, whichever being the later". If there are issues with the permanent reinstatement in the future, the Contractor will be required to return to site to repair as neces-sary. REDBARN BLUE FLAG APPLICATION:Cork County Council have had discussions with An Taisce regard-ing the requirements of a Redbarn blue Flag Status following AnTaisce’s inspection during the 2008 season. The following areaswill be the focus of attention for 2009. 1) Traffic Management Plan Required. a) At present cars can access beach. b) Needs to be a car free area with swimming (zoned off areas). c) Deal with the issue of driving on dunes. 2) Dumping in the Dunes Area:a) Put in place a litter/seaweed management plan.

b) Deal with litter on the beach road. 3) Safety Risk Assessment - Needs to be conducted in the 2009season. 4) Blue Flag application to be submitted to An Taisce by the endof January 2010.REMEDIAL WORKS AT YOUGHAL HARBOUR:I wish to inform you that funding of 400,000 (inclusive of VARand all other costs) has been approved by the Department ofTransport to fund remedial works at Youghal Harbour in 2009 inrespect of repairs to the inner and outer walls of the pier head andrepairs to the northern corner of Greens Quay. The funding to finance these works is available in theDepartment’s budget for 2009. Accordingly, the remedial workswill be undertaken without delay, and invoices forwarded to theDepartment at the earliest opportunity. The last day for submittinginvoices will be 27th November 2009. The final sitting of the current town council spanned approximate-ly 45 minutes -brief by normal standards. While a distinct air ofpre-occupation pertained, the members nonetheless adhered to thebusiness at hand in the spirit of dutiful responsibility. Cllr Michael Beecher took some issue with an item in the TownClerk’s Report on Minutes arising from the previous meeting. Thereport recorded that on May 1st Ross Daly, on behalf of the EPA,had visited both Youghal landfill and the adjacent waste treatmentand sludge drying facility Eras Eco (formerly SVR). "The landfillhad been given ’a clean bill of health’ noted the report. (Curiously, there was no declaration on behalf of Eras Eco). The inspectoreven concluded that, "no odours were detected on the windfill sideof the Slob Bank area which is just 100m from the working faceof the landfill." Cllr Beecher insisted that odours were detected onSunday morning and through Monday of this week. "Certainlythere’s something wrong at the weekends," he alleged, to noresponse. Congratulations: Cllr Mary Linehan Foley congratulated "Pobalscoil na Trionoidestudents Aisling Siochru, Adam Dalton and Aisling Coleman who, along with their teacher Ms O’Neill," who earned the school firstplace in the final of the Millipore Science Competition at theSheraton Hotel Dublin last week. The school beat five otherschools in the contest. The councillor also congratulated JohnQuill and David O’Callaghan who lined out for Ireland’s under-21rugby side away to France recently. She further paid tribute "yetagain to Sarah Ryan," whose outstanding pole vaulting broughther another All-Ireland title at Limerick last April 25th Cllr Beecher congratulated Fr. Michael Bermingham on hisappointment as Parish Priest to Blarney. Sympathy: Councillor Beecher remembered the late Mary Crowley whopassed away last week and remarked on her "great work as anorganist in the Parish church throughout the years." Cllr LinehanFoley endorsed the sentiment and recalled being tutored in pianoby Ms. Crowley. Town Foreman’s Report: Cllr Liam Burke said there have been very many requests for theplayground at Greencloyne to be opened. He asked that the coun-cil make a special effort to get it open for the primary school sum-mer holidays. Other issues to which the councillor drew attentionincluded a very large pothole outside 13 Kilcoran Park, a requestfor speed ramps at Chestnut Drive, footpath repairs needed at 29Sweetfield and the unfinished footpath at Windmill Hill. Hesought a commencement date for landscaping works at Sra naSali. He echoed residents’ requests for footpaths from the junctionof Kilcoran and Seafield Rd to Chestnut Drive. The councillorsaid there are persistent complaints of dog fouling in the town. Heasked that extra bins for dog faeces be placed on the LighthouseHill and promenade. In conclusion Cllr Burke asked that the div-ing board be put out for the June weekend.

YOUGHAL TOWN COUNCIL MAY MEETINGPage 2

Cllr Mary Linehan Foley asked that the trees in North Abbey ceme-tery be trimmed. She said an abandoned car on Kilcoran Road need-ed removing, with the owner possibly traced via the chassis number. The councillor asked that the council write to the owner of a derelictsite on Greens Quay, which is now being used as a urinal by peoplefishing in the locality. "It needs cordoning off or something," she sug-gested. She wasn’t sure if a letter had been dispatched to the ownerpreviously and what, if any, response was forthcoming. The council-lor was also concerned about the "deadly dangerous" footpaths fromKilcoran Road to Chestnut Drive. She proceeded that residents atGreencloyne were keen for double yellow lines to be installed nearthe entrance to Mistletoe Grove estate, as parked vehicles are hinder-ing residents’ views when exiting the estate. Cllr Michelle Hennessy said Bayview Grove needs traffic calmingmeasures and that residents from 1-18 have "signed a petition infavour." She said an accident is waiting to happen due to a downhillentrance and signs indicating children at play would also be welcome. The councillor also suggested that shrubs on the Mill Road round-about be trimmedCllr Sandra McLellan asked that CIE be asked to erect a timetable atthe bus stop at the Fair Field as visitors have no way of discerning bustimes. She called for repairs to a collapsed handrail by the steps at thebottom of Raheen Park. The councillor had several representations tomake on behalf of residents at Sarsfield’s Terrace. She said some res-idents want to know if the council will paint the grotto statue. Sheraised the issue of the proposed car park for the area, observing that"the planning notice went up in 2005 and there’s been no work since."She asked that the council consider traffic calming measures for thearea and said residents would also like the road widened at the bottomof the terrace as cars are being damaged. The councillor then said thata hole "the size of a small vehicle" needed re-filling at Kilcoran Park. She also said residents at Springfield Court wanted to know when thecouncil would be taking charge of the estate. Town Clerk Liam Ryansaid he estate is still the developer’s responsibility and it normallywould take a few years before a council took over. However, he esti-mated it would occur "probably in about 12 months." Cllr McLellan asked that the Town Clerk issue a press release on thesituation regarding the closed playground, echoing Cllr Burke’s earli-er insistence that it is the most common issue being aired on pre-elec-tion doorsteps. "People don’t know that it was closed on health andsafety grounds, let alone if it is re-opening, she pleaded. Responding,Mr. Ryan said the playground was closed on safety regulations lastyear. He said he would not mention the estimates for repair and refur-bishment due to it currently going through a tender process, but thathe had, with great difficulty, secured two sources of funding. Thesewere mainly through Dormant Accounts from the Dept ofCommunity, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs’ Pobal sector. This moneywill be delivered but the second funding from Cork County Councilhas since been withdrawn due to the recession. However, he said, heintends to replace the Cork County Council shortfall "from some-where" and that tenders would in fact be opened later in the meeting, setting the ball rolling although the actual date of work commence-ment was neither given nor yet decided. Cork County Council Items: Cllr McLellan asked that repairs be conducted on the footpath outsideCondon’s flower shop as accidents had occurred there. "The ownerhas had to administer first aid to two people in the past fortnight," shesaid. Cllr Linehan Foley asked whether there are plans for more bins at theClaycastle beach. "If there are no bins there, people will litter thebeach," she stated. The councillor also pointed out -not for first time-that a new footpath at Dominic Collins Place does not connect withthe rest of the pathway. "There are a lot of elderly people there and itsdangerous for them," she said. Cllr Sammy Revins said parking on the footpath at Tallow Street ispreventing people with buggies from passing. He asked that theCounty Council look at the issue. Cllr Dave Savage sought a guarantee that lifeguards would again bedeployed in Youghal this summer, with the inherent consequences forblue flag status to bear in mind. The town engineer reassured him thatthe service for 2009 will not differ from that of 2008. Cllr Burke repeated his ongoing request for a report on the provisionof a new library for Youghal. He delivered "the usual list of brokenfootpaths," they being Tallow Street, junction of South Abbey/Strand

Street and South Main Street east side. He reported a missing sign forthe Strand from the top of the bypass, relevant to traffic from Co.Waterford. A dog fouling sign at the entrance to Claycastle car park ispartly obscured by shrubbery, he proceeded, while a concealedentrance sign is missing from Summerdale Lawn along with unfin-ished road surface. Mr. Murray said he’d replace the missing con-cealed entrance sign if he couldn’t locate the original! Mayor’s Business:Mayor Casey conveyed the gratitude of Paddy de la Cour and familyfor the recent civic reception to mark his retirement from the fire serv-ice. The mayor next outlined an application from the family of the lateEmer Casey for the approval and support of the council to plant a treein her name. He said the family would wish to have the tree plantedprior to fourth anniversary of her passing and also the staging of thirdannual Emer Casey 10k road race/walk on May 24th. The familywished to locate the tree, which they would provide, in a sea viewlocation, with railed surround and accompanied by a plaque. Thecouncil’s guidance as regards any restrictions or procedures was alsosought. Mayor Casey reflected that Emer’s death from ovarian cancerhad sparked the Emer Casey Foundation, which was now effectivelysaving lives through its fundraising and cancer research projects. "Itperhaps sounds strange to say but the good that has arisen from thistragedy is absolutely outstanding," he said earnestly. The chamberunanimously supported the request. Correspondence: Mayor Casey referred to a copy of a letter received from Australian-based Mr. Ed O’Shea (formerly Midleton). The letter was accompa-nied by a copied report from the Sydney Morning Herald referring thelife and Youghal native Paddy Kenneally who emigrated to Australia, aged 11, with his family in 1927. He would serve with distinction asa commando in the Australian army in East Timor and New Guineaduring WWII. The article dealt with Paddy’s love and respect for theEast Timorese people and his recognition -contrary to the successiveAustralian governments- of their assistance and suffering during andafter the war. Paddy exhibited what every Youghal person would dowell to emulate. Having lambasted, in 1996, Prime Minister GoughWhitlam’s support for Indonesia’s 1975 invasion of East Timor, in2005 he addressed then Prime Minister John Howard on national tel-evision. Urging that his government give the newly independent EastTimor "a fair go," on the eve of Anzac day he informed Howard thatif he did not comply, "I’d rather you didn’t come to my Anzac dayparade." The government capitulated a day later, offering East Timor50% of a disputed gas field. Up the Youghal boy indeed! PaddyKenneally, a hero in war and in peace, died recently aged 93. MayorCasey spoke fondly of several meetings with Paddy -also know by hisfirst name John. Painting the town: Town Manager Patricia Power said up to 20 businesses had applied toparticipate in the subsidised, house-painting heritage regenerationproject for 2009. "Six of these have already been approved and areready to go," she told a delighted chamber. A further 10 are to beassessed this week. The increase marks a huge increase in the 2008uptake, which was stymied by bad weather. Tenders for playground remedial work: The Town Clerk opened the received tenders. He added that there maybe some others to follow being possibly included amongst receiveddrawings, which it would not be practical to open at the meeting. They would be added later. Those he opened were, in no particularorder, as follows: Creative Play Solutions; All Play Ltd.; PriorityConsruction Ltd.; McGinty & O’Shea Ltd.; Bowen Construction Ltd.:Go Play Ltd.; Metro Building Contractors Ltd.; Spraoi Linn Ltd.:Peter O’Brien & Sons Landscaping Ltd. There was a considerableprice variation amongst the tenders, ranging (not necessarily in orderopened) from approx. 55,000 to approx. 120,000. The tenders willnow go for technical assessment. And finallyCllr Burke wished his fellow election candidates -from within andwithout the chamber- the best of luck for the June showdown. Heurged all the electorate to use their vote and to "use the proportionalrepresentation system to cast preferences for every candidate. Everycandidate deserves a preference," he stated. Finally, Cllr Revinsbridged the gap between the outgoing council and the next adminis-tration with the timely warning that, "Bad candidates get elected bypeople who don’t vote." June 5th will tell.

Youghal fitness enthusiastsget a helping hand from

Aura this summer Local people thinking about kick-starting a new fitness regime forthe summer and beyond have been presented with the perfectopportunity, thanks to a generous new membership offer this Mayat Aura Youghal Leisure Centre.Aura has made the gesture to the large numbers of people current-ly eyeing up treadmills, spin bikes and fitness classes and to incen-tivise others in the area, who may not have considered makingtime for a new exercise routine, to improve their health and to stayin shape during the hottest months of the year."There is always an increase in the number of people attending thegym and starting new exercise regimes around this time and thisyear will be no different. We tend to find that many people decideto start exercising again at the start of the summer and the reasonsfor this vary from person to person," explained Tracy Kennelly,Operations Manager at Aura Youghal."It may be because they have let things slip over the springtimewith work commitments, or their regular workouts may have start-ed to take a backseat to their social life. Either way, people natu-rally want to look their best in the good weather and starting to puttogether two, three or even four workouts a week is one of the bestways to achieve their health and fitness objectives."We know from experience that sometimes everyone needs a littlebit of encouragement to start exercising again, rather than justthinking about it. This is why we have taken the decision to dropour single annual membership fee by 100 from 499 to 399.This offer will run for the month of May and is limited to the first50 applicants," explained Tracy. "While it is always great to see that people are concerned abouttheir health and fitness, it is even more important that they main-tain their exercise routine long after the summer is finished."Signing up for an annual membership to Aura will provide evenmore motivation to stay in shape, not just for the summer, but allyear around, while the 100 reduction is especially welcome in thecurrent economic climate."We expect these 50 discounted rates to literally fly out the door,so we are encouraging all those interested to contact the centrestraightaway and speak to one of our advisors."Whether it is trips to the gym, swims in our 25-metre pool, or toattend one of our many fitness classes, Aura provides somethingfor everyone, whatever their age of fitness level," added Tracy.Meanwhile, Aura is currently taking bookings for the next set oflessons in ’Aura Swim Academy’. The 10-week course is suited tochildren of all ages and swimming abilities and will help them tolearn how to swim and improve their swimming skills. Those interested in applying for Aura Youghal’s annual member-ship discount, or enrolling their child in ’Aura Swim Academy’,should contact reception on 024-91614.

Munster Senior and Junior Track and Field Championships:at C.I.T Track Cork on Monday 4th MayOn Bank Holiday Monday the Munster Senior and JuniorChampionships took place in Cork. Youghal Athletic Club wasrepresented by 5 Athletes. Sarah Ryan took gold in the Senior PoleVault and also in the Senior Javelin.Sarah opened her Pole Vault competition with a first time clear-ance at 2.10 and cleared 2.30 and 2.50 metres on her first attempts, she was unlucky at 2.70 coming close on her 3 attempts. The goldwas Sarah’s first in the Munster Seniors and adds to her All IrelandInter varsities she won the previous week. Sarah won the javelin competition with a throw of 25.92 metres;she threw in the 4th round of the competition. This was her firstJavelin competition in over 2 years and shows she has not lost anyof her technique. Emer Kelly finished 2nd in the Senior Pole Vaultcompetition with a clearance of 1.90, this was Emer’s second com-petition in two days having cleared 1.70 the previous day in theCounty Juveniles.Nikita Savage took gold in the Junior Pole Vaultcompetition with another excellent display of Pole Vaulting.Nikita opened the competition at 2.70 and cleared it on her 2ndattempt and then cleared 2.90 on her first attempt, which broke theexisting Munster junior Record. The bar went to 3.10 and againNikita cleared it on her first attempt. Nikita was unlucky at 3.30when she failed narrowly 3 times to get the height. Her 3.10 clear-ance and a new Munster junior record show what a talented ath-lete she is. In the Senior women’s 800 metres Amanda Crotty rana brilliant race to finish 4th in a time of 3 minutes. This was amajor improvement from two weeks previously where she ran3.10 for the 800 metres in the Leevale open Sports. In the Seniormen’s Javelin Eamon Flanagan finished 3rd with a throw of 25.30metres.

WE ALWAYS HEAR CARS POLLUTE BUT COWS AREWORSE !!Livestock are responsible for 18 percent of greenhouse-gas emis-sions as measured in carbon dioxide equivalent, reports the FAO.This includes 9 percent of all CO2 emissions, 37 percent ofmethane, and 65 percent of nitrous oxide. Altogether, that’s morethan the emissions caused by transportation. The latter two gases are particularly troubling - even though theyrepresent far smaller concentrations in atmosphere than CO2,which remains the main global warming culprit. But methane has23 times the global warming potential (GWP) of CO2 and nitrousoxide has 296 times the warming potential of carbon dioxide-------------------------------------------------------------------------------MINI AND FORD ARE GREENData published today by environmental website, Clean GreenCars, shows that Mini is the manufacturer with the lowest CO2output.Mini has an average CO2 figure of 130.5 g/km of CO2, whichmeans it is ahead of schedule to meet the EU target of 130 g/kmof CO2 by 2012. In second place is Fiat with 134.6 g/km of CO2and in third place Toyota with 136.5 g/km of CO2. In terms oftonnes of CO2, the sharpest reduction has come from Ford, whosemore economical new Ka and Fiesta models mean that new Fordsnow emit 10,000 fewer tonnes of CO2 per year. At the bottom ofthe table are Land Rover and Porsche, which both emit just over250g/km of CO2.I wonder do green party members take this intoaccount when they buy cars.!!!!!!!!!!!! Even Fine Gael’s energy spokesman Simon Coveney this weekendcalled for ’’radical and ambitious thinking’’ on the issue by the gov-ernment and the ESB his idea is that we all drive electric cars andthen fuel up at poles and points all over the place. He wants us alldriving Renault Megane’s powered by battery.

The down side our National grid is powered by fossel fuels, carrange is very bad ,recharge time is too long, its not a perfect worldvandalism to poles charging points etc ,this will need alot morethinking hydrogen is the way to go but it needs a bit more plan-ning. ____________________________________________________

FUEL IS EXPENSIVE SO WATCH YOUR DRIVINGWhat Car did a fuel economy test recently where they tested menand women and gave them an 11 mile test behind the wheel mostimproved their fuel economy by 20% ,A woman by the name ofChristina White improved her fuel economy by 53% by followingthe tips below Christina White reckons all drivers should be taught eco-drivingtechniques before they hit the road. ’Why isn’t this stuff part of thedriving test?’ she said. ’It would be far less difficult to pick upthese skills if you were taught them when learning to drive.’Thebiggest thing is go up the gears driving along in 3rd gear all roundtown kills u MPG.(Miles Per Gallon)

TOP TEN WAYS TO SAVE FUEL1. Maintain momentumYour car uses most fuel getting away from a standstill Theanswer? Don’t let it stop - keep it moving. Pull away slowly andanticipate the road ahead, keeping a good distance from the trafficin front. That way, you’ll need to stop fewer times.2. Change up earlierChange up a gear as early as possible. The fewer revs the engineis doing at any given speed, the more miles it’ll do to the gallon,so you’ll save cash.3. Shed weightDon’t lug around empty child seats or a boot full of tools. Thelighter your car is, the less fuel it’ll use.

4. Choose an eco routeThe way you get to places makes a big difference to your fueleconomy. Also remember that a longer route may ease might cutyour fuel bills if there’s less stop-start traffic.5. Slash your speedAs long as you’re in top gear, the slower you’re going, the moremiles per gallon you’ll do. Cruise at 60mph rather than 90mph onthe motorway and you’ll use roughly 50% less fuel.6. Stay in gearModern cars shut off the fuel injectors when you’re coasting ingear. Staying in gear for as long as possible (rather than coastingwith your foot on the clutch) will save you cash.7. Switch off electronicsSwitch off your air-conditioning and you could save up to 20% onfuel. Other electrics (such as headlights, stereos and sat-navs) alsorequire extra energy from the engine. 8. Check your tyre pressuresUnder-inflated tyres create excess drag. Pump yours up to the cor-rect pressures and you’ll use up to 25% less fuel.9. Streamline your carRemove your roof rack or roof box when not needed, and wind upwindows whenever possible (open windows cause drag, too).10. Stop-start in traffic

Some modern cars will automatically switch off the engine whenyou come to a halt. If yours doesn’t (and you’re stationary for morethan a minute), do it yourself. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------Half of motorists can’t afford a breakdownMore than half of motorists would struggle to pay if their carbroke down, according to research from leading insurance special-ist, Warranty Direct. As the credit crunch continues to ravage the economy, 53 percentof drivers admit that the tightening of belts means they can illafford the average repair bill of 320. According to WarrantyDirect data, one in three will suffer a mechanical failure annual-ly*.Although nearly three quarters (72%) of the 3,000 owners sur-veyed claim that they would be lost without their cars, more than10% said budgets were so tight that they wouldn’t be able to stumpup anything at all to keep their car on the road."This is worrying - some motorists are just burying their heads inthe sand," said Warranty Direct’s Duncan McClure Fisher. "In theshort term you might save a bit of cash by not servicing your car,but eventually it is going to need work doing on it and you’re onlyincreasing the likelihood that it’s going to be a very expensiverepair job on a ’mobility-fatal’ part."-------------------------------------------------------------------------------FIVE IN A ROW FOR LOEB, ELENA AND CITRO¸N SØbastien Loeb, Daniel Elena and the Citroºn Total World RallyTeam made it five wins in a row and a maximum 50 world cham-pionship points on the Rally of Argentina over the weekend toextend their lead at the top of the 2009 World Rally Championshipto 19 points. It was an all round successful weekend for the Citroºn Total WorldRally Team when Dani Sordo and Marc Marti took second spot onthe podium, just 73 seconds behind Loeb, to increase their lead inthe Manufacturers’ standings.

Motoring With Ger LeahyTHE MINI AT 50: AN ICON

The project that became the Mini was born out of the fuel short-age following the Suez Crisis in 1956.Over all sales of cars plum-meted,(sound familiar) but sales of cars with engines under 1 litrequadrupled in a year and bubble cars started appearing onroads. The head ofthe British MotorC o r p o r a t i o n ,Leonard Lord, said’God damn thesebloody awfulBubble Cars. Wemust drive them offthe road by design-ing a proper miniature car’.A team of just eight, headed by AlecIssigonis, set to work. The Mini was revealed to the press in April 1959 and first went onsale that August. With an 848cc engine mounted sideways to savespace, tiny 10" wheels and seatbelts and wing mirrors as optionalextras, this was motoring pared to the bone. But thanks to its smallsize and the rubber cones providing the suspension, the Mini wasnippy and had responsive handling.Originally launched as AustinSeven and the Morris Mini-Minor, the name Mini first appeared in1961 and fitted so perfectly that it stuck. The VariantsThe estate version with the deluxe wooden trim was one of theestate variations of the Mini.Known as the Countryman or theTraveller, it was produced between 1961 and 1969 and came withvan style ’barn’ doors. There was also a Mini Moke a car developedfor the army but had no real ground clearance ??The Mini alsocame in a utilitarian commercial van form, swapping the chromegrill for a punched metal one.In production from 1960-1982, itcould carry a 1/4 tonne loadThe Mini was a great rally car and made history by winning theMonte Carlo Rally in the hands of Irish man Paddy Hopkirk. It wasa tuned version called the Mini Cooper SThe Mini becomes hipFilm stars and sports stars have one.The Mini’s low price didn’t prevent it appealing to the rich andfamous. At the height of the swinging sixties, celebrities likeGeorge Best and all The Beatles were seen driving around inMinis. George Harrison’s even had a psychedelic paint job.TheMini Cooper’s film-stealing role in The Italian Job in 1969 sealedits iconic status and there was another version of the film madewith the new cars a few years ago.The Mini rebornIn the 1990s and 2000s, what remained of the British car industrywas sold on and broken up. BMW owned the remains for a while, but retained the Mini name when it sold Rover on in2000.Developed between 1995 and 2001, the new Mini launchedin April 2001.A totally new car, it does share a sideways 4-cylin-der engine, front wheel drive, sporty handling and an uncannyresemblance with its ancestor. The millionth Mini rolled off theproduction line in April 2007, six years after production began. That’s just one month longer to reach the magic million than theoriginal.

MOTORING TIDBITSBritish car production fell 51.3 percent year-on-year in March asfalling demand forced manufacturers to cut output sharply

Auto manufacturing has a global turnover of around $2.6 trillion, more than the GDP of France.

Good news at Ferrari despite the fact that the world financial cri-sis has resulted in a severe collapse of the car market, the PrancingHorse ended the first quarter of 2009 with a trading profit of 54million euro. This is not only the highest profit recorded in any ofthe various Fiat Group sectors but is also one of the few positivesigns to appear in the first quarter results of any automotive com-pany anywhere in the world.

Chrysler LLC announced that, as a result of the comprehensiverestructuring plan agreed to by many of its stakeholders, it hasreached an agreement in principle to establish a global strategicalliance with Fiat SpA to form a vibrant new company. It willallow Chrysler and Fiat to fully optimize their respective manufac-turing footprints and the global supplier base, while providingeach with access to additional markets. Fiat powertrains and com-ponents will also be produced at Chrysler manufacturing sites. Well the Irish Government did not go for a car Scrappage schemeand strangely enough Fine Gale are against it as well sure it wouldonly generate millions any way if in any doubt the UK govern-ment have done it and industry experts who are wondering whateffect scrappage will have on car sales might want to use Hyundaias a barometer. In the first week after the announcement, enquiriesat the company’s dealerships are up 400 percent, with buyersclamouring to make sure they can secure cars before stocks - orthe government money - run out. When will our leaders have aplan??

INTERMEDIATE HURLING CHAMPIONSHIPYOUGHAL 1-14 V MALLOW 2-10Played in Ballynoe this turned out to be a big heart stopper.Youghal started well with Nigel Roche going well in the middle ofthe field. Our lads were ahead by 1-6 to 0-6 at the break but all thedrama was yet to come. Within minutes of the restart Mallow were

level and looking dangerous. Points from Bill Cooper and LeighDesmond restored the half time deficit and soon Youghal led by 5and looked home and dry with 10 minutes to go. Mallow seemedto get a second wind aproaching the final whistle and when a mag-nificent save by Richie Cunningham wasn’t cleared and Mallowgoaled it was game on again and scores were level at 1-12 to 2-9.Mallow went a point up almost straight from the restart and lookedall over the winners until Leigh Desmond was fouled and pointedthe resulting free. The assembled crowd expected the final whistleand were already thinking about the replay when James O’Mahonycaught a great ball in the corner and centred for Desmond who wasfouled and again he pointed the free to give Youghal a hard earnedvictory. Mallow had a chance to draw level but the attempt fellshort into the grateful hand of Richie Cunningham and from theclearence the final whistle blew. U21 FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP EAST CORK FINALYOUGHAL 2-6 V GLANMIRE 2-13A bridge too far for Youghals young guns as they came up againsta team that had no player under the age of 19 in their side asopposed to Youghal playing what is in effect a Minor team plus 4players up to the age. No excuses however as Glanmire were aclass above and dominated in most areas of the field in the open-ing half but never opened a gap that they could have been com-fortable with. Youghal were happy enough to go in trailing by just4 points at the break on a score line of 0-7 to 0-4. Youghals causehowever wasn’t helped when Conor O’Sullivan limped off justbefore the break but the incoming Paul Quill did well around themiddle and disrupted a lot of play. Youghal started well in the sec-ond half and when Stephen Kelly goaled after 5 minutes the scoreswere level. We never seemed to drive on from this and were veryweasteful in possesion giving away some vital ball under no realpressure which knocked the stuffing out of the lads. A very poordecision by the referee in the Glanmire penalty area saw thembreak quickly and goal at the other end. Youghal rallied again andJames O’Mahony pulled it back to 4 points again with a great goaland shortly after we were unlucky not to have got a penalty with10 minutes left. Glanmire overpowered Youghal in the last 10minutes which was no surprise after the huge effort the lads put in

scoring 1-2 to see them run out winners, but they knew they wereafter a very good test.

Youghal United U10’s at Clashmore TournamentReport by John ConnellyYoughal United brought a strong squad of fourteen players to theirfirst competitive fixture of the year. The team held their ownagainst an experienced Clashmore side in the first match, whichended in a 2-0 defeat. The Youghal boys were determined to comehome with a win, and managed a gutsy 1-0 victory against ValleyRangers, with Sean Smiddy providing the winning goal. The final match of the group stage against Ardmore was a tightgame, with Ardmore running out 1-0 winners. That meantArdmore progressed to the cup semi-final whilst Youghal enteredthe semi-final of the shield. Youghal built up a 2-0 lead againstClashmore’s second team before losing 3-2. Leo Nunn and AdamBullman were the Youghal goal scorers.A big thanks to those parents who assisted with lifts on the day,and despite a disappointing finish the day was enjoyed by all.Squad: Kevin Anderson, Fionn Cliffe, Jordan Yellop, ZacDowning, Tony Flavin, Adam Bullman, Leo Nunn, CalumColeman, Sean Smiddy, Eoin Connelly, Sean O’Brien, LiamForrest, Conor KennedyYoughal United U8’s at Clashmore TournamentReport by Tommy KenefickYoughal United found themselves in an evenly matched groupwith Ballybridge of Cappoquin and Dungarvan United. With goal-keeper Andrew Foley in top form, and with the defence made upof the outstanding Ruairi McMahon, Mikey Lyons , James Lane,Jack Kenneally and Shane Geary, Youghal never looked like con-ceding a goal in either of their matches. The fact that the only goal conceded by Youghal in the two gamescame from a deflected shot against a very strong Dungarvan sidewas a great credit to the Youghal outfit. With Adam Hennessymarshalling midfield superbly, and both Keith O’Connor, JamesVarney and Christian Persaud working tirelessly and skillfully inboth midfield and attack, Youghal threatened to score on numer-ous occasions, only to come up against some resolute defendingand excellent goalkeeping from Dungarvan and Ballybridge. Aftertwo matches played, both Youghal and Ballybridge were tied onpoints, requiring the most dramatic of penalty shoot-outs to breakthe deadlock. Both goalkeepers kept up their magnificent form to keep outpenalty after penalty, all of which were well struck and on target.A fantastic penalty from the ice-cool James Varney brought thepenalty shoot-out to sudden death.Andrew Foley brought off the save of the tournament to prolongthe shoot-out, until finally Ballybridge prevailed to go through tothe semi-final. The lads did themselves and their club proud intheir first-ever tournament, and will have greater days ahead.Squad: Andrew Foley, Ruairi McMahon, Mikey Lyons, JamesLane, James Varney, Shane Geary, Jack Kennaelly, ChristianPersaud, Aoife Geary, Keith O’Connor (Vice Captain), AdamHennessy (Captain). Youghal United U7’s at Clashmore TournamentReport by T. KennedyAfter a late withdrawal from the tournament by another club,Youghal United were asked if they would split their U7 side intotwo teams to balance out the group.Youghal obliged, and their twoU7 sides played their way into an all-Youghal final.Emmett Perry’s U7’s cruised through the group stage with threeimpressive victories, beating Cappoquin FC 5-0, Youghal’s otherU7’s 2-0, and Clashmore 2-0. T. Kennedy’s Youghal U7’s had atougher road to the final, first losing to Clashmore 2-0 andYoughal 2-0, before getting on track with a 5-1 win overCappoquin. With a semi-final date with Clashmore looming, theYoughal boys dug deep, and came away with a stunning 3-0 vic-tory. The Youghal vs Youghal final was a hotly contested affair, filled with crunching tackles, silky smooth passing, and blisteringshots on goal. The final score was Youghal 2 - 1 Youghal, with

South Munster Under 18 Development League Final

Youghal 18 Fermoy 10 By Derek KielyThis final originally set for last Saturday was postponed due to awaterlogged pitch, but the surface at Towns Park was perfect forthis memorable final.Youghal who had already secured the Under18 Cup were favourites going into this match, especially when theSeasiders had already dealt Fermoy two heavy defeats earlier inthe season, but this game was a very different affair with littlebetween the two sides until the final ten minutes.Youghal had the early advantage and on the ninth minute thebreakthrough came with a well worked move out to the right wingfinished with a great offload from David Hyde to Niall Clohessywho touched down for the matches opening try.Fermoy’s response was impressive, good pressure inside theYoughal half continued for the next ten minutes and eventuallyfrom a quick ball ruck Fermoy’s number eight Lewis Mitchelldived over, under the posts for the equalizing try. Tom McAuliffeconverted and Fermoy had the two point advantage. Fermoy start-ed the brighter ii the second half and good pressure forced apenealty on the Youghal 22. McAuliffe converted and Fermoywere five points clear. The game developed into a forwards battle, where Youghal’s Daryll Ryan and Cian Kenneally were impressivein overturning a lot of ball. An inspired tactical change was madeby Youghal on the 55th minute when Greg Jaywardene was movedoff the wing and into scrum half. Immediately Youghal seemed toget quicker ball and after a move involving six phases, Clohessywas in again with a blistering run, touching down in the corner. With the sides level Youghal seemed to have massive momentumand a penealty success from Outhalf Alan Frahill O’Connor firedYoughal back into the lead. Jaywardene finished the match off instyle with a try on the 70th minute, cutting in on the blind side andstarted the celebrations for the Youghal under 18’s who completedan impressive South Munster Developement Cup and League dou-ble. Novice Cup Final Last Thursday, 7th May was competition nightin the alley again. After a schedule of 18 matches to get to the finalwe were finally ready to have the final of the inaugural Novice Cup.In the earlier stages we had the Winter Plate Finalists BrendanMackey and Michael Pearce knocked out, we had Jody Cooper loseout narrowly in the quarter final. We had SiobhÆn Downing upsetmany of the men by knocking them out only to lose in the semifinal. We also had Michael John Curley exit at semi final stage.Competing for the final were Barry Goggin and Colin Kennedy. Both players have a very different style of play. Barry plays a veryfast paced, hard hitting game, whereas Colin likes to play lots ofdrop shots and z-balls into the front corners. It was going to beinteresting to see how each would cope. The first game went pointfor point most way through as the players settled into their match. At 9-9 the game could have swung either way. It was Barry that gotthe next few points and ended up taking the first on a 15-10 score.Barry started the second game strong and notched up a couple ofearly scores that had Colin playing catch up. It was a lead thatColin was not making roads into and through strong serving andsecond shot combinations Barry took the second and won to takethe honors and win the competition. The club would like to con-gratulate all 20 players on making the competition very enjoyable. We would also like to thank the players whom assisted with the ref-ereeing over the weeks. Finally, we would also like to thank allthose that came up to watch and support their friends on the nightsand contribute to the great atmosphere.Open Cup No sooner has the Novice Cup finished and we havekicked off the Open Cup. In this competition we have 21 playersbattle out 20 matches to be crowned Open Champion for the nexttwelve months. The first round of matches saw Brendan Mackeybeat Kevin Landers on 2-0 scoreline. Next up Jody Cooper endedKeith Walshs interest with a 2-0 win also. Last match of the nighthad Olan McCarthy book his place in the next round after seeing offJason Browne. Next Thursday 14th May we have matches as fol-lows:14-May-09 7.00pm Barry Goggin vs. Michael John Curley;8.15pm Brendan Mackey vs. Michael Pearce; 9.00pm BrianFitzgerald vs. Killian McCarthySpring Ladder The Spring Ladder is well underway with playerslike Keith Gallogley & Barry Goggin making significant progressand making their way into the top 10 on the ladder. WayneFitzgerald still holds the number 1 slot, however we will have tokeep our eye on this as he has challenges from Dwaine OShea andAndrew Gallogley to be played in the coming week. MichaelPearce, Liam Joyce, Brian Fitzgerald, Brendan Mackey and JodyCooper are all in the top 10 also and are battling it out weekly toimprove/maintain their rankings. There are still about 6 weeks tobe played in the ladder so there is still plenty of time for movement!Youths Training Training continues on a Saturday between 1.30pmand 4.30pm. Youghal children help toraise 245 at Aura in

Special Olympics Irelandfundraising drive

Children from all over Youghal have a lot to be proud of this weekafter it was revealed that they helped to raise 245 over the courseof Aura Youghal Leisure Centres day-long fundraising drive forSpecial Olympics Ireland on Friday, April 24th.They were joined by families and friends who all took time out oftheir busy schedules to cheer on the young boys and girls and toparticipate in a number of fundraising activities themselves. The money that the children raised and the contribution that theyput in on the day is testament to their generosity and hard work, and to the goodwill of the people of the town towards SpecialOlympics Ireland, said Tracy Kenneally, Operations Manager atAura Youghal.Whether they gave us an hour of their time, or just 10 minutes, every child made a difference. We decided that a swimathon wasthe best way to raise money as they gave everyone a chance towatch and take part, whatever their age or fitness level. The swimathon took place right throughout the day, so familieswere able to drop in at any time, whether it was before work, inthe evening time, or even during their lunch break, added Tracy. Our young members of Aura Swim Academy made a great con-tribution by swimming lengths of the pool from morning throughto evening and they were supported and encouraged by Auramembers, Pay As You Go customers, staff and members of thepublic.Aura was one of 24 companies in Ireland who organised day-longfundraising activities as part of the Special Olympics Ireland All-Ireland Collection Day. In total, the Aura group, which operates 10health and leisure centres right across the country, raised a grandtotal of 14,000 for Special Olympics Ireland on the day.All monies raised will go towards providing sports training andcompetition for Special Olympics athletes and towards reachingout to those people not already involved in the organisation. It willalso be used to recruit and train volunteers to assist the athletes andto develop new clubs.

Model T Rally YoughalSunday 10th May 2009 was the date for the fourth rally to be heldin Youghal of the Model T Association. Ardsallagh Lodge GuestHouse, Youghal, was the venue for The Blackwater River Run.Tim Crowley of Crowley Engineering, Upper Glanmire Bridge,Cork, was the host for this yearly event. Fourteen vintage carsarrived with their owners and guests from America and Australia, having admired the beautiful views from Ardsallagh Lodge, thecavalcade left for their first stop Ballynatray House. John Dawsontook the group on a tour of the estate; with the warm weather thepheasants and guinea fowl took the opportunity to meander alongthe drives totally undisturbed by the vehicles. Taking the scenicdrive to Lismore the motorcade arrived at the Farmers Market,Michael Walsh informed the group how and why the market hadbeen setup it provided and excellent opportunity to purchaseplants, paintings and delicious home-made cakes. BallyrafterHouse, Lismore provided a tasty lunch and a chance to catch up onnews and events. Then on to the magnificent Lismore Castle set upoverlooking The Blackwater River. The entire group wereenthralled by the private tour of the Castle, its history, the anec-dotes of its guests and the beautiful gardens. With cameras flash-ing and the videos running not to mention the views from all win-dows it proved difficult to get the party on the road to the last stopof the day, Salterbridge House. Emma and her team providedafternoon tea for all forty-three guests and yet another delightfulgarden. After leaving Salterbridge the group headed back toYoughal by way of Cappoquinn, Dromana Drive, Villerstown, andClashmore. The drive was 42 miles with many hills for theseantique cars to master only one vehicle failed to make it roundPeter Merrigan of Triace provided a breakdown service. The asso-ciation would like to extend their sincere thanks to all those whoassisted to provide such a super day, Henry Gwyn-Jones and histeam at Ballynatray, The Duke and Duchess of Devonshire andtheir staff, Philip Wingfield, Joe and Noreen Willoughby, TimAllen and the local Garda.
