    He ar r i ved i n Damascus on J ul y 3, 1849. Si r Moses had t he cour age togo, i n person, t o the Chur ch, and i n t he pr esence of t wo pr i est s hecopi ed t he t ext i n Ar abi c and I t al i an l anguages. I t appear s t hat t her ewas some doubt r egardi ng t he accur acy of t he t ext . . . .

    The t ombst one i n t he Capuci n Chur ch i n Damascus, as a r emi nder ofFat her Thomas' deat h, became a sour ce of cont i nuous concern f or Si rMoses. I n order t o request t he assi st ance of t he French Government , Si rMoses and Lady Mont ef i ore ret urned t o Par i s dur i ng t he mont h ofDecember , 1849. I n Par i s, Si r Moses met wi t h Gener al Laf i t t e, t heMi ni st er of For ei gn Af f ai r s; and soon ther eaf t er he was r ecei ved byLoui s- Napol eon, t he Pr esi dent of t he Republ i c.

    Accor di ng to Si r Moses, t he f ol l owi ng conver sat i on t ook pl ace at t heEl ysee Pal ace wi t h the Fut ur e Emper or of Fr ance:

    "He recei ved me wi t h a gr eat wel come. . . . Then Iasked Hi s permi ss i on f or me t o r ead my r equest .He l i st ened wi t h gr eat at t ent i on and expr essedHi s agreement many t i mes.     I n 1855 Si r Moses was pl anni ng t o t r avel agai n t o Pal est i ne.
