MatthewChapter 9:1-13
I DESIRE COMPASSION
I.Introduction
A. Jesus calm the sea.
1. The Disciples sure they were going to
die!
a) Accused them of having little faith.b) The safest place was the boat.
2. Jesus cast the evil spirits out.
a) They asked Jesus to get out of town. (1) 6 more miracles
II. Matthew 9:1.
A. Best placed at the close of preceding chapter.
1. Jesus was done at Gadara.
a) He honored the request.
(1) An entire town thinks Jesus is
more trouble than He is worth! III. Matthew 9:2
A. The Gospel of Mark gives us more detail:
1. Mark 2:1-5a) These 4 men cared about their buddy!b) Imagine if majority of Christians feel this
way?(1) Willing to risk
public!2. Few happy about this.
IV. Matthew 9:3
A. A crowded room and much noise.
1. Sitting next to each other.a) We think if we whisper – the Lord
can’t hear?
V. Matthew 9:4-7
A. What communication will be like in heaven?
1. He knew their thoughts!2. Thinking He is a blasphemer!3. Verse 5
a) Any one could say, “Your sins are
forgiven”(1) Indicating He was a fraud. (a) Jesus completely healed
this man!(i) Like to see the faces of the Pharisees.
(ii) More importantly to see the joy of the
paralytic! VI. Matthew 9:8
A. Jesus is more than just a man.
VII. Matthew 9:9
A. Matthew a tax collector or “publican”!
1. Matthew’s job: b) Publicans hated by
Jewish brethren.(1) Publican was hired by the Roman
government.
(a) Jesus told him to follow.
VIII. Matthew 9:10
A. We get saved and tell family and friends!
IX. Matthew 9:11-13
A. Pharisees considered themselves superior!
1. More of a statement than a question.
a) Why would He associate with these
low-lives?”(1) Typical of a religious spirit!
(a) It is the sick who need a doctor.
2. Common for a Rabbi to say, “go and learn what this means.”
a) He didn’t understand X. CONCLUSION
A. Pharisee a “picture” of what we can become.
1. We will “miss the point!”
a) Jesus came to fulfill the Law.
b) The Pharisees did not
understand the heart of the Law!
(1) Scripture found in several places: (a) Hosea 6:6 (b) 1Samuel 15:22
B. Their “religion” means little if it has not love!
1. The Law given to prepare the way!
a) The “impossible” given to
accentuate grace of God.
(1) Romans 3:10 b) Jesus saying He
was the Savior of the world!
(1) The Pharisees, PRETENDED
to be righteous.
