We're touching the past, to reach
into the future. On April4, Bank of Hawaii's Kahului branch will be expanding into the old Baldwin Bank Building at the corner of Kaahumanu and Puunene Avenues, an island landmark built in 1930. So as we prepare to expand our facilities to meet Maui's growing financial needs, it seems somehow appropriate that we're also reaching back to touch a part of Maui's past.

NOTES ON JURYING
What I look for in any work of art is the artist's vision, his idea of originality and his ability to follow through in his intent.
Sometimes his skills hinder his intent and this makes a problem. But this can be corrected and adjusted with work and persistence. Transcending mere representation so that an artist's work shows his inspiration or his vision is a more difficult problem but it is ultimately what I respond to in evaluating a work of art.
Allyn Bromley
I look forward to seeing the work of the artists of MauL I'm sure there will be surprises. I'll try to keep eyes and mind open to what is ... and it will find me.
Joe Hawley
What I am looking for in an artist's work is originality, imagination, integrity, and honesty. In other words, his final work should be a true extension of his mind and soul.

Dear People of Maui,
It is with great pride and pleasure that we open our doors to the 5th Annual Art Maui All Media Juried Art Show.
Tonight we honor the artists of Maui County, whose works have come together to create Art Maui '83. Each individual piece has been judged, and will be viewed and admired for its own uniqueness, thought, and beauty. Yet the show in its entirety says even more.
Art Maui '83 is a celebration of not only individual accomplishment, but a celebration of the arts in and of themselves. Our joining here tonight reflects a community reverence for the arts as an integral and necessary part of our lives.
In essence Art Maui '83 celebrates the efforts and devotion of artists everywhere who endeavor to touch our lives.
Mahalo to all those who have worked and shared unselfishly to make this show possible.
Aloha, Diane M. Haynes Chairperson, Art Maui '83
