STEM-CHANGING VERBS This week we’re going to learn about our final kind of verbs. They are called STEM CHANGERS. These verbs have a special spelling change in them. You have used some of these verbs since the first 9 weeks. Look at the sentences below & see if they look correct.

El chico tene dos gatos. (The boy has 2 cats)

Ruby quere un millón de dólares. (Ruby wants a million dollars)

Mi mamá pode comer diez hamburguesas. (My mom can eat 10 hamburgers)

NO WAY! THESE LOOK WEIRD! Look at the correct versions now and you’ll see that these verbs need a spelling change!

READ THE DIRECTIONS FOR CONJUGATING THESE VERBS BELOW CAREFULLY AND DO THE PRACTICE ACTIVITIES. There are different categories of stem-changing verbs based on what kind of spelling change they have. What is a stem?

• The stem = what is left when the –ar, -er, or –ir is taken off. o Example: The stem of hablar is habl o Example: The stem of comer is com o Example: The stem of escribir is escrib

Here’s how to conjugate eàie stem-changers:

• Step 1. Take off the –ar, -er, -ir ending • Step 2. Change the “e” in the stem to “ie” in all forms except nosotros and vosotros (change

inside “boot” only) • Step 3. Add the regular –ar,-er, or –ir ending.

o In verbs that have more than one “e” in the stem, change the last “e” to “ie” • Nosotros and vosotros forms are just regular conjugations.
