SPONSOR & DONORSOver the last four years the Association has been preparing for the week of celebrations for our Centenary. Theorganising committee recognised the need for sponsorship if the events were to be at the standard the occasiondeserved while making the occasion as accessible as possible for our members.

Nicky Nicholas and Bartley Kakulas were the spearhead of our fund raising efforts and targeted $50,000 as anappropriate amount to work towards. We are delighted to tell you that the target had been exceeded at the timeof this publication. The estimated cost of the Gala Dinner per person is close to $200, it follows those tickets at asale price of $140 are subsidised to the extent of $60 each.

The organising committee, on behalf of the members, is grateful to our sponsors and donors whose generosity hashelped make this momentous event possible.

The book was written by my grandfather Paul Boyatzis and Nicholas Pappas. It was published in NewSouth Wales by Halstead Press. It was and still is being sold to the public in selected bookstores.

The book has been handled well and is in very good condition. It is a paperback and tells the story of thetragedy of the Empire Patrol. There are also maps and pictures that relate to the text inside. The cover hasa photo of the Empire Patrol which is blue and the authors- Paul Boyatzis and Nicholas Pappas written inyellow. The title of the book is ‘Embers on The Sea’. The book is 128 pages long.

The co-author of this book is my grandfather. The other co-author is Nicholas Pappas who teamed upwith my grandpa to write the book. My grandfather was onboard the Empire Patrol and he came toAustralia when he was 10 in 1947. This was because his dad was already in Australia.

The boat Empire Patrol had onboard some of the population of a tiny Greek island called Kastellorizo. Itwas used by the British to transport the population to Kastellorizo following its bombing during theSecond World War. The boat caught on fire on its way to Kastellorizo. Someone had left a stove onsimply when they were warming up some milk.

A lot of the passengers had to jump off the boat, such as my grandfather and when doing so he bumpedhis head on the side and still has a small bump on his head next to his eye. A lot of the passengers alsodied because they either couldn’t get off or they drowned.

This book is very special because it reminds my grandfather of his assistance to record why the EmpirePatrol went down. It also eases the pain of those who lost family and friends in the tragedy because notknowing what really happened but still knowing they did not survive is a terrible thing and thanks to himand Nicholas Pappas they now know.
