Music students make a presentation to pianist Sam Rotman with music teacher A.Fitzgerald, Principal Seamus O’Ceallachain, Fr.Patrick Relihan and Mervyn Scott,Youghal Baptist Church

Concert RecitalOn April 15th, students and staff of Pobalscoil na Tronide weretreated to a wonderful recital from the acclaimed concert pianistMr Sam Rotman. From Phoenix, Arizona, Mr Rotman is a graduate of the Juillard

School of Music, New York and has been the recipient of manyawards throughout the United States and Europe, including thatof ’Laureate Winner’ at the 4th International BeethovenCompetition in Vienna. Having performed in over 56 countriesthroughout the world and totalling over 1800 recitals, MrRotman’s repertoire includes the great works of Beethoven,Debussy, Chopin and Scarlatti to name but a few. Favourablereviews follow his performances always, not merely for his vir-tuosic brilliance but also for a style of delivery that is both per-sonable and unique. During both recitals in Pobalscoil naTronide, Mr Rotman held his audience captive and spellbound, his carefully chosen repertoire was especially suited to a youngaudience with each work being preceded by a brief narrative.Pieces such as Chopin’s ’Polonaise in C minor’, Debussy’s ’TheSunken Cathederal’ and Beethoven’s ’Turkish March’ from Op. 76were so wonderfully animated that a lasting impression was madeon this young audience. Mr Rotman’s performance was bothsuperlative and sparkling, never allowing his audience becomedisengaged. The pleasure he derives from his playing radiatedthroughout the room, creating an atmosphere of calm andintrigue. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Rotmanmost sincerely for taking time out from an otherwise hecticschedule to perform for our students, a sincere thank-you also toMeryvn Scott and Father Patrick Relihan who secured MrRotman’s appearance and co-ordinated the event for our fortu-itous students.

COUNTY COUNCILUPDATES

A new advertising campaigne will commence in June to advertisethe afffordable housing that will be coming on stream in the coun-ty. The system has been changed to allow applicants to choosefrom a defined area, which will include a number of areas thathave available affordable housing, a good example would be thatYoughal would be area 11 and would also include places likeKilleagh, Castlemartyr, Mogeely etc so these options may beexplored by the applicants if their first choice is not available.Intending applicants should also check with their mortgageprovider as to how much they can be sanctioned for a mortgage.Recreation and Amenity grant forms are now available, advertswill appear in local papers. Closing date for receipt of applica-tions is as follows: Community Grant scheme - Nov 28th 2008,Recreation Grant Scheme - 26th May 2008, Amenity GrantScheme - 26th Sept., 2008.Southern Division meeting was held on April 21st where Cllr.Barbara Murray posed the question of Cork County Council pro-viding a glass recycling facility for their customers, the responsewas favourable in that at present the council are looking at the pro-vision of this service. Will update when there is progress on this.Unfortunately due to the abuse of the McCurtainstown carparkrecycling facilities these have now been discontinued. In order tomeet criteria for blue flag beach these facilities will be providedcomplete with CCTV at the area near the Railway Station fromJune to Sept. Cllr Murray brought a motion forward at the lastmeeting of Youghal Town Council, calling on the council to allowthese facilities to be made permanent subject to there being nomisuse of the facility. The response from management was not infavour of making recycling facility permanent at that time, but thisissue will be pursued again once facility is up and running.Struhan na Sali - Works to improve the gradient of the green areawill commence next week. Trial holes were dug in the last fewweeks in grass area to determine what was under the surface, for-tunately the ground is workable and our engineer has suggestedthat a tiered green area would work pretty well. The intentionwould be to widen the road and provide approx 8 more carparkingspaces.Litter Picking on N25 is posing problems and is proving to be acostly operation for Cork County Council. The funding that isprovided to date by the NRA is unlikely to cover the costs that willnow be incurred by CCC to meet the new traffic managementguidelines. Apparently one of the carriageways should be closedin order to do works on N25. Early next month the 1st visit to theN25 will cover picking of litter and grass cutting. The 2nd visitwill be to spray for ragworth, this should be done more than oncein the year, but at present once is all that funding will provide for.On Friday 18th April Cork County Council launched this years lit-ter challenge, judging will commence on April 24th so all Tidytowns groups and community councils are already active in mak-ing sure that their area is looking its best, with the support of eachlocal authority.Youghal Landfill Site, problems are still ongoing in relation tofoul odour coming from the landfill. It would seem that quite afew additional measures have being taken to alleviate the smelland to date we still have a problem. At the Southern Committeemeeting this issue was again aired and it was outlined that consult-ants have been appointed to advise on new stratagy in gas manage-ment system. By August of ’08 it is quite possible that CorkCounty Council will only be taking their own waste and that otheroperators will have to find an alternative landfill site in which todispose of their refuse. Bottle Hill will have to have an improvedaccess before it becomes operational, and all waste must be treat-ed and baled to be accepted, as such at the moment there is noprogress in terms of an MRF plant which will have to be in placebefore Bottle Hill becomes operational.Provision of Additional Carparking at Kilcoran Place, JackMcCarthy, senior engineer has applied for funding for the provi-sion of parking and overlay from Development Contribution

scheme 2008. Claycastle Car Park, new litter bins will be provided in addition toDog Poop bins for this area.Redbarn Car parking facilities, Cork County Council will use ownlands to provide parking in Redbarn for Summer season. Parkingover the years has been a huge problem in this area and there hasalways being the fear that should an emergency service need to getto Redbarn it would be with great difficulty.Initially these parking facilities will be temporary in terms of sur-facing and marking out. The existing toilet facility while not total-ly satisfactory in terms of where it is located, will be improved andby 2009 will be relocated and replaced with a modern facility. Theintention from the onset was to provide parking for the hundredsof people that visit Redbarn when weather is fine and by doing thiswe would also be meeting part of the criteria for Blue Flag, thewater quality has always been good so hopefully by 2009 Redbarnshould be well on the way to achieveing Blue Flag status.

WEST WATERFORD NEWSWhen dreams come crashing down! When John Cashman and his wife Margaret - a stroke victim, soldup their house and farm in the quite secluded area of Monatrea infavour of their present home located on the N25 in Summerhill, which is close to all amenities public transport and is more acces-sible for Margaret- it was the home of their dreams. However within a short time their dreams came crashing downaround them and so began a five-year nightmare. While we are allaware it takes more than one swallow to make a summer, butwhen six accidents occur in within a one hundred yard stretch ofroad and four of those come crashing through your propriety com-ing within inches of hitting your home, and the most recent twooccurred within the last two months its time to panic.Following each accident John contacted the local authoritiesrequesting some action be taken to protect his home and each timehis pleas fell on deaf ears. However in February when a Jeep camecrashing through the boundary wall between him and his neigh-bour, John knows it was only a matter of time before a majorcatastrophe occurs and fearing for his life and that of his wife heupped his campaign. He spoke to the media, he lobbied local pub-lic representatives for help only to be told in a letter from thecouncil dated April 1st that "It is not normal practice to erect safe-ty barriers for individual properties" and instead was promised astatutory "Dangerous Bend Ahead" advance warning sign. "Thishas to be joke," says John "traffic is coming down that hill too fastto even see such a sign let alone read it!"Then on Tuesday afternoon April 8th the worst incident to dateoccurred when a Mercedes car came crashing through the frontwall which separates Johns house from the N25, thankfully a tele-graph pole brought the car to a halt just feet away from John’s bed-room wall. Guttering, fascia and down pipes were broken anddamaged, paint was chipped from the wall and rubble was castover a wide area. "It’s a miracle nobody was killed," says John, ashe sets about cleaning up sorry mess around his front door onceagain.John is only too well aware he might not be so lucky next timemeanwhile he continues live in fear every time he hears a bigtruck coming close to the house. Once again John is appealing theto the council to bring this nightmare to an end by simply erectingsafety barriers outside his home

A meeting by the contractor with local residents will be held priorto work commencing with the latest Heritage Regeneration ofChurch St/Emmet Place. One week ahead of work commencing Youghal Local Radio, thelocal Fire Brigade, Ambulance Service, Doctors and Manager ofShalom House, Refuse Collectors, and Suppliers of Fuels (coaland Oil) etc., will be informed that the street will be closed, at thejunction with North Main St., and will be updated on an ongoingbasis. Excavating will commence at the junction of Church St.North Main St. and connections will be carried out at this location,to ensure that levels are correct.A road crossing will be excavated for connections to existing serv-ices on the east side of North Main St. Work will then continue upalong Church St. and reinstatement with wet mix will be in placefor a period of weeks, for compaction, and to allow the paving tobe carried out up to the front of Shalom House. When work has been carried out past Shalom House, access toservices and egress will be changed from Emmet Place to NorthMain St., and that Emmet Place/Church St. junction will beclosed, to continue the upgrading along there.Pedestrian access will be maintained by means of a temporaryfootbridge, past the excavations for local residents only. People

with disabilities with receive special assistance during theseworks. The work will be fenced at all times with barriers, cones and warn-ing tape, and every effort will be made to keep the area safe forresidentsExperienced staff will operate all machinery on site. Noise anddust levels will be kept to a minimum, and where possible all cut-ting and grinding of materials will be carried out off site.Disruption of water supply will be kept to a minimum. While no definite time scale can be given, due to the nature of thework, it is hoped that it should be completed within six months .

Traffic Plan during Works at Church St/Emmett Place

It is proposed that Church St. will be closed during the entire dura-tion of the work.Work will commence at the junction of North Main St and ChurchSt. Access to Shalom House will be via Emmett Place/Church St.While work is continuing towards St. Mary’s Terrace, advancewarning signs will be erected on North Main St, and on Ashe

Street, at convenient locations, to warnmotorists/pedestrians, that a section of Church St.will be closed. This is marked with X on attachedmap.A turntable will be maintained at the junction ofEmmett St./Church St. to enable vehicles to turnback along Emmett St.Parking will be prohibited at this junction duringthe works. Marked as a black circle O on the map.Traffic will be reduced to one lane on North MainSt. on the west side of its junction with Church St.,for most of the works, for safety of pedestrians andworks, to allow safe access and egress from ChurchSt. Parking along De Velera St. during the works willbe prohibited, as it will be the main route for theaccess to Emmett St/Church St. by constructionvehicles and local traffic. It would be hoped that only local residents wouldbe the only pedestrians in the vicinity of the roadworks, at all times to avoid injury and delays to thework schedule. When construction work is completed past St.Mary’s Terrace, access over the new limestone sur-face will be maintained to Shalom House, and tothe east side of Church St.Signs, to advise people of this change of situation, will be erected.Prior to the works, during the works, and at anystage if something unplanned for occurs, the fol-lowing services will be notified of the situationregarding access- the Local Radio, Ambulance,Fire service, County Council Staff, Refuse collec-tion service, Taxi service, Doctor’s surgery, and car-ers of persons resident on the street.Any advice or help in these matters will be wel-come, in order to allow work to proceed quicklyand safely.

DELIGHT AND DEFEATFOR BRENDAN COONEYIN EUROPEAN MASTERS

By Christy ParkerYoughal snooker player Brendan Cooney has mixed feelings onhis return from the European Snooker championships in Glasgow. The veteran international reached the Master’s Over-40 final asone half of Ireland’s Master’s Over-40 side. His partner wasWexford’s Joe Delaney. Between group games and knock-outs, the duo played contestedeight matches, meeting Wales, Iceland, Northern Ireland, Maltaand two Scotland sides, whom they played in the quarter andsemi-finals also. Then came Wales in the final. "They had two ex-pro’s, DarrenMorgan and Phil Williams, representing them," recalls Brendan."Morgan was a former World No.5 and only resigned his pro tick-et last year, before joining the over-40 amateur circuit. Other ex-pros are coming on the circuit nowadays," he adds. The Welsh boyos had scarcely dropped a frame throughout and"fairly obliterated the Irish lads, 8-0. "Other than that, it was avery enjoyable weekend," says a rueful Brendan, who shared arunners-up prize of a trophy and £195. It is difficult to understand why ex-pros would wish to render thecompetition almost uncompetitive, given the almost tokenrewards and the requirement to play one’s own expenses. Brendan, who earned his 55th Irish cap in the final, may inadver-tently have hit on the correct clue in the cue. "It was important toplay for your country and to get to a European Final, win, lose ordraw," he says categorically.

FRENCH WHALE OF AVISIT TO YOUGHAL

By Christy Parker Youghal’s evolution towards a centre of nautical activity andexcellence was much in evidence last week when a French dele-gation undertook a low profile visit. The dozen or so visitorsincluded camera crews and travel writers from La Rochelle, arenowned boating resort on France’s west coast. More specifical-ly, they represented the organising committee of La Rochelle’sglobally-recognised and highly prestigious annual boat show. Amongst the reception committee from the local side was Townand Cork County Councillor Barbara Murray, who revealed thevisit’s purpose and origins, not to mention potential. ’TraditionallyLa Rochelle invites one country as its annual boat show guest butthis year, for some reason, Cork County Council managed toacquire the invite for itself! This means it will have 7,000sq ft atthe boats show in September, in which to showcase the county’smaritime wares and services. I, in turn, managed to secure a spotfor Youghal within that space, " she concludes honestly, if honest-ly Last week’s two-hour visit was part of a research/familiarisationfor the French. Having specified a particular interest in Youghal’slink to Moby Dick, they were fairly rapt when Kevin Linehan pro-vided early morning beverages in the pub of the same name. Thatwas a mere fit of the giggles compared to their unbridled joy whenMichael Hackett arrived. No French romanticist -of which there are many- could haveenvisaged meeting a man who could recall the making of themovie’s opening scenes and who had subsequently wrote a bookon it. "They were blown away by Michael. They invited him overfor September," says Barbara. Others amongst the welcoming committee were Jean FrancoisBernard and wife Mary of le Gourmet and keen boating fans, seaangling promoter Martin Colfur. Aquatrek representatives puttheir craft on display and Gavin Tivey detailed his wreck divingand deep sea fishing enterprises. All can expect representation at September’s French showcase. Aswill representatives of the anticipated P1 Thundercat powerboatracing spectacular who also attended last week. The visitors, en route to Cork, Cobh, Kinsale and other minorboating spots, were detoured to the beach, the better to appreciatethe setting for the racing. That, as well as much else, left them"highly complimentary" of their short stay amongst us, even ifvery few of us knew they were there.

YOUGHAL TOWN COUN-CIL APRIL MEETING

Michael Beecher - Cork County Council items.During last week’s monthly town council meeting, Cllr. MichaelBeecher raised several issues and presented them to the CountyManager. Primary amongst these was the Cllr’s concerns over thecontinuing dumping of domestic rubbish. He stated. "The litterlouts dumping domestic rubbish down the bog road must be madean example of." he added that the entrance below the railwaycrossing was the most affected area. "Another area is the NewLine. Some people are throwing domestic rubbish from their carsinto front gardens. Homeowners are very upset," he continued, before asking that the County Litter Warden patrol the areas. TheCllr. also joined in the chorus of disapproval over the ongoingodour problems at the Civic Amenity Site. On other matters, theCllr. called for the completion of the footpath at Aura LeisureCentre, an update as to when the proposed car park will com-mence at Sarsfield Tce. as well as the disabled space at RaheenPark and expressed the hope that the HSE would resume normalservice to the Chiropody and Diabetic clinics at the DistrictHospital, demanding that the HSE put it in writing to the Councilthat the change in operations ’is only temporary’.

WHOSE 1ST ANNIVERSARY OCCURS ON HE 25TH APRIL

Love you Frank xxx Marie

In loving memory of our dad andbest friend

Frank Whyte

Love your Daughter Lyndsay & son Neil

In loving memory of my brother Frankie Whyte

Your loving brother Jack and wife Lill

It does not take a special day.For me to think of you,

Each mass I hear each prayerI say is offered up for you

We cannot bring the old days backWhen we were all together

The family chain is broken nowBut memories will live forever

Your loving sister Martha and Family

They say there is a reason They say that time will healBut neither time or reason

Will change the way we feelFor no one knows the heartache

That lies behind our smiles,No one knows how many timesWe have broken down and criedWe want to tell you somethingSo there wont be any doubt

You’re so wonderful to think of But so hard to be without

We took our vows togetherSaid "Till dead do us part"

But when god came and took your handMy whole world fell apart.

No one knows the heartacheI try so hard to hide,

Only God know how many times I’ve broken down and cried.

When I look back upon our livesOne of the things that makes me glad,That you choose me to share with you

The precious years we had.

We lost a dad with a heart of goldHow much we miss him can never be told,

He shared our troubles and helped us along,If we follow his footsteps we will never go wrong,

We miss you from your fireside chair,Your loving smile and gentle air,

You’re vacant place no one can fill,We miss you dad and always will

He is a dad so very rare,Content in his home and always there,On earth he toiled, in heaven he rests

God bless you dad you are simply the best

In loving memory of a father and best friend

Frankie Whyte

Always loved and remembered by Your son Alan and Kim

We little knew that morning,God was going to call your name,

In life we loved you dearly, In death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, You did not go alone,

For part of us went with you. The day God called you home.

You left us beautiful memories, your love is still our guide. And although we cannot see you, You are always at our side.

Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same,But as God calls us one by one

The chain will link again.

Sadly missed by your brother Eugene Kathy & Family

We did not see you close your eyesWe did not see you die

All we knew was that you were gone.Without a last goodbye.

It was a sudden parting.Too bitter to forget,

Only those who loved you,Are the ones who will never forget,

The happy hours once enjoyed,How sweet their memory still,

But death has left a vacant place,This world can never fill,

Your life was one of the kindly deeds,A helping hand for others’ needs,

Sincere and true in heart and mind,Beautiful memories left behind.

I am not there, I do not sleep,I am a thousand winds that blow,I am the diamond glints on snow,I am the sunlight on ripped grain,

Of quiet birds in circled flight,I am the soft stars that shine at night

Do not stand at my grave and cry,I am not there, I did not die

ARDRATH PARK, YOUGHALJUNE 30TH - JULY 4TH

Last Saturday saw an exciting conclusion to the Cork MixedVolleyball League hosted by CIT Volleyball Club in Bishopstown.Nine teams had battled it out over the course of the league whichcommenced in January for league honours. Made in Europe fromWaterford, baring a huge upset, had secured the top position goinginto the last day of action. However second place was still to bedecided and many teams were hoping to improve their leagueposition with some strong performances on the final day of play. Bishopstown came into the final day in second position overallhowever they had some work to do to maintain this with Youghalhot on their heels and still in contention for a second placed finish-ing. One of the first matches of the day pitted Youghal againstBishopstown a must win game for both teams. Youghal made thebetter start taking the first set 25-18 and looked to have rattled theBishopstown side. Bishopstown dug deep in the second set andmatched Youghal point for point through the early stages of theset. More consistent play from Bishopstown was enough to seethem through the set and take it 25-21. Both teams had to be con-tent with sharing the points and had to await the outcome of latermatches to decide their final placing. Youghal’s next opponents were the Grasshoppers who went intothe day in 6th position overall. Youghal were comfortablefavourites going into this game however they weren’t going tohave it all their own way. Youghal won the first set 25-20 butdropped the second set 25-23 to Grasshoppers a crucial loss ofpoints that would turn out to deny them a chance of finishing insecond position. Youghal defeated CIT 2-0 however despite agood performance they had left it too late in their challenge forsecond place and finished the league in a very respectable 3rd anexcellent placing for their first year in the competition. Bishopstown’s remaining opponents of the day were UCC, wherethey recorded 2 sets to 0 win, and Made in Europe the all butcrowned league champions. This turned into an enthralling game.Bishopstown were the only team to take a set from the Waterfordteam throughout the league and certainly started the game intenton a victory. Some excellent blocking and defensive play byBishopstown secured them the first set on a very close score lineof 25-23. Made in Europe came out with all guns blazing in thesecond set. They upped the tempo and after some incredible serv-ing they began to pull away half way through the set to take thesecond set 25-17. Both teams shared the points and BishopstownI’m sure were delighted to take another set from Made in Europeand deny them a perfect record in the league. Lower down in the table the battle was on to secure more pointsand improve final league positions. Rebels had a good day record-ing straight set victories over UCC and VBAK. They put in a verysolid performance against Made in Europe however the Waterfordteam prevailed. Rebels finished the league in 5th place overall.League hosts CIT also finished strongly with wins over UCC andWaterford team Deise Tigers and took 4th place overall. VBAKlast years champions had strong opposition on their final day. They pushed Made in Europe all the way in their game and will behappy with their performance despite being on the wrong side ofthe 2- 0 score line in favour of Made in Europe. Their last game ofthe day was against Deise Tigers which was another exciting andclosely contested game. VBAK just had the edge and took the firstset 25-20 and the second 25-17 to finish in 7th place overall oneposition above the Deise Tigers who finished in 8th. Made in Europe are the new League Champions and deservingchampions too. They put in a near perfect performance throughoutthe competition dropping just two sets over the entire league torunners up Bishopstown. Congratulations to all the participatingteams who hugely contributed to the success of the league and pro-vided many entertaining and competitive matches throughout thecontest. We look forward to welcoming all these teams back nextseason and indeed some new contenders for the 08/09 mixedleague.

JUNIOR HURLING LEAGUE 18/04/2008YOUGHAL 0-13 V COSH 3-1Youghal opened with a strong breeze at their backs and complete-ly outplayed their visitors. Cobh made a game of it in the secondhalf having trailed by 0-12 to 1-0 at half time and but for the ref-eree blowing early because of fading light which was agreed byboth camps at half time might have sprung a surprise. Cobh havebeen going well of late and this added to the fact that this was afirst outing for the Juniors with no training session to date was avery good performance. Brett Moloney stamped his authority onthe game from the throw in and the strength of Cieron 0’ Mahonycaused dificulties. A big performance from Trevor Griffin at fullback and the consistent Martin 0’ Brien lending a hand gave Cobhfew chances with James O’Mahony causing havoc up front. Team:S. Spillane, B. O’Regan, 1. Griffin, Mike O’Brien, Martin O’Brien,C. Spillane, C. O’Laochdha, B. Moloney, C. O’Mahony, D. Coyne,Barry Ring, F. Griffin, J. O’Mahony, J. Wade, D. Hickey. Subs: K.Lonergan, M. Walsh, D. Savage, P. Mackey, S. Kelly.INTERMEDIATE HURLING CHALLENGE 27/04/2008YOUGHAL 0-10 V MALLOW 2-12A good outing a week before the first round of the championshipsaw Mallow travel to Copperalley. Youghal again lined out with-out several key players through injury and to their credit gave agood performance especially in the second half when the gamebecame more physical and the lads started to play like they werelooking for a starting place next week. The busy Bill Cooper wasimpressive and Richie Cunningham when moved to the HalfForward line looked more hungry. Alan Geary and AndrewMurphy were very solid at the back proving that experiencecounts for a lot in a tight battle, they gave little away. JamesO’Mahony was very busy in the corner and scored a brilliant pointfrom the sideline midway through the second half.John Parker gave his views on next weeks Championship openeragainst Argideen Rangers and said He is expecting a very toughgame in Pairc Ui Rinn. " We have a lot of players injured at themoment which has hampered our preperation although traininghas gone very well. We hope that Brendan Ring will have somepart to play next week and the return of Leigh Desmond of courseis a huge boost". John is delighted with the attitude shown by theplayers especially with so many new additions to the panel thisyear. "There are a lot of new faces around with a lot of Minorschallenging for a starting place which is keeping everyone on theirtoes and competition is keen". RUSSELL ROVERS 3-11 V YOUGHAL 1-6This was the first outing for the Hurlers and it showed as Rusellsdominated the first half with David Cashman in goal denyingthem on more than one occasion. Youghal seemed to settle in thesecond half and started to hurl well with some fine scores. A fewplayers missing on the night didn’t help and Youghal need to getthese players back for the remainder of the League. Team: D.Cashman, R. Lane, A. Curtin, L. McCarthy, D. Ryan, D. Power, L.Troy, R. Tobin, C. Sheehan, A. Daly, A. O’Keefe, E. Murphy, J.O’Leary, K. Coyne, C. Coyne, K. Daly.U16 HURLING LEAGUE YOUGHAL 1-8 V CLOYNE 1-3A much better performance this time round but still short a lot oflast years Championship winning side which is disapointing.Youghal battled well all over the field with Ryan Lane, Leo _yonsTroy, Ryan Lane and Andrew Curtin outstanding in defence andRyan Tobin scoring with ease from midfield. This was a good per-formance from a team that will improve with every game.Team: D. Ryan, D. Mulcahy, A. Curtin, L. L. Troy, B. Walsh, D.Power, R. Lane, R. Tobin, E. Dillon, J. O’Leary, A. ConorCoyne was again his magnificent self totally controling the mid-dle of the park. Killian Ansbro continues to catch the eye in hisdebut season improving with every game while another newcom-er to the game Jake Caliac looks impressive. U12 star OllieDempsey came on in the second half and seemed to enjoy thespace afforded by the bigger pitch scoring a nice point.Team: D. Mason, M. Coady, B. Mitchell, G. O’Regan, L.McCarthy, D. Malone.U12 FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPYOUGHAL V KILLEAGHYoughal made a real game of this for the first half with the scoreslevel at the break but Killeagh helped by a strong wind pulledaway with ease in the second half. Chris Morrisson had a fantas-tic game at full back with a Man of the match performance whileTommy Kennefick, Ollie Dempsey and Harry Oliphant alsochipped in with good performances.

Deepest sympathy is extended to the O’Sullivan family on theDeath of Pad 0’ Sullivan. Pad was a leading light in the Glory daysof Youghal Hurling and passed away after a lengthy illness. HisBrother Dan spoke with great passion, mixed with a little humourat the Funeral which left the congregation in no doubt that theWorld was a better place because of Pad.

SEAT’S STUNNING NEW IBIZABREAKS COVER

On the 2nd April, the covers come off the most important newmodel in Spanish car maker SEAT’s recent history with theunveiling of the all-new Ibiza five-door supermini. The newcomer’s dramatic debut, at the firm’s Martorell HQ nearBarcelona, marks the start of a major product offensive from theambitious Spanish brand which will, over the coming months, also see the debut of further Ibiza variants, as well as striking newsaloon and estate contenders in the upper medium segment.All-new from the wheels up, and designed to reinforce SEAT’sposition as a leader in the supermini sector, the bigger, better newIbiza five-door has a range of ’big car’ features to match its sharpstyling. The work of renowned ex-Lamborghini stylist LucDonckerwolke, the new car offers a variety of class-leadingoptions.Longer than the current model - the new Ibiza breasts thetape at 4.05 m, versus the existing car’s 3.97 m - it’s markedlymore capacious, too, with improved rear seat legroom and a sig-nificantly larger and more practical boot space which, at 292 litreswith rear seats in place, is comfortably the largest in the supermi-ni class.Sitting on a new version of the renowned Ibiza ’AgileChassis’, with wider front and rear tracks (30 mm and 33 mmrespectively) the new car looks and feels even more ’planted’, anddelivers both a composed ride and class-leading, sporty han-dling.SEAT’s success in offering sporty yet frugal diesel cars nat-urally means a raft of sophisticated direct-injection TDI Ibizafive-doors will debut in due course.Give it a few months to makeits way here to Ireland.

FORD TO GO BACK TO BASICSFord Motor Co founded by the son of an Irish immigrant to theUSA had a saying about the car he built: any colour as long as itsBlack. Well its seems Ford lost their way and were giving toomany options particularly in the USA the biggest car market in theworld. Allan Mulally (CEO FORD) said when I came over fromBoeing in 2006 "I was looking at the (Lincoln) Navigator con-sole," Mulally said. "We have 128 different options you couldchoose on the console. That’s just the console." So too manycolours and options meant the customer could rarely get the carthey wanted and had to wait. However they later found out 80%kind of went for much the sameoption, so the answer has cut downon choice, cut costs, and alongwith closing factories in Americaand selling the likes of Land Roverand Jaguar has almost broughtFord back into profit. Strangelyenough the exact same thing ishappening at Chrysler.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Alfa Mi.ToWith the imminent arrival of its new Mi.To, Alfa Romeo will soonbe offering a new generation of Alfa aficionados its most compactsporty car to date.A contemporary and innovative design, with a name redolent ofhistory, the choice of Mi.To has great evocative resonance for AlfaRomeo, since it was chosen as a sign of a deep-seated linkbetween the past and future of the brand: between Milan, the cityof design that brought the car’s style into being, and Turin, whichwill be responsible for its industrial production. This decisionhighlights the brand’s strong desire to consolidate its Milaneseroots. The Mi.To is the first new Alfa Romeo to be built since the 8CCompetizione, Alfa Romeo’s icon of style and technology, fromwhich it borrows certain characteristic traits: the particular shapeof the frameless side windows, the distinctive frontal treatment, the shape of the headlights and the LED tail lights. The headlightsand tail lights represent a distinctive personalised feature: the frontand rear lighting surrounds exhibit different forms of material pro-cessing and colours, which will allow customers to create an ultra-stylish ’eye-liner’ effect that underscores the car’s style andassertiveness. The highly ’personal’ dashboard and seats ensure that the interiorrepresents the ultimate expression of Italian style: welcoming yetsporty, with top-quality materials and close attention to detail; allwrapped in a compact and dynamic shape - Mi.To is 4.06 metreslong, 1.44 metres high and 1.72 metres wide.Performance and technology must always be top-of-the-range inan Alfa Romeo. As with all the brand’s models, the Mi.To is ableto appeal to the most demanding customers with its exciting drive-ability, a factor which is determined in part by Alfa’s new DNAsystem. This driver-operated system acts directly on the engine, brakes, steering, suspension and gearbox, allowing three differentvehicle behaviour modes based on the driving style best suited tothe situation or the customer’s wishes: sporting (Dynamic), towndriving (Normal), maximum safety even in difficult grip condi-tions (All-Weather). Mi.To is the first car in its segment to offersuch innovative technological content.Strong performance is guaranteed by a turbocharged range ofpetrol and diesel engines spanning 90-155bhp, with the range dueto be extended by higher powered versions.

FIAT AND THE NEW CO2 CAR TAXESEXPLAINED: IT’S ALL ABOUT WHAT

BAND YOU’RE IN!Goodbye C.C. Hello C02. That’s the message for everyone buying anew car from July 1 who wants the best value-for-money, greenestcar. On that day the old regime ends. Road tax will no longer be basedon an engine’s cubic capacity (c.c.), but on how much carbon dioxide(C02) it emits. Emissions will also affect the rates of VehicleRegistration Tax charged. The less C02, the lower your annual roadtax AND the lower the amount of Vehicle Registration Tax paid, andalso the less harm caused to our planet. From July 1st all new cars registered will be grouped in EmissionBands instead of by engine capacity. A car that emits up to 120 gramsof C02 per kilometre (such as a Fiat Panda 1.2 or a Grande Punto 1.3litre Multijet turbo diesel) will be in Band A. Owners of these carswill pay just 100 road tax each year. The VRT rate on many cars ofthis size can also be at the lowest rate of 14%, so the price of cars inBand A may fall by as much as 1,250.There will be seven Emission Bands: Band A is for cars producing up to 120 g/km, annual road tax 100 Band B covers 121g to 140g, annual road tax 150Band C covers 141g to 155g, annual road tax 290 Band D covers 156g to 170g, annual road tax 430 Band E covers 171g to 190g,annual road tax 600 Band F covers 191g to 225g, annual road tax 1,000 Band G covers 226g and over, annual road tax 2,000!Fiat Group Automobiles Ireland has welcomed these changes, because the new system will reduce C02 emissions and will reducethe cost of motoring for people who want to go ’green’. The majorityof cars Fiat sells fall into Bands A and b, the lowest cost bands. Thereare Fiat 500s, Pandas and Grande Punto in Band A, Bravos and Dobl7-seaters is in Band B, and by the time the new laws take effect, therewill also be a Bravo 1.6 in Band A. You’ll see how engine size is nowless important in calculating your annual motoring costs, that fromnow on it’s all about what band you’re in!

SIMI DIRECTOR GENERAL SAYSCONSUMERS ARE GETTING THE

BEST OF BOTH WORLDSSIMI March statistics show new car registrations for the month at21,590, a decrease of 23.19% on March 2007 when new car reg-istrations were at 28,107. Year to date statistics for 2008 arerecorded at 93,045 compared to 100,297 over the first 3 months oflast year a decrease of 7.23%. While the March figures show a fairly significant fall on last yearthey need to be viewed in the context of the very unusual businessmonth that resulted this year from the convergence of the StPatrick’s Day and Easter Holidays. This produced a month withsignificantly fewer working days than 2007 and virtually a two-week holiday period. Commenting on the figures SIMI Director General Alan Nolansaid it would be misleading to draw too many conclusions fromthese figures as they do not provide an accurate comparison withthe same period last year. A true comparison of the market won’tbe available until the release of the registration figures for April.Alan Nolan continued "we believe that April this year provides theopportunity to pull back some of this reduction, which was partlydue to the earlier holidays, Easter having fallen in April last year, and partly due to consumer confusion over Road Tax earlier in themonth". "With the benefit of the Road Tax concessions now available topeople buying before July, this really is the time for consumers toget out and shop around to research the best deal available tothem, whether for delivery now or after July." Nolan concluded bystating that consumers have a great opportunity to take advantageof the best of both worlds, the best bargains under the old and thenew tax systems, by shopping around now.

BMW to score well in CO2 VRT More than two-thirds of BMW entry level variants across its mod-els range will fall in price when the VRT charging shifts to a CO2based regime on July 1.A typical example is the 118d, which will costs 29,192, com-pared with 34,600 under the outgoing VRT system.Under the banner EfficientDynamics BMW vehicles employ arange technologies such as Brake Energy Regeneration, AutoStart-Stop and Electric Power Steering to help cut fuel bills andemissions. BMW has introduced EfficientDynamics across almost all of itsrange in 2007. The Group is on target to meet its commitment toreduce the CO2 emissions of the combined fleet by 30 per cent bythe end of 2008 compared to 1995 figures. From 1 July 2008 the 318i ES Saloon, 2.0-litre petrol, will cost36,366, a reduction of 4,484. At 142 CO2 g/km it will be inBand C. The 318d ES Saloon, 320d ES Saloon, and 520d SESaloon will all be rated in Band B

SEAT BELTS PROTECT PREG-NANT WOMEN’S BABIES

A pregnant woman who wears a seat belt greatly reduces the riskthat her baby will die or be seriously hurt in a vehicle crash, according to a study that debunks the notion that seat belts areharmful to the fetus.Pregnant women who wore seat belts cut therisk of their fetus being killed or experiencing other serious com-plications in a vehicle crash by 84 percent compared to womenwho did not wear seat belts, the researchers said.

YOUGHAL HANDBALL &RACQUETBALL CLUB

On Saturday 26th April the Club held its annual Racquetball tour-nament. Given all the recent interest in the Club we were expect-ing a significant entry but unfortunately this did not happen and itwas the usual crew that made up the bulk of the entries.Congratulations must be given to Patrick McCarthy in his firstcompetitive outing where he was paired against Trevor Gallogleywho is on top of his game at the moment. Patrick played well andpulled off some good scores, but Trevor was to prove too strongand came through to win 2:0. The first semi-final saw Wayne Fitzgerald against AndrewGallogley. These two players have a long history of playing eachother with Andrew historically taking most of the spoils. Saturdaywas no different, Andrew played a good serving game and keptWayne to the back wall allowing him a good command of thecourt. Andrew qualified for the final 2:0. Next semi-final sawTrevor Gallogley play Colin Kennedy. Colin is relatively new tothe game and did very well to make it through to the semi-final.Colin chased everything all day and kept with Trevor for much ofthe first game. However, it was Trevors speed and power thatproved to be the difference and pulled through to win 2:0 also.So we were in for a cracker of a final, father versus son, Andrewand Trevor. The game opened with pace, Trevor played some hardand fast balls that Andrew found difficult to keep up with. However, once he got into serve he chipped away at the lead thatTrevor had opened. Trevor and Andrew were both trying to playthe game in their own respective styles. Trevor was anxious tokeep the pace up and play some low hard balls with Andrew doinghis best to wrap the ball around the walls and draw Trevor out ofthe center-court. This worked to an extent, but Trevor was pick-ing up too many points from serve that had Andrew working hardto catch up with in open play. In the end it was Trevor that camethrough as champion on a 2:0 scoreline. Congratulations toTrevor! By Anthony HorganSenior TeamPlayoffs are currently still ongoing as there was a dramatic twistin Midleton last Saturday whn they failed to get anything out oftheir home tie with Lakewood loosing the game 1-0. The playoffties finished like:Laekwood 1 - 0 Youghal United.Youghal United 0 - 0 Midleton.Midleton 0 - 1 Lakewood. This means that Lakewood go up to Division 1 as leagueChampions and leave Youghal United and Midleton to battle it outonce more to decide who will join Lakewood next season. As thescore lines show there was only a kick of a ball between all threeteams. The Youghal Utd v Midleton playoff game is fixed forCobh Wanderers pitch on Thursday 8th May at 18.30.CIT 1 - 2 Youghal United. We also had another game in between all the playoff ones whenwe travelled to CIT for a Beamish cup tie. This was not a spectac-ular game but we came away with a win and into the quarterfinals. We were drawn at home against premier division sideDouglas Hall who sit in third position in their league. This is agame we are all looking forward to and a huge test for the lads tosee how far along we have come when up against top opposition.First priority is to get promoted to Division 1 and then we canhave a go at Douglas Hall ( game not fixed yet!).Injured players! We had a bit of misfortune during the playoffs when we lost keyplayers Mark Hennessey , Robert Cronin and Alan Hennessey. Wewish them a speedy recovery and hope they will be back for thebig tie with Midleton.Under 15’sYoughal United 2 - 0 Park United. The lads continue on winning ways with a good 2-0 win over ParkUtd. Colin Sheehan and Dave Herlihy got on the score sheet hereand this puts the lads in a strong postion in second place with justthree games remaining. We wish all concerned all the very best inthe last few games. Best for Ross McCarthy and Conor Sullivan.Summer Soccer Camp!!!Attentation all parents - this years soccer camp will start on the30th June and run for the week till 4th July. YOUGHAL RUGBY CLUBUnder 16 Cup FinalYoughal 9 pts to Douglas 3 ptsOur under 16’s won the south munster under 16 "A" grade cup forthe 1st time in over 20 years when they defeated a gritty Douglasside at Musgrave Park recently.Youghal who had defeated cup favoretes Highfield in the Quarterfinal were height favourites against the city side who had causeda few shocks in the earlier rounds by defeating a fancied Sundayswell outfit while also getting the better of a srong Muskerry team.Youghal played against the wind in the first half but took the gameto there bigger apponents. Out half Alan Frahill - O’ Connor putYoughal ahead after 15 minutes play with a well struck peneltybefore Douglas worked their way down field backto kick a penel-ty from their full back Eoin Philpott. Youghals fowards were mak-ing big inroads into the Douglas defence and ater good runningsby Danny O’ Brien & Anthony Mason out half Alan Frahill O’Connor kicked a superb drop goal to make the score 6 pts to 3 athalf time.In the second half Youghal pressed hard for a try but a tough tack-iling Douglas defence kept them out on a nuber of occasions.Youghal side managed to increase their lead when Alan Frahill O’Connor kicked his second penalty but Douglas to their creditalways tried hard yo break down Youghals defence. The Seasiders did finish strongly with Danny O’ Brien and DeanMarray going close to scoring. However there was no more scoreswith Youghal winning out deserving winners over a gallantDouglas XV. Everyone played their hearts out for Youghal specialmention must go to Danny O’ Brien , Justin McCarthy , DeanMurry and Brendan Finn who worked hard in the foward. BacksAlan Frahill O’ Connor , Alex Haodlay who played excelent whilefull back Jason Drake was in top form. This was a great season forYoughal having lost only one game for the entire season in Cup
