From the Organ Bench
From the Organ Bench: History of Catholic Hymn Singing in a Nutshell, 2 of 4 ar!cles
A#er persecu!on of Chris!ans faded 4th
– 5th
centuries, the Church grew fast. In!mate se$ngs in houses were no
longer adequate mee!ng places for Chris!ans. Large buildings were constructed in which hundreds and some!mes a
thousand or more people would meet and sing their hymns, their praises to God. However, these hymns had not yet
evolved into four-part harmony with text wri%en in a poe!cal metre. Organs in churches do not appear un!l around
the 10th
century. Music, whether secular or Chris!an, during the period of the early Church, was in its infancy. Singing
was in unison and would stay this way through the so-called Dark Ages, roughly 5th
–10th
centuries. This unison, free-
flowing singing in the Church came to be called chant.
Chant, plainchant, La!n, Gregorian, Ambrosian, Gallican chant et al. comprise a specific genre of earlier Church music
characterized most o#en by the itera!ve speaking or singing of words or sounds, o#en primarily on one or two main
pitches called reci!ng tones. Only recently, have some a%empted to define chant to mean any song/hymn one finds
in a missale%e. This defini!on of chant sweeps away hundreds of years of music history and arbitrarily creates a new
defini!on that is out of order.
When Church documents refer to chant as being that which “uniquely belongs to the Roman Church,” it is meant that
unison chant/song in the style of that which was collected and codified 9th
-10th
centuries. Taste and See or O Come
All Ye Faithful fall into the realm of song and four-part hymnody, respec!vely.
