Now, can you draw your own shape picture using rectangles, squares, circles, octogens, triangles etc? An example is opposite.

You can draw a house, flower, rocket, anything you can create with shapes. Use a ruler to make sure your shapes are really accurate.

Once your picture is complete, count all the right angles in your picture. How many did you have?

Today we are becoming art critics and we are going to critique our art week focus painting. But first we are going to travel to the National Art Gallery to listen to a talk for all session about the painting. Pay attention to some of the language she uses when describing it:

It is quite long so feel free to skip some parts.

Before we look at the steps of critiquing art, first we need to understand that critiquing does not mean criticising and talking negatively about something, it means to analyse or assess something in detail.

https://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/paintings/paolo-uccello-the-battle-of-san-romano

Page 10: Maths Literacy - Amazon Web Services · Renaissance Paintings and Painters Italy was the birthplace of the Renaissance, and it was here that some very famous paintings were created

Ok, the 4 steps to critiquing art are:

1. Describe – What do you see in the artwork? What genre is it (portrait, landscape, abstract?) What paint was used? Explain everything you see in the painting.

2. Analyse – What is the focus of the painting? Is there a certain bit you mainly look at? Why do you think that is?

3. Interpret – What is going on in the painting? What is the purpose of it? Does it have a story? Why do you think the artist created this piece of art? Does it mean anything? If so, what does it mean?

4. Evaluate – Do you like it? Is it a quality piece of art? Why? What is the best part of it? What is the worst? And why?

Complete your critique on paper or by using the sheet. And remember to use a dictionary to look up any words you are unsure of. https://www.dictionary.com/

Make your own Egg Tempera paint.

Do you know the history of Egg Tempera paint? It’s quite interesting!

Early Renaissance artists, such as the artist we are learning about this week, Paolo Uccello, used this paint to create their paintings. It fell out of favour in the late Renaissance period once oil paints were introduced.

It was made from powdered pigments from things such as stones, sticks, bones and earth. They were mixed with water and then tempered with eggs which would bind it all together – they were nicknamed Egg Tempera.

Today you are going to make your own!

Page 22: Maths Literacy - Amazon Web Services · Renaissance Paintings and Painters Italy was the birthplace of the Renaissance, and it was here that some very famous paintings were created

You are going to make your own Egg Tempura paint using the instructions below.

Step 1 – Separate the egg whites from the yolks and drop the yolks into each of your bowls.

Step 2 – Add a small teaspoon of vinegar and water to the egg (the vinegar will stop the egg from smelling).

Step 3 – Mix food colouring or watercolours into the egg yolk.

Step 4 – Mix well until all the colouring is mixed with the egg yolk.

Step 5 – Repeat for as many colours as you would like to make.

You have now made your own paint! Now you can create your own painting with them.

Don’t forget to send us your creations on ClassDojo.

Skimming and scanning is a useful skill for finding important information quickly.

Read the questions first to find the key words to look for and then skim and scan the text to find the answers.

Q1. When did the Renaissance period begin?

Q2. Where was it born?

Q3. What disease spread through Europe?

Q4. What type of painting was often painted?

Q5. Who painted the most famous fresco paintings?

What Was the Renaissance?Up until the middle of the 1300s, life had been pretty hard for people in Europe. These years were called the Middle Ages, and this was a time period that was noted for excessive violence and rampant disease--a huge plague spread throughout Europe killing millions of people. After the plague had vanished for the most part, people began to escape these dark times by looking for hope in things like education, art, and how they could better themselves as individuals. Thus, the era of the Renaissancebegan. The Renaissance was a period of time from the mid-1300s until the 1500s where many artists, writers, and musicians produced incredible works of art.

Renaissance Paintings and PaintersItaly was the birthplace of the Renaissance, and it was here that some very famous paintings were created. Artists of the Renaissance often painted portraits, which are paintings or other images of people. Portraits were often made of wealthy individuals or showed images of God and events in the Bible. Arguably the most famous painting of all time is the portrait of an Italian woman thought to be the wife of a cloth merchant -- the Mona Lisa. This painting was done by Leonardo da Vinci, who was a Renaissance painter, sculptor, and scientist. Painters often used a technique of creating frescos. This is where a large mural painting is done when the plaster of walls is still wet. Once the paint dries, the painting actually becomes a permanent part of the building. Some of the most famous fresco paintings were created by da Vinci, and much of his work can be seen today in famous landmarks like the Sistine Chapel.

You have analysed, made inferences and learnt about our focus paint ‘The Battle of San Romano’ by Paolo Uccello and you have learnt some facts about the Renaissance. Now we are going to look at some of the other artists during the time period and some of their amazing artwork.

Donatello (1386 - 1466)

Donatello was a sculptor and one of the pioneers in

Renaissance art. He lived in Florence, Italy at the start

of the Renaissance. He was a humanist and interested

in Greek and Roman sculpture. He introduced new

ways of creating depth and perspective in art. Some of

Donatello's most famous sculptures include David, St. Mark, the Gattamelata, and the Magdalene Penitent.

Jan van Eyck (1395 - 1441)

Jan van Eyck was a Flemish painter. He is

often known as the "father of oil painting"

because of all the new techniques and

advances he made in oil painting. Van

Eyck was known for extraordinary detail in

his paintings. His works include the

Arnolfini Portrait, Annunciation, Lucca Madonna, and the Ghent Altarpiece

Masaccio (1401 - 1428)

Masaccio is often called the "father of Renaissance painting". He

introduced the painting of lifelike figures and realism to his

subjects that had not been done previously in the Middle Ages.

He also used perspective and light and shadow in his paintings.

Many painters in Florence studied his frescos in order to learn

how to paint. His works include Tribute Money, Holy Trinity, and Madonna and Child.

Page 31: Maths Literacy - Amazon Web Services · Renaissance Paintings and Painters Italy was the birthplace of the Renaissance, and it was here that some very famous paintings were created

Leonardo da Vinci (1452 - 1519)

Often called the true "Renaissance Man",

Leonardo was an artist, scientist, sculptor, and

architect. As an artist, his paintings are some of

the most known paintings in the world including the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper.

Michelangelo (1475 - 1564)

Michelangelo was a sculptor, artist, and

architect. He was considered to be the

greatest artist during his time. He is

famous for both his sculptures and his

paintings. His two most famous sculptures

are the Pietà and David. His most known

paintings are frescos on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.

Now, on the next pages are some clues pointing to one of the artists we have just been learning about. Your job is to look at the evidence and decide which artist it is. You can use the sheet or write on paper. Use the information on these slides and the internet to help you!

Here is a good site:

Botticelli (1445 - 1510)

Botticelli was a ward of the Medici

family of Florence during the growth

of the Italian Renaissance. He

painted a number of portraits for the

Medici family as well as many

religious paintings. He is probably

most famous for his paintings on the

Sistine Chapel at the Vatican in

Rome. His works include The Birth

of Venus, Adoration of the Magi, and The Temptation of Christ.

Today we are going to write a story inspired by our focus painting, which includes speech.

Watch the clip about using inverted commas for speech:

Thinking about the information we inferred yesterday, we are going to write a story about the painting. Think about why they are battling (you can provide a backstory on what may have happened), what the person at the front might be saying to the rest of the soldiers, what happens during the battle and what happens at the end.

You need to include speech in your story and use inverted commas. Your speech could be the soldiers talking to one another or a speech made before the battle or even at the end.

Did you know that during the Renaissance period there was a famous painter called Michelangelo? He painted the ceiling of a chapel in Vatican City (which is home to the pope) in Italy called the Sistine Chapel.

Painting a ceiling was tricky and he had to paint some of it while on his back. Although it was very difficult to do, it is still thought of as one of the most beautiful and famous pieces of art.

Click the link to take a tour of the Sistine chapel:

Today we are going to use our focus painting for inspiration to paint a battle scene of our own, but we are going to do it in the way Michelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel.

One you have decided on your battle scene, (you can either recreate the focus paining or design a new battle scene) you are going to either blu-tac or cello tape a piece of paper under a table or desk and draw/paint your picture whilst laying down on your back a la Michelangelo.

Make sure all of your supplies are near you so you don’t have to keep getting up and use a pillow or blanket to make sure you are comfortable. Try to cover the whole paper with your scene.

Don’t forget to send us your masterpieces!
