The monkey anD The Devila performance installation about racism

Created by Joanna haigood and Charles Trapolin

in collaboration with Sean grimm, Jodi Lomask,

raissa Simpson, Matthew wickett and kim euell

rich with searing energy, the Monkey and the devil addresses

a lasting condition of America’s racial history: present-day

versions of racism subtly coursing through modern culture.

examples abound, from hip-hop artists and sports stars to

conservative radio personalities, “birther” conspiracy theorists,

and unaccountably harsh police forces.

Choreographer Joanna haigood’s visceral hybrid of dance, theater,

and visual art combines contemporary movement, hip-hop elements,

and spoken text. Charles Trapolin’s remarkable set completes this

ferocious and eloquent production.

and local personalities, moderated by Dani McClain and featuring

political humorist w. kamau Bell and Jessamyn Sabbag,
