Working with the Word Seventh Sunday of Easter May 13, 2018

Reading I: Acts 1:1-11

Responsorial Psalm: 47:2-3, 6-7, 8-9 Reading II: Ephesians 1:17-23 or 4:1-13

Gospel: Mark 16:15-20

Focusing the Gospel

Key words and phrases: proclaim the gospel, signs, those who believe

To the point: Before he ascended to take “ his seat at the right hand of God,” Jesus entrusted his saving mission to “preach the gospel” to the disciples. When the gospel is effectively preached by “those who believe,” it is accompanied by signs. What signs accompany believers today?

Connecting the Gospel

...to the Second Reading: This reading explicitly spells out the virtues necessary for one to "preach the gospel" effectively: humility, gentleness, patience, love. It also shows us the signs in the community of effective preaching: unity, peace, building up the Body of Christ, knowledge.

to experience: Normally when someone leaves us, we experience a profound sense of absence. In the ascension Jesus leaves but actually remains present within us as we take up his mission to preach the gospel.

This year the annual celebration of Mother's Day occurs on the Seventh Sunday of Easter. What a wonderful day to celebrate those women in our lives who cooperated with God to create new life and those in our lives who have nurtured our lives with love and compas-

sion. Yes, we believe that when we are open to children we have cooperated with God in creation. In addition, those women who have said yes should be recognized. The “Book of Blessings” has a profound blessing of mothers that recog-nizes that all blessings come from God. The most recognized date for the first Mother's Day in our country was in 1908. It was created by Anna Jaris. She worked tirelessly to make this day a national day in the Unit-ed States. She even incorporated herself as "Mother's Day International Association" and worked for the rest of her life against the commercialism that had taken over her com-memorative day. There are many instances of marking cer-tain days for mothers in world history. However, for us it has deeper meaning because it falls during the Marian month of May. We hold our earthly mothers in high esteem and hold our heavenly mother, the Virgin Mary, in high esteem also. This Mother's Day take some real time and thank your Mom with more than just a box of candy; and if she is not living pray to her and for her.

Seventh Sunday of Easter For the last three Sundays, we have been hearing Jesus' farewell discourse before he ascends into heaven. This Sun-day, Jesus concludes with a conversation with the Father where he petitions on behalf of his followers. In his words, Jesus' love for his disciples, then as well as now, shines forth. There is a sense that now we are all truly one with him. We are consecrated in truth, as he is consecrated as the truth. As our Easter draws to a close, it is good to reflect on how we represent Jesus Christ to the world. We are truly the body of Christ, the presence of Christ in a world that often-times does not know him. Can the world recognize him in us? Since we are protected and consecrated in truth, do we venture out boldly into a hostile world bringing real peace? Do we testify to the reality of the risen Lord each day, or do we treat that reality like another story, which we recall fond-ly? The season of Easter may be concluding next week at Pentecost, but we are to be Easter people all year through. May the risen Lord be with us as we seek to share the good news in our daily lives with all those we meet.
