AUGUST 11, 2019 NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
HAPPY FEAST OF ST. CLARE!
Among the most important figures in developing the Franciscan charism
was St. Clare of Assisi. Born to a noble family in
1194, Clare grew up with great wealth. At the age of
18, she heard St. Francis preaching during Lent and
decided to leave her home for a life of poverty and
prayer, just as the brothers lived. Her family did not
approve, however, and so Clare escaped from her
father’s home one night, was met on the road by friars
carrying torches, and in the poor little chapel called
the Portiuncula received a rough woolen habit in the
poor little chapel called the Portinuncula.
For the rest of her life, she lived very simply. Together
with other companions, “The Poor Ladies,” as they were called, went
barefoot, slept on the ground, ate no meat, and observed almost complete
silence. She served the sick and washed the feet of the begging nuns.
Although influenced early in her life by the Franciscans, she also
contributed much of her own spirituality, and helped to shape the
spiritual life of the brothers around her. In her letters, she is famous for
developing a fourfold process of prayer: Gaze, Consider,
Contemplate, & Imitate.
RIVER CLEAN UP PROJECT A SUCCESS
Thank you to everyone who donated or sorted hygiene supplies, prepared
lunches or helped at the clean-up! Seminarians and our volunteers worked
hard cleaning the river and distributing lunches and hygiene bags to the
homeless along the river. All of the efforts were greatly appreciated.
