Why Study In The USA
The USA has the world’s largest international student population, with more than
1,000,000 students choosing to broaden their education and life experience in the
United States. Nearly 5% of all students enrolled in higher-level education in the USA
are international students, and the numbers are growing.
The USA has the world’s most flexible education system, students can study their area
of interest as a specialization. As the education system of the USA is not centralized, each
institution can determine its program and admission standards with the possibilities of
lateral movement in the education system at any time. Some U.S. colleges and universities
stress broad educational principles; others emphasize practical, employment-related
skills; and still, others specialize in the arts, social sciences or technical fields. American
colleges and universities offer three basic programs; Associate’s, Undergraduate,
Graduate degrees (Masters and Doctorate)
One of the most attractive aspects of US education is that the majority of the students
pursuing higher education in the USA have been successful in securing financial aid in
form of research/graduate assistantships, tuition fee waivers, fellowships etc. There are
several international organizations, such as the Fulbright Commission, who grant aid to
students all over the world to study in the USA.

What You Should Know
Work Opportunities
Students are permitted to work 20 hours per week on-campus during the first year
of study and part-time jobs/internships off-campus from the second year to fulfil
academic or financial requirements. The on-campus jobs do not pay much and certainly
not enough to finance a university education. This kind of jobs can only be a supplement
to other funds.
Along with the acceptability and recognition of education, USA also offers the best in
terms of future job prospects and immigration possibilities after studies. All students
are entitled to stay back and work for one year period in the USA under OPT (Optional
Professional Training). For STEM Graduates(Science, Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics) the OPT can be further extended to another 24 months (Total 36
Months). Students who are successful in finding a suitable placement can apply for H1B
(Job Visa) during this period.
As an undergraduate or postgraduate international student studying in the United
States, employment is possible on a part-time basis for up to 20 hours every week.
During the first year of education, students may only work on-campus, such as at the
school’s gym, cafeteria, bookstore, or library. Working for 10 to 15 hours per week may
be enough to cover books and personal expenses, but will not cover the majority of
education costs.
www.maximseducon.com
Upon graduation from your education course in the USA, you may apply for an Optional
Practical Training (OPT), which allows you to work in the United States for 1 year after
your final examination in a field related to your major area of study. An OPT may be
extended if the employer approves you to continue your work in the United States.
Most international students in the United States hold an F-1 visa, which is the U.S. non-
immigrant student visa. F-1 students are allowed to work in the United States, but only
under certain conditions and under complex guidelines and restrictions issued by the
United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS). On-campus employment is
the category most freely permitted by the USCIS regulations, and it does not require
USCIS approval. However, although F-1 status includes an on-campus employment
privilege, on-campus employment opportunities at most schools are limited.
Even if you can obtain a job on campus, you may not rely on it to prove financial resources
for the year, and often these jobs are not related to your studies. Many schools do require
that you obtain permission from the International Student Office before accepting any
on-campus employment, and may not permit such employment in.

Legal Migration
• After your PhD, get your OPT, your school’s office of international students should
help you with this and any questions you have regarding the process.
• Get a job, make sure your employer understands that you intend to apply for a GC.
Note, the GC process (via employment) is your employers. You don’t apply on your
own (well unless you’re going through the National Interest Waiver process - which
is more challenging).
• Once you get a job, your employer will apply for an H1B on your behalf. The H1B
gives you more breathing space for 3-6 years, during which time you should be
applying for your GC.
• Your employer basically takes care of the rest. The process is divided into 2 - the
I-140 and I-485 stages. The I-140 stage depends on whether you have enough
experience and qualifications to apply for EB1 or EB2. The EB1 route is far easier
but the EB2 route is also ok so long as your employer is willing to put in the effort. it
requires an intermediate Perm step by the Department of Labor.
• Once your I-140 is approved (should take about 1 year), you’re basically close to the
finish line.
• Apply for your I-485, barring any backlogs at the USCIS, this is usually a 1-year
process and should be more of a formality. After this is approved, you should get your
GC in the mail in a few weeks. Your family is automatically part of your application so
they get GCs too. Chances are you and your family may need to sit for an interview
but this is relatively simple.
