"West Side” Changing Lives Forever -

Bridges out of Poverty

Many of our efforts involve helping people with short term solutions to their needs instead of helping to elimi-nate their need. One way to provide long term help is a learning opportunity we call "West Side” Changing Lives Forever - Bridges out of Poverty. It is a joint ef-fort with Saint Anthony, Saint Christopher, Saint Gabriel and Saint Michael SVdP Conferences.

This training is a Facilitator supported, group based, study program conducted by 12 "Investigators". The Investigators are people who have decided to improve their lives in any of eleven areas including financial, spiritual, mental, etc. so they can move away from gov-ernment and other assistance.

The most recent class started Monday April 18. We still need Mentors, meals and childcare volunteers for the class. The training lasts about 18 weeks. For more information about becoming a mentor please check out http://trustedmentors.org/

These people need our help. They have decided to im-prove their lives, how can you help? Is God calling you to share your skills or time?

If you would like more information on how you might be able to help please call or text Paul Guenin at 317-627-2309 or [email protected].

A Moment with Fr. Dan

Dear St. Christopher Parish, There's an old adage that states, "Never talk about religion or politics." Well, today I am ignor-ing that adage, & so should you. Whether we like it or not, its election time--at least for the pri-maries. And we have a duty, an obligation, to participate in the democratic process. Pope Francis explains, "We need to participate for the common good. Sometimes we hear: a good Catholic is not interested in politics. This is not true: good Catholics immerse themselves in politics by offer-ing the best of themselves so that the leader can govern." In order to perform this civic duty that stands before us, we must be both informed & well-formed. We must be informed as to the policies each candidate supports, & we must have a well-formed conscience that serves as our moral compass in casting our vote. With one or both miss-

ing, we stand to lose this election, regardless which candidate wins. As Catholics, as citizens of the United States, & as human beings created in the image & likeness of God, it is up to us to make this world a better place. As to the first concern--being informed--I leave that up to you. Watch the news. Read the paper. Do your own investigation into the candidates & the issues they address. Learn who it is we are electing to potentially lead our nation, culture, & society for four years or more. As to the second concern--being well-formed-- I offer the following advice. Catholic social teaching posits four principles, four staples that guide our view as to what a godly society looks like. These four principles are: 1) The dignity of the human person; 2) The common good; 3) Subsidiarity; & 4) Solidarity. When all these principles are present & working together, it creates a well ordered society in which all are equal, all are provided for, & all are free. The first principle is probably the most well known of the four. We hear about the dignity of the human person all the time as Catholics, especially when we talk about such issues as abortion, euthanasia, discrimination, & rac-ism. But it goes farther than that. It means that any social policy--any decision that has far reaching implications--must take into account how it effects every human person. In other words, if a policy that is promoted for the sake of the common good inevitably infringes upon the fundamental rights of individuals (right to life, right to worship, right to free speech, etc.), that policy is not morally acceptable. Every policy must take into account all people & every person. The second principle is the common good. According to Catholic teaching, the common good is the sum total of social conditions which allow people, either as groups or as individuals, to reach their fulfillment more fully & more easily. The common good means that society provides access to basic human needs: food, shelter, education, em-ployment, living wages, dignity of work, health care, housing, religious freedom, & family life. In other words, if a well ordered society aims for the common good, than all citizens of that society should have the opportunity to have their basic needs met & therefore have the opportunity to find fulfillment & live life to the full. If access to these needs is denied, then we are denying individuals that fulfillment. The third principle is subsidiarity. This word (that even my computer's spell-check didn't recognize) essentially means that society should be so organized that local issues are handled at the local level & national issues are han-dled on the national level. This allows for a democracy--a true self-governance--that addresses the immediate needs of the community in the most effective way possible. Of course, the building block of the entire social structure is the family. Without the family, local governance does not exist, nor does the nation. Therefore, respect for the fam-ily should be reflected in every policy & program. And the fourth principle is solidarity. Solidarity reaches beyond nations & governments & recognizes that we are one human family. We are interconnected to one another as sons & daughters of God, regardless of our nationality, race, economic or social status. Just by the very fact that we are all human, we owe it to ourselves to promote peace & justice around the globe. We have an obligation to help all those in need, especially the poor & the marginalized. We are responsible for the wellbeing of the elderly, the ill, the imprisoned, & the oppressed. We even have a duty to aid the migrant & the displaced. We are all God's children, & that reality must be recognized & respected. All four principles work together. One without the others ignores the big picture & leads to extremes in society that are neither healthy nor viable. Our job as Christians & citizens is to elect the candidate who most closely aligns his / her policies with these principles. If this seems like a lot of information in a short amount of space, it is. For more on Catholic guidelines for vot-ers, check out the USCCB (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops) website for an article entitled "Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship." It’s an easy read & helps outline all the issues facing our nation today. And lastly, before you cast your vote, I ask that you pray. Pray for the candidates. Pray for their families. Pray that the citizens of the United States will be both informed & well-formed. Pray for our nation. And may God bless America! Yours in Christ, Fr. Daniel Bedel Sed Lux Lucet In Tenebris
