In this publication we intend to remove some of the
fear often associated with antenna selection and
installation, and address some of the frequently
asked questions regarding Digital Television.
Digital and Analogue Antenna
One of the most commonly asked questions is whether
today’s consumer will require a new antenna in order to
receive Digital TV. Most people have an excellent antenna
for receiving Digital Television even though they may not
be aware of it. The governing body responsible for the
introduction of Digital Television has given particular
attention to ensuring that, as far as possible, the existing
antenna should be of use. In some cases however, this
may not be possible.
It is therefore very likely, as digital transmission is rolled
out throughout Australia, viewers will be able to receive
both Digital and Analogue Television signals without the
need to upgrade. Some very old antennas in Metropolitan
areas may need to be replaced to receive Digital Television
on Channels 11 or 12.
Antenna selection and installation in Australia
Understanding Frequency Bands
Analogue and Digital services use the following
frequency bands:
• VHF television Band 1 (channels 0, 1 and 2)
• VHF television Band 2 (channels 3, 4 and 5)
(FM band)
• VHF television Band 3 (channels 5A, 6, 7, 8, 9, 9A,
10, 11 and 12)
• UHF television Band 4 (channels 28 – 35)
• UHF television Band 5 (channels 36 – 69)
Typical VHF antenna configurations are:
• VHF Band 1 (providing analogue channels 0-2)
• VHF Band 3 (providing channels 6-12)
• VHF Bands 1 & 3 (providing channels 2 and 6-12)
Typical UHF antenna configurations are:
• UHF Band 4 only (providing channels 28-35)
• UHF Band 4 and lower Band 5 (providing channels
28-50)
• UHF Band 5 only (providing channels 36-69)
• UHF Bands 4 & 5 (providing channels 28-69)
4 MASTER ANTENNA TELEVISION
5
In Metropolitan areas for reception from the main
transmitter (low powered), antennas should be capable of
receiving Bands 4 and 5 (for analogue and digital services)
In Regional areas, antennas should be capable of receiving
Band 4 and/or Band 5 (for analogue and digital signals.
In some areas multiple bands may be used, requiring
multi band antennas or multiple antennas depending on
the channels currently used in a particular area.
What signal level is best? Two factors will limit the range of signal levels that should
be present at the input to a DTT receiver. One is the
minimum level of digital signal, which must not fall below
the threshold (typically 35-45dBmv, but in some cases
higher). The other is the maximum level of signal that
can be applied before the receiver overloads. The highest
signal is usually an analogue signal, and this should not
exceed 77dBmv. All digital and analogue signals into a
digital receiver must fall within the scope of this window.
Typical combined VHF/UHF antenna configurations are:
• VHF Bands 1 & 3, and UHF Band 4 (providing
channels 2, 6-12 and 28-35)
• VHF Bands 1 & 3, and UHF Bands 4 & 5 (providing
channels 2, 6-12 and 28-69)
• VHF Band 3, and UHF Band 4 (providing channels
6-12 and 28-35)
Not all bands are used in all areas, and not all antennas
receive all bands, hence the requirement for different
antennas for different areas. The bands used and
therefore the antenna required, are dependent on which
transmitter is in place to service the area.
How do I select my antenna?
This is the million-dollar question, and nothing when
it comes to recommending antennas is guaranteed,
however, there are some simple rules to bear in mind.
In Metropolitan areas for reception from the main
transmitter (high powered), antennas should be capable
of receiving Band 1 (for analogue signal only) and Bands
3 and 4 (for analogue and digital services)
6 MASTER ANTENNA TELEVISION
Why introduce digital? The introduction of digital television in Australia is for very
good reason and will benefit those in both Metropolitan
and Regional areas. Digital uses a form of modulation
called COFDM (Coded Orthogonal Frequency Division
Multiplex). The result of this technology is a received
signal that is free of ghosts and noise, whereas current
signals may have annoying ghosting or noise corrupting
the quality of the picture.
Do I need to check my signal levels?
With analogue signals in the past, it would more than
likely suffice to have a portable TV with you to measure
signal with some accurate knowledge that the TV would
work. It is now important to measure the signal using a
meter that is designed for use with DTT (Digital Terrestrial
Television) signals. This is to avoid what is known as the
Digital Cliff Effect.
Analogue television signals have a tendency to become
noisier with reduced signal strength. Digital signal will react
very differently and fail altogether once the signal is reduced
beyond the threshold. This is the Digital Cliff Effect.
It is very important to ensure that there is enough signal
to allow for signal reduction due to antenna movement,
foliage growth and other factors that may affect
the signal.

NOTES to Table1 Television Band I (Channels 0, 1 and 2) and Band II (Channels 3, 4 and 5) are not being considered for the introduction or ongoing
transmission of digital television services.
2 VHF Channel 5A is currently within the broadcasting services bands (BSB) and has been recommended for clearance by the ABA and ACA to allow for the introduction of low earth orbiting (LEO) satellites. Channel 5A is not being considered for the introduction or ongoing transmission of digital television services.
3 Clearance of radiocommunication services from 202-208 MHz and from 222-230 MHz has allowed a revised channel arrangement to be implemented. The current channel arrangement has two new channels (channels 9A and 12). To accommodate channel 9A, channels 10 and 11 were shifted up in frequency by 1 MHz.
4 The majority of existing services on channels 10 and 11 were assigned using the superseded channel arrangement. Services on channels 10 and 11 may be required to shift in frequency to align with the current channel arrangement. Any such requirement will be considered on a case by case basis. New services on channels 10 and 11 will be assigned according to the current channel arrangement i.e. channel 10 (209-216 MHz) and channel 11 (216-223MHz).
5 UHF television Channel 27 has a bandwidth of 6 MHz and, therefore, is not currently suitable for digital television services. The ABA and ACA are considering ways of making use of channel 27 as a 7 MHz channel. As a 6 MHz channel, channel 27 could possibly be suitable for use by non-broadcasting services, e.g. datacasting services.
6 The ABA and ACA are considering spectrum that may be re-allocated for non-broadcasting purposes due to the increased spectral efficiency with digital television. In particular the use of part, or the entire frequency band 806-820 MHz is under consideration. Where practicable the ABA will endeavour to avoid the use of channels 68 and 69.
