  • 5Our contacts have diversified too. Along with the strengthening of our relationship with our traditional partners: North America and Latin America, we are now looking for new alliances and markets in the regions that, in the xxi century, are at the forefront in innovation and economic growth, such as Asia Pacific, the Arabian Peninsula and India.

From the diagnosis of the new international scene, from the beginning of his governance, the President Enrique Pea Nieto defined a vision to establish a modern and proactive foreign policy, not only focused in the defense, but also in the active promotion of concrete interests that are seen in tangible results.

Currently, our country is the 15th economy in the world and we have 12 free trade agreements with 46 countries, which give us access, in preferential terms, to the 60% of the worlds market, which means a total of 1.2 billion potential consumers.

Only with United States, our bilateral trade has grown 547% since the beginning of nafta and, recently, we ratified the Trans-Pacific

Partnership, which will give us access to 6 new countries, adding 155 million consumers for the Mexican products.

Regarding tourism, last year we reached a new historical record with over 31.2 million visitors and an economic income of over 17 billion dollars. Since 2012, this industry has increased 37%, and in 2015, Mexico was among the top 10 international destinations in the ranking of the World Tourism Organization. This achievement was thanks to the dynamism of the private sector, the determined action of the government and our natural and cultural wealth, since we are the 4th country with greater diversity in the world and the 6th with more recognized places by unesco as Heritage of Humanity.

In light of this great potential, a major focus of the international tours of the President Pea Nieto, and those of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is the promoting of opportunities of trade, investment and tourism, as well as a closer collaboration with the private sector.

For example during the recent work visits to Europe, groups of Mexican entrepreneurs

accompanied the delegation in order to strengthen and opening new spaces with strategic partners through meetings and signed agreements. Germany has 1,835 signed agreements operating in Mexico, which create around 120,000 direct jobs. United Kingdom is one of the main countries that sends tourists to Mexico, with more than half million in 2015. The Netherlands is our third greatest investor with significant companies such as Unilever.

All these efforts are framed in the premise of inclusive development, meaning that the benefits of national development can be exploited by entrepreneurs of all sizes, and can be also translated in more jobs for workers in industries that offer greater salaries.

The foreign policy as a way of public service is the one in charge of translating the presence and excellent political dialogue that Mexico has with the world. A dialogue based in initiatives and actions that have a positive impact by transforming and improving the reality, opening doors, opportunities and prosperity.

THE INFLUENCE OF THE FOREIGNPOLICY OF MEXICO

IN THE INTERNATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE COUNTRY.

The international presence of Mexico is not new but the terms and languages of our relationship with the world have changed significantly during the past thirty years.

We went from having a connection based in cultural affinities to an opening underpinned in our commercial exchanges, tourism, investments and cooperation in science and technology.

The talent of Mexicans is the best resource that our country has to make a better industrial competitiveness and face the actual challenges on economic and social matters.

The productivity of our economy can increase substantially through applied innovations and technological development, training of productive talent, the promotion of industrial competitiveness and the strengthen of the productive linkages with inclusion of the smes, that can make a difference of what is made in Mexico in the face of our main business partners and competitors.

Convinced that the industry is where we can create a higher amount of jobs, added value to products made in Mexico and successfully compete outside the country; we established the Group of High Level for the Industrial Competitiveness, where we set up the bases for the settlement of a National System of Industrial Competitiveness, with competitiveness simulators, and regional and national agendas based in the World Economic Forum model, using the National Index of Competitiveness, which we will create along with the shcp, the Ministry of Economy, Banxico and inegi.

On this matter, one of the immediate needs of the industry is the connection of the academy and the industry, to guarantee that there will be graduates with the required knowledge and abilities that will allow us to face the challenges of the global economy of knowledge in permanent change. For this reason, it is priority for concamin to strengthen the links with the academic sector through different mechanisms that can make a virtuous circle where the educational offer covers the need of the labor market.

Through our agenda for the creation of talent, promoted by the Ministry of Public Education, the main goals of this connection are: promote the development of a business and innovation culture that focuses in the improvement of competitiveness of the Mexican economy; perform curricular activities along with the academic sector; create internships, visit and exchange programs; promote the transfer of technology and knowledge as well as scholarship programs for the first job, among others.

We, industrial entrepreneurs, believe in Mexico, therefore, we create in Mexico.

The characteristic that defines the society of knowledge is that it has become the main asset in the growth of nations.Universities have established as a highly demanded asset because they are the main creators of knowledge, although they are not the only ones, and because they are inserted in the dynamic of global competitiveness.

In the case of Mexico, in addition of carrying out functions of professional training, scientific research and dissemination of culture; universities have developed an essential role to create civic and democratic values.

Faced to current challenges, the schools of higher education need to endorse the quality of the offered services, as well as designing new approaches and strategies. It is important that universities promote creativity, entrepreneurship and team work, as well as the capacity of its professors and graduates in order to communicate efficiently in their mother tongue and other languages.

In order to reach this goal, it is necessary to strengthen the relationship with governmental, productive and social sectors to share projects that contribute to the scientific and technological development, to the solution of social problems and to improve the quality of life of people.

In accordance with its public good character and inherent right, it is urgent that our country applies policies that favor every citizens access to higher education in order to maintain its potential as a social mobility factor and to promote inclusion, sustainable development andpacific coexistence.

The quadruple helix would not be complete without the participation of society, who sometimes is, represented by nonprofit social institutions that look to solve the issues that affect the city, with humanitarian solutions that improve the life quality of people in challenging situations, by offering them a new opportunity of comprehensive growth.

In memory of my father, who taught me the power of words, who forged me in work and business, and mainly, who inspires the unity of my family; we have created the Fundacin Roberto Chvez Gracin for vulnerable groups due to age or disability.

This institution has no economic objectives and it does not accept religious, social or racial discrimination. Its mission and raison dtre is to give support to people, groups, sectors and regions of limited resources for the improvement of its life quality. We also work hard to settle and increase the survival conditions and the development of indigenous communities and vulnerable groups.

It is a priority, within the work of the quadruple helix, to raise awareness, motivate and promote actions in benefit of those that due to adverse situations do not have a voice or access to a platform of social assistance or rights commission.

Through these words, I invite the readers to get involved in social initiatives that create and promote charity activities in favor of social institutions, as well as to join and demand public actions that transform our city into an example of social commitment for other communities.

We cant talk about Jalisco without mentioning Puerto Vallarta, a place that, through the years, has established and strengthen as a wonderful tourist destination of high class, where its gastronomy and exceptional weather make of it an unforgettable and unique experience.

The greatness of this beautiful harbor is now growing in the business tourism. Thanks to Puerto Vallartas International Conventions Center (cic by its Spanish acronym); the business stage in the coast has transformed into the greatest economic promotion center in the Mexican Pacific.

cic can lodge more than 6,000 people on the inside and 21,000 on the outside areas. It is home of the majesty architectural work that is set deep in the limits of the estuary El Salado. It is the only place whose income has been used for the preservation and protection of this protected natural area, which makes it a socially and environmentally responsible company.

Through institutions like the Ministry of Economic Development of Jalisco, the invite is for every entrepreneur leader that looks for a unique platform to launch your event to the highest level in one of the most beautiful cities of the country.

    ADDED VALUEOF THE GROWING ECONOMY

The success of a city is the result of a strategic planning that doesnt depend on the time a politic is in power or on economic influences. Public participation united with the vision of the private sector are a factor that can exploit the social and economic development of a region,

and, even more when they are involved in the different levels of the government.

    - By Humberto Inzunza, President of The Council of Economic Development of Tijuana (cdt). -

  • 17IN THE WORDS OF...AUGE DE MEXICOGROWTH AND COMPETITIVE LEADERSHIP

The steps to reach a shared vision for a world class metropolis are guarantying the governability and increasing the life quality. In the Council of Economic Development of Tijuana (cdt), we have worked with our governing document: Metropolitan Strategic Plan 2034. Its main goal is to promote the economic, social and cultural development for the metropolitan area of Tijuana, Tecate and Playas de Rosarito, through its sectors and commissions, following the case of success of the rearrangement plan Bilbao Metropolis 30, in Spain.

Tijuana continues its hard work in order to achieve this goal by 2034, this is why it is very important that the other Mexican cities follow its example. The added value of the growing economy lies not only in the wealth accumulation, but in a city model in a short, medium and long term that includes information of the metropolis, better jobs, investment in human resources, articulacion on the social action, metropolis of the services for a modern region that

is tourist and industrial, urban regeneration, mobility and accessibility. Altogether, these actions will establish Tijuana, Tecate and Playas Rosarito as the main center in the Northeast.

In addition of the Metropolitan Strategic Plan 2034, cdt has managed to establish its main objectives for Tijuana since its foundation in 1997, such as the crossing points El Chaparral and Otay II, Centro Metropolitano de Convenciones, Museo Interactivo El Trompo, Consorcio and Tecnolgico de Baja California, among others.

All of this is just a part of the mission that we have in the Council for Economic Development of Tijuana to establish our cities as mainstays of innovation and modernization for the future generations, and thus, contribute to the Auge de Mxico.

    DESTINATIONS FORA HEALTHY LIFE STYLE

One of the recurrent thoughts of any human is to improve his or her life style, especially when talking about health. But, where to begin? How to obtain it? This can often turned into a conflict, driving us away from our goals. Nevertheless, a niche in the market that establishes

different cities as healthy life destination is growing in our country.

    - By Dr. Adrin Murillo, President Consejo de Marca Saludable S. A. de C. V. -

  • 19IN THE WORDS OF...AUGE DE MEXICOGROWTH AND COMPETITIVE LEADERSHIP

Nowadays, the main health concerns are chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, overweight or obesity; as well as the mental sufferings like stress and depression, since they affect both, quality and life expectancy. Mexico has a great opportunity to develop alternatives that meet theses needs and than can be added to the many options that are already offered in the health tourism.

The Cluster of Medical Services of Baja California is an example of innovation as far as the creation of destinations for a healthy life style. Its strategic plan involves local products that arent traditionally considered as services that contribute to health, but that are also within its complementary offer. In Tijuana specially, the participation of restaurants, gymnasiums, natural and

organic food stores or cooking courses is being promoted to develop a tourist product that promotes a healthy life style; one that approaches the visitors, in a complete and holistic way, to be healthy in every moment of life.

This encourages visitors to come not only looking to solve existing health problems, but to find solutions that, besides healing, prevent sickness.

In conclusion, integrating destinations for a healthy life style adds value to the increasing industry of health tourism, which increases the economic income, promotes the quantity and quality of jobs and improves the life of the producers and the consumers.

Whether it is with sculptures and paintings that decorate from corporative facilities to galleries and museums sponsored by the private sector, the Mexican art expands to the business world a rarely visited market- where crafts are a main part of the movement.

As sculptor and artisan, I have confirmed that the Mexican art promotes and shapes the identity of companies, in the same way exactly in which traditions and customs do to societys integral development. This means that through art, companies can reinforce their enterprises philosophy, values, mission and vision.

Crafts are the popular expression of a country with a rich cultural heritage. Each piece represents its own identity; my creations are eternal values made

I remember that time where I offered a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon Rose to a renowned entrepreneur and he told me: No thanks, I only take red wine, along with a phrase that echoed in my head: I do know about wine. I say to you, with sadness, that there are many people who think this way because of ignorance or lack of adventurous spirit to discover the wonders that the magical world of wine offers.

Some recommendations at the time of drinking wine are:

    1. - Enjoy it with your partner or friends.2. - Although we will always have a favorite wine, we should dare to try

    something new.

    3. - Read the labels can give us valuable information.4. - Read and share articles on winemaking will give us the possibility of

IF YOU SAVE A WOMAN...YOU SAVE A FAMILY

Women are the spiritual support of their families, and sometimes, they are also the economic support of their homes. We all have an important woman in our life that can fulfill the role of wife, mother, daughter, sister or she can be you. Health is lifes main ingredient, and most of the times, we do not appreciate it, until we lose it.

There is a commonly used expression in Mexico: Family is the most important thing, I would do anything for my children. Nonetheless, our actions express the opposite. If we dont have the culture of preventive healthcare, we can take away the most precious thing our childrens have: their mother.

I ask you, the reader. When was the last time you had a breasts self-exam, a colposcopy or a densitometry?

I know that I am addressing to women. However, the role of men can also make a difference in the health of the family. An early diagnose makes the difference.

It is important to teach our daughters to do the breasts self-exam and to take care of their body through healthy habits, such as good feeding, exercise,

medical consultation and annual medical check-ups. Our children listen to what we say but they imitate what we do, by seeding the culture of preventive medicine, we will harvest our familys health.

Every two hours a woman dies due to cervical cancer, and, in most cases, it could have been avoided with an early diagnosis. Feeding, genetics, sedentary lifestyle and certain lifestyles contribute to the development of these diseases, but the imminent danger is the lack of information, fear, or sometimes, machismo too.

Dont waste time or give priority to material things. Health is not everything, but without it, we cant do anything.

Love yourself and choose to be alive.

CREATIVE COMMUNITY CORE OF THE ECONOMY AND SIGNIFICANCE

    - Mauricio De Font-Raulx Rojas, General Director of Centro Cultural Universitario. -

The creation of urban spaces that combine the life style and demographic changes of high technology industries with captivating center that have cultural services is essential in order to promote the economy of ideas and capitalize the creative industry for the result of an

improvement in conditions to participate as a complete country in the world competition.

Universities and institutions focused on research are a bastion in the creative economy since they constitute a great source of competitive advantages because they act as a platform

for experimental projects of the private sector, providing the industry with technology, talent and tolerance.

  • 29SPECIALAUGE DE MEXICOGROWTH AND COMPETITIVE LEADERSHIP

Nonetheless, universities cant do it without help, the community must have the ability to absorb and take advantage of the innovation and technology that they create. They must also aid to the establishment of the range of services that make up the life style and quality of the place that creative people demand.

The combination of this with an economic infrastructure that allows the extension of a creative atmosphere, will allow the capitalization of the creative industry to the comprehensive development of any region.

Building a environment of people:creative city

To create a strong business environment, it is necessary to promote a general strategy committed to attract and retain people, especially creative people that for their profile will always be looking for ideas that show their potential and intellect.

This scheme must be open to diversity by working actively to develop a cultural exchange. In Jalisco stands out a project that has recently expanded its frontiers to form a new creative city where education, industry, entertainment, culture and economy converge; this is the Centro Cultural Universitario (ccu).

ccu has fostered an ecosystem where every form of creativity can emerge and grow as far asits capacities allow it.

Centro Cultural Universitario is a model of capitalization of ideas and culture that will help to have a better economic growth in the region, being a role model for other states to guarantee a solid future of the creative industry and the generation of ideas in Mexico.

JORGE VERGARATHE BUSINESSMAN THAT WANTS TO

    CHANGE THE COUNTRY

Few days after the launching of the TV program Shark Tank Mexico, the man behind the biggest nutritional products company in the world, Jorge Vergara, talks about his life, business

vision and his perspective on the land that saw him grow.

Grupo Auge recognizes the importance of his career, which inspires the new generation of entrepreneurs that has surprised locals and foreigners with risky but successful decisions. The Jaliscience magnate sees a change in the economic culture of Mexico, a transformation that will be a breeding of ideas and opportunities for the expansion and consolidation of

    national companies.

In the year in which Grupo Omnilife celebrates its 25th anniversary, the panorama of Jorge Vergara starts to clarify and expand, since currently it is a live example of the commercial

expansion, opening its way to South America.

Having the iconic facilities of Estadio Omnilife as background, the visionary man from Jalisco confirmed a new strategy that will redefine the way in which Mexicans watch soccer. Chivas TV makes its way in an era where streaming is the key for the main media outlets. A change that will be successful and that will also launch his prestige in the sports world at international level.

In Jalisco the growth of Jorge Vergara is well-known through Omnilife, Chivas and recently, the real estate business. What is the key that has taken your companies to success?

The key is to always search for innovation, with this, you attract benefits for the people that chase results and not money. Persistence and determination have made us the company that we are now; these have led us to make the most of opportunities. I strongly believe that growthis produced in every single one of us. We are the only company from Jalisco with presencein South America.

How has been the commercial expansion process of Jorge Vergara?

When I started expanding my horizons and decided to extend Omnilife to South America, people in Guadalajara called me crazy. Their perspective was limited only to United States. Since then, I confirmed that we, Mexicans, lack the vision of growing to other parts of the world. It is a fact that, even though many people still dont believe, we have competitive projects that can result very interesting to other countries.

The speech of Vergara has maintained constant throughout the years. His strengths come out in hard times. Thus, in the middle of an economic crisis (existential too), Jorge Vergara discovered that it is best to rely on yourself than to rely on a company to move forward.

Since that moment, one of the guidelines that took his company to success started. People that takes care of people, and he confirmed it in the recent celebration of the 25th anniversary of Omnilife. My goal is that they succeed in life (independent suppliers). I will never be busy for any of you, since my main interest is that you achieve your goals, that you grow, change your lives and that you share the benefits of Omnilife with your family.

Is the Mexican coherent in goal fulfillment?

Mexicans are learning to undertake and expand. Previously, they only look for their personal interests, to make money, be rich and enjoy it. We have been working on changing this perspective and on giving the Mexican entrepreneurs a vision of growth.

I believe that there is potential in Jalisco.

  • 35COVER

What drives Jorge Vergara to continue developing successful companies?

I believe that successful people must give back to society. I am very stubborn, I have to make Jalisco change. One of the reasons that I got into soccer is because we must achieve a significant change through sport activities. I am convinced that the day I achieve this, it will radically change the culture of children. But, why do I continue being so stubborn? Because I believe that we have a great potential in Jalisco.

Now that you mention soccer, was Chivas always in your plans?

Four years before the purchase of Chivas, I started planning it with a clear objective: to create a team of eleven Mexican players that will help me change the moral leadership of the country.

How does the passion for sports influences in business?

It was proved in a study made in Costa Rica, that when Deportivo Saprissa was champion, the countrys productivity increased 22%. It is the same in Mexico, especially with the million followers of Chivas.

It is said that men writes history with daily work, how would you like to be remembered?

The truth is that it doesnt really matter; Im not here to be remembered. I want to transcend with a clear objective, which is Omnilife and Chivas; transcend with the number of lives I have changed over the course of my life.

    Is Jorge Vergara happy?Yes.

We have been working on giving Mexican entrepreneurs avision of growth.

In economic terms, the Mexican agricultural and livestock sector has had a great dynamism in the last years. For the first time, we have a positive balance in the countrys food and agriculture balance. In addition, we have the first place in the world in the exportation of products like avocado, tequila, beer, cucumber, mango and guava. Additionally, we are among the first places in other products such as berries, maize, watermelon, tomato, lime, honey and bovine products. This is a clear example of the value that our sector and our field

    for the countrys economy.

THE MEXICAN VALUEPROMOTING THE AGRICULTURAL AND LIVESTOCK SECTOR

FOR THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF THE COUNTRY

    - Bosco de la Vega Valladolid, Vicepresident of the National Agricultural and Livestock Council (cna). -

We have always thought that the agricultural and livestock sector is strategic for the country because from our experience and contact with the producers, the crops and the earth, we recognize the value and the quality of products. We realize the importance of what we do by offering goods of the highest quality to Mexican homes, which assures an income to all those that worked in the production.

For this reason, we understood that to boost the sector also means to boost a national economic dynamics. This helps us to solve highly important matters, such as assuring the supply of basic food for the people and to preserve the great food diversity that our country has and that belongs to everyone.

We see the sustained growth of this industry in recent years as the basis that will allow us to have a greater growth in the future. If we succeed in the boosting of the Mexican field with the right politics and programs, with the organization and support of the Mexican producers; we will become a global productive and exporting power.

We know that to recognize the value of the Mexican agricultural and livestock sector means accepting a great responsibility to promote its growth and to take advantage of the opportunities.

To promote the investigation in the sector and the use of technology, are necessary actions to increase productivity and competitiveness.

This is what we look for because we also know that by doing it, we work along with many other Mexicans and succeeded in the increase of income of the small and medium producers, at the same time that we promote its organization in productive chains and clusters. The value of our field is undeniable economically speaking- and we know that by stimulating its growth, we boost the national economy.

We strongly believe that recognizing its value, its products and producers, is to accept both the sectors economic potential and its importance to us, to Mexico.

Our products are distinguished by unique features, such as their flavors, textures, and aromas; all of them are symbols that speak of their quality. The credit of the sector is also for us, to feel proud of the great esteem that Mexicans have towards our products.

Tijuana Innovadora is the sum of the work and effort that the society of Tijuana makes with the goal of restoring and promoting its image at national and international level. Thus, twice a year the city is host of presentations, panels and workshops of experiences and researches of Nobel winners, transnational entrepreneurs, athletes, scientists and artists, as well as the participation of outstanding Tijuanenses and a wide area of commercial network.

The activities focus their attention on emphasizing and showing the sectors that create an economic development in Baja California, making emphasis in the reinforcement of the bonds that this organization has with the state of California, since both form the Mega Region of innovation, and both are the epicenter of the binational life between Mexico and the United States.

It is possible to celebrate this due to the visible innovating mark of the industrial productions that Tijuana exports to the world, such as televisions, pacemaker components, and aerospace technology, among others.

Although the biannual program is displayed as the greatest showcase of the initiative, throughout the year are carried out exhibitions, concerts, sport festivities and environmental workshops. There, it is possible to waste time in a positive way, to share in the House of Ideas and to create Art in the Industry.

Thus, Tijuana has demonstrated that the reconstruction of the social structure is possible by taking back public spaces, with the revaluation of the work, and the implementation of a business culture that bets for the human capital and mental labor.

    LA PRENSA SAN DIEGO

THE WEEKLY NEWSPAPER OF THE LATINO COMMUNITY IN

    SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

The oldest Latino newspaper of San Diego, California, La Prensa San Diego has been growing under the leadership of its new Publisher & ceo, Arturo Castaares. The weekly newspaper started on December 1, 1976 and is San Diegos only bilingual newspaper,

reaching up to 40,000 copies per week.

Mr. Castaares bought La Prensa San Diego on July 31, 2015 to become the third publisher of the newspaper in its 40-year history. La Prensa San Diego started in 1976 by Daniel Muoz, a community college professor of Chicano Studies. At the time, there were no Latino media outlets in San Diego, so Professor Muoz started a community newsletter in Spanish to inform the community about important issues. That year, the newsletter officially became La Prensa San Diego, and after 2 years, became bilingual in Spanish and English.

I want to increase the scope of our newspaper into new communities of San Diego to better inform Latinos and raise awareness of the important challenges that we face.

    Arturo Castaares

Since 1989, Mr. Castaares has worked in politics and government, from the California State Legislature to assisting 74 political campaigns. During 1999 and 2000, Mr. Castaares also worked for the White House as an Advance Team member for Vice President Al Gores official travel.

The main focus of La Prensa San Diego is to inform and educate the Latino community on important issues and to help increase Latino voter participation in elections in order to gain more influence in changing laws that affect them.

The newspaper has endorsed Hillary Clinton for President in this years elections based on the racist and anti-immigration positions that Donald Trump has taken.

In recent years, Latinos have become a larger share of the voters in the US, and politicians, including President Barack Obama, have had to respond with real action.

Throughout many years of involvement and support of issues, La Prensa San Diego has become an important part of the Latino community in San Diego and its new Publisher wants to continue building the influence of the newspaper, hoping to maintain this work for the next generation.

Mr. Castaares also serves as Chairman and ceo of Manzana Energy, Inc.; a development company specialized in solar energy systems, biomass to fuels technology, and artificial turf installation projects. Castaares parents emigrated from Mexico and he was born in San Diego, so his bicultural, bilingual background helps make La Prensa San Diego an effective medium to talk to and for the Latino community.
