REMEMBERING A SPECIAL DAY

“It’s FIESTA, FIESTA, FIESTA TIME!” says one of the organizers one Sunday in church. From her tone it is obvious that she is excited. I guess she feels excited because the Fiesta is a fun event and this project will help gen-erate funds for the upkeep of our Parish facilities. Because she loves our parish so much she invited everyone to

support, contribute, participate and help in any way to make this project successful. Let us show our love for our parish by getting involved with the Fiesta to make it successful in every way. Consequently the beginning of our Fiesta, which is on September 8, coincides with a very important occasion…the Birthday of

our Blessed Mother Mary. Sadly not every catholic remember this very important day. To celebrate someone’s birthday is an expres-sion of our love for them and to neglect celebrating it is like saying we don’t love them or that they are not important enough for us to remember their special days.

I got these from the article written by Rex Teodosio. Some reasons why a lot of Catholics fail to celebrate her birthday are:

- Very little is known of Mary’s birth. The oldest written accounts are controversial, but oral tradition has passed to us some details. In a famous medieval book called the Legenda Aurea, a brief history of Mary’s birth and early childhood is recounted. Then there are private visions showed to Blessed Maria de Agreda. She tells how Mary was born from the womb of St. Anne in a marvel-ous flash of light. The mother of God was not born in the pang of childbirth as is common to women conceived in original sin. - There are so many feast days of Our Lady like: the Immaculate Conception (December 8), Mary Mother of God (January 1), Our Lady of Lourdes (February 11),the Annunciation (March 25), the month of Mary (May),the Assumption (August 15), the month of the Holy Rosary (October), Our Lady of Guadalupe (December 12). All her feast days are special, but shouldn’t her birthday hold a special significance for us in the same way that Christmas does? - Another reason why most Catholics don’t really celebrate Mary’s birthday is because many don’t really have true devotion to her. We like the devotions where we can get something out of it, like the scapular (protection from eternal fire), the miraculous medal (miracles and favors), the rosary (peace in the world and in our families) or Our Lady of Lourdes (healing). The feast of the Nativity of Mary doesn’t hold any special promises as other feast days do.

Why should we celebrate her birthday? We celebrate her birthday simply because she is the mother of Jesus and our heaven-ly mother. Another reason is that in a world that has gone, at best, indifferent to the Blessed Virgin Mary, or, at worst, hateful, in the form of blasphemies and sacrilege, her faithful children should find it in their hearts to have more tenderness towards her. We must keep in mind that true devotion to Mary is in imitation of the love and veneration Jesus has for His own mother. Biblical citation or no biblical citation, it should be easy to debate this point with any bible thumper. The argument is as simple as it comes and is based on faith and a lot of common sense. How should we celebrate? With so many of her birthdays neglected and so many of her children neglecting it, it should be obvious that we need to first apologize to her in a form of reparation. Imagine if we didn’t celebrate our own mother’s birthday, we would never hear the end of it. We have a saying that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. So when we imitate her we give her a complement. Let us try to re-flect on her humble service with joy especially during her visit to her cousin Elizabeth. Extend a helping hand to someone in need and do it with joy as a gift to our Blessed Mother. These suggestions are not the only ideas you can do to celebrate Mary’s birthday. There are the common ones that are also good: rosary, novenas, fasting, almsgiving, etc. But, why not celebrate Our Lady’s birthday in style once in a while, especially, when so many have neglected it for so long?

DID YOU KNOW? Warn Tweens and Teens about Selfie Risks Teens and tweens typically like to push boundaries and test their limits, but the new trend of taking dangerous selfies has led to several tragedies. There are far too many people who think that taking a picture while driving, or standing out on a ledge, is more important than their own safety, and that getting “likes” on a photo makes the risks worth it. Talk to your kids about safety, smart choices, and being aware of their environment and surroundings, even when they’re using their smartphones. For a copy of the VIRTUS© online article “Selfies are More Dangerous than You Think,” email [email protected] or call (213) 637-7227

SABIA USTED?
