1 Administering a Total Academic Headcount License

OverviewThis document describes how to install and activate a Total AcademicHeadcount (TAH) license on a university campus. The TAH license is availablefor colleges and universities who wish to provide access to MathWorks™products to the faculty, staff, and students on campus.

The intended audience for this document is the person responsible foradministering the license—the administrator contact on the license. Theadministrator can also share this responsibility with others by identifyingadditional contacts on the license, called Asset Managers. Contact theMathWorks if you want to set up Asset Managers on your TAH license.

TAH License OptionsThe TAH license has these options:

• TAH Campus — Allows campus-wide access on university-ownedcomputers to all faculty, staff and students. TAH Campus licenses supporttwo activation types:

- TAH Designated Computer—see “Deploying a TAH Campus License:Designated Computer” on page 1-3.

- TAH Network Concurrent User—see “Deploying a TAH Campus License:Network Concurrent User” on page 1-20.

Faculty and staff are also entitled to install MathWorks software on theirpersonally owned computers and purchase additional products for theirown use (see “Installing Child Licenses in a TAH Campus License” onpage 1-44).

• TAH Student — Allows student access on their personally owned or leasedcomputers. This option can be useful when a university wants to providestudents with MathWorks products. TAH Student licenses support onlyone activation type: Standalone Named User—see “Deploying a TAHStudent License” on page 1-29.

The two TAH license options are independent of one another. One universitycan have both types. Each license maintains its own products, dependencies, and right to use.

Summary of StepsTo deploy a TAH Campus license using the TAH-Designated Computeractivation type at your institution, you must install the software on computersacross your campus and then activate each installation. There are severalways to perform these installations and activations, depending on how muchcontrol you want to retain over product usage at your site.

For example, you can perform all the installations and activations yourself. While this provides tight control over usage, it can be impractical at largesites.

The recommended approach, which balances the need to control usage withease of administration, is to allow end-users to install and activate thesoftware across the campus. In this scenario, you give each user the ActivationKey for the TAH Campus license. With this key, users can associate theirMathWorks™ Accounts with the TAH Campus license, install the software, and activate their installations. (To activate, users must have MathWorksAccounts.)

The following lists the steps in this process, highlighting the steps that mustbe performed by the administrator and those that can be performed by anend-user. See the sections that follow for detailed instructions on each step.

Deploying a TAH Campus License: Designated Computer

Steps Performed by Administrator

Step 1: Retrieve the Activation Key

Administrator

- Retrieve the Activation Key.

- Distribute the Activation Key to end-users.

- Set permissions on the license.

- Provide access to product files.

1 Go to the License Center at the MathWorks Web site. Log in to youraccount and, on the My Account page, click Manage Licenses to get tothe License Center.

2 Select the TAH Campus license from the list of licenses displayed on the MyLicenses page. The License Center expands the entry for the TAH Campuslicense, displaying the two activation types, TAH Designated Computer andTAH Network Concurrent User. Note that the two activation types for theTAH Campus license each have separate Activation Keys.

3 Select the TAH Designated Computer entry. The License Center displaysinformation about the license in the License Details pane below the listof licenses.

Select the TAH Designated Computer activation type for this license.

4 Click the Activation and Installation tab and, on the Activation andInstallation page, click Advanced Options.

Step 2: Set Permissions on the License

Administrator

- Retrieve the Activation Key.

- Distribute the Activation Key to end-users.

- Set permissions on the license.

- Provide access to product files.

The MathWorks recommends that you turn off Permission to Activate on theTAH Campus license because this limits who can get the Activation Key forthe license. In addition, by turning off this permission, you require end-usersto specify the Activation Key during the activation process.

If you want end-users to download the products on the TAH Campus license, turn on Permission to Download on the license, as well.

If you want to set either of these permissions on the license, contact CustomerService (http://www.mathworks.com/support/contact_us/index.html).

Step 3: Distribute Activation Key to End-users

Administrator

- Retrieve the Activation Key.

- Distribute the Activation Key to end-users.

- Set permissions on the license.

- Provide access to product files.

To install and activate, end-users need the Activation Key. After you retrieveit from the License Center, distribute it to faculty, staff, and students thatare part of the TAH Campus license.

Step 4: Provide Access to Product Files

Administrator

- Retrieve the Activation Key.

- Distribute the Activation Key to end-users.

- Set permissions on the license.

- Provide access to product files.

To install and activate, end-users need access to product files. There areseveral ways to provide end-users with access:

Steps Performed by End-User

Step 1: Create a MathWorks Account

End-user

- Create a MathWorks Account.

- Install product files.

- Associate account with TAH license.

- Activate installation.

To activate the software, you must have a MathWorks Account. You can use anexisting account, but the e-mail address used for the account must include theuniversity’s e-mail domain and the account must be set up for academic use.

You can create an account at the MathWorks Web site or during theinstallation process (see “Step 3: Install Product Files” on page 1-10)

To create an account at The MathWorks Web site, click the Create Accountlink. When you create the account, make sure to set it up for academic use, asshown in the following figure.

Summary of StepsTo deploy a TAH Student license at your institution, students must install thesoftware on their computers and then activate their installations.

The easiest way to deploy a TAH Student license at your site is to give eachstudent the Activation Key for the license and let them do the installation andactivation themselves. With this key, they can associate their MathWorks™Accounts with the TAH Student license, install the software, and activatetheir installations. (To activate, students must have MathWorks Accounts.)

The only activation type available for a TAH Student license is the StandaloneNamed User activation type. In this activation type, the software gets lockedto a particular computer and a particular user. During activation, the studentsmust specify their operating system user names, also known as login names.

The following provides a high-level summary of the steps involved in lettingstudents install and activate the software themselves. See the sections thatfollow for detailed instructions on each step.
