FORUM 14 June 2013

We dreamed a dream… A FTER months of eager

anticipation, the DVD of the Farlingaye production of Les Misérables was finally ready. To celebrate and enjoy it, the cast, musicians and crew were invited to a special ‘première’ - a high definition screening in the Sixth Form Common Room on Tuesday May 21st. Most people were able to attend and a good proportion of students dressed up in full black-tie, ‘Hollywood Première’ style.

It was lovely to see the show all the way through - for many cast members and all the musicians it was the first opportunity to do so. There was an agreed ban on singing along, but there were cheers and applause at the end of all the big numbers and it was a great opportunity to reminisce.

The DVD is an excellent record of the production and many thanks to the hours and hours of work that school technician Adam Deeble and Sam Brilliant (Year 13) have put in. It is fantastic for us all to have such a good quality memento of the production, especially for the many students who are leaving at the end of this year. We have a few copies

left for purchase at £12.50. If you are interested please contact Mr P i c t o n b y e m a i l a t [email protected] Ms Tyndale-Hardy

The Green Council O N a chilly Sunday morning in

March, members of the Farlingaye Green Council, armed with spades and buckets of mulch, went to work in a neglected corner of the school grounds. Their purpose was to plant a copse of young birch, wild cherry and rowan trees supplied as part of the Woodland Trust’s Jubilee Woods scheme. The spot was thick with nettles and required some clearing before the trees could be planted. We hope the trees will be of benefit to wildlife and absorb a little bit of CO2 from the environment, not to mention making the school site a little more attractive. At the time of writing the trees are growing well with only one casualty. We hope that they can live alongside the nettles, which are themselves a haven for insects. If the trees flourish, we may look to add to the copse in future years or look for further sites for tree planting around the school. Thank you to all the

Green Council members who helped with the planting.

As part of the Green Council’s continuing efforts to reduce the amount of disposable plastic items used at school, a dedicated band of members continue to wash up at school events such as shows and parents’ evenings. We hope by doing this to reduce the numbers of disposable plastic cups used. This year, at the Green Council ’s suggestion, the school has bought in five hundred reusable mugs made from recycled plastics. These are proving to be extremely useful, being lighter to carry around than ceramic mugs but still dishwasher-proof. We are grateful to Ms Hargadon and the FHSF for supporting us in this scheme and for providing the money for the purchase of the mugs from school funds.

The Green Council are always looking for ways to make the school a more environmentally friendly and sustainable place. If you have any suggestions that might help us achieve this, please let us know. Mr Hatfield

FORUM 14 June 2013

May Ball 2013 O N Saturday May 18th, once

again, the school was transformed for our annual May Ball. This year the theme was “Black and White” and our brilliant parents’ committee came up with i n gen i ous t ab l e and ha l l decorations. Guests arrived to a glass of bubbly and a chequer-board raffle with some fabulous prizes - many thanks to all the parents who responded to my frantic text! They walked down a red carpet surrounded by beautiful red mini rhododendrons, kindly donated by John Woods Nurseries. The hall was subtly lit with Christmas lights and candles, black and white films flickered in the background and e v e r yo ne w a s d r e s s e d i n appropriately coloured evening attire – very easy for the men!

The bar was popular and the food was fabulous. Vernon Blackmore of The Table and The Anchor cooked an excellent three

course meal of chicken caesar salad, slow cooked pork with a chorizo and bean sauce and raspberry crème brulée. By 9.30 pm people were up and dancing to a new band, “Austin Beats”, who proved to be popular. Fortunately I managed to avoid being dragged up for the conga!

Everyone clearly had a great time and I know everyone would want to thank the committee who work so hard to make it such a great event. These included Anna Greenwood, Juliet Campbell-Barr, John O’Brien, Ruth Edwards, Fred Stocker, Caroline Hale, Adrian Hine, Emma Lewis, Ellen O’Riordan, Lydia Sansom, Debbie Hambleton and Julie and Phil Attwater. I’d also like to thank Vernon Blackmore for the great cooking, Mr Mark Hill at ACE Hire who always supports us with a very fair price, John Woods Nurseries, Crown Nursery in Ufford and Paul Rudland who lends us the bar and bar fridges. Year 7 en France! O N Friday June 6th, 90 Year 7

students and nine brave members of staff took advantage of a rare nice day by taking a well-earned, post exam trip to Boulogne, France for the day.

An early start of 5.45 – 6.00am saw Jasmine Slater collect the day’s 1st award for ‘worst excuse for being late’ – claiming she had got the time wrong, only a last minute rush meant a complete group set off on the long journey across the channel. Everyone safely on board, we happily set off with fingers crossed for a sunny day by the seaside.

An uneventful crossing saw the group arrive in Boulogne on schedule at 1.30pm French time, and students and teachers split off into groups to find their respective restaurants. Nice lunches were enjoyed by all, and the day’s second award was shared between Ben Campbell and Georgie Beavis for ‘most mussels eaten in 60 seconds’. William Mayhew also collected the award for ‘I’m a student get me out of here!’ having accidently locked himself in the restaurant toilet. Luckily the owner (with the help of his French teacher) was on hand to set him free.

Next up was a tour of the old town, and a chance to see the fortifications under the glorious sunshine (for the first time in several years). Equally captivating were the local market stall holders, and (following umbrella hats in 2012 and the still popular berets from 2011) the must have for 2013 appeared to be novelty sunglasses (special mention goes to Troy Wingar for ‘most novelty sunglasses’ here).

entertained in Boulogne, we set off for some shopping in Cité Europe. Both staff and students took the opportunity to recharge their batteries before the trip home. All 100 brave souls loaded back onto the coaches, we set off for home – a choppy crossing between Calais and Dover not dampening spirits before the final drive home. There remained time for two final awards – ‘least comfortable sleep’ going to Luke Mann, and ‘last man standing’ going to Leon Cowell. Everyone home safely and accounted for, a great day out was enjoyed by all. For the staff at least (as well as a new year group), 2014 awaits! Mr Adams

Junior Maths Challenge T HE Junior Maths Challenge

(JMC) is the last of the Maths competitions and the year is ending with another fantastic set of results. The JMC is open to Year 6, 7 and 8 students and 14 students from some of the local primaries joined 85 Farlingaye students in this tough Maths challenge. The results were once again fantastic with an amazing

number of certificates being awarded. In Year 8, gold certificates were

awarded to Alex Cooke, Alice Brown, Imogen Stocker, Samuel Cottee, Daisy Nash, Anna Vincent, Luke Coates, Rosie Seabrook and Phillip Carlstroem. Alex scored a remarkable 122 (out of 135) and has again qualified for the Junior Olympiad although Alice and Imogen both impressively scored over 100 marks with Alice just missing out on an Olympiad place. In Year 7, gold certificates went to Josiah Brown, Alex Wakeling and Charlotte Wells. It is particularly pleasing to see how many students performed so well with 19 silver and 23 bronze certificates being awarded with nearly 60% of students receiving a certificate which is well above the 40% awarded nationally.

It has been a great year for Farlingaye’s mathematicians with nearly 300 students across all year groups participating in a range of individual and team competitions. Congratulations to all the students who took part and I look forward to further success next year. Mr Tait

Both have a close family member who has suffered a stroke and they wanted to show their appreciation for the support their families had received.

The money raised will be included in their Enterprise Day total.

Congratulations boys!

Gym and Dance Show W E had a lovely Gym and Dance

Show at the start of the term which showcased some of our outstanding dancers and gymnasts. In addition to the very accomplished performers it was also a fantastic opportunity for some less experienced students to perform some of the beautiful dances they had created. The audience were treated to a range of dance styles including Ballet, Contemporary, Street Dance and

Rock and Roll. Students across all year groups participated and one of the highlights was an exceptional dance performed by students in Years 11 to 13 and choreographed by ex student Florence Blackmore. Miss Alexander

in a track event and a field event and are awarded points that correlate to how fast they are or how far they jump or throw. Around 20 schools in Suffolk entered the competition and these were divided into two ‘county heats’. In our competition the Junior Boys’ team won, the Intermediate Boys also won and had a fantastic points total, the Intermediate girls won and the Junior Girls came a close second with a very credible points score. The students who scored the highest points across their two events were Morgan Dale in the Junior Boys, Jessica McFarlane in the Junior Girls, Adrian Sanday in the Inter Boys and Fatima Ejembi in the Inter Girls. All 4 teams had a points total that meant they would progress to one of the 3 Regional Finals and they will be competing in Watford on June 10th. Well done to everyone who competed so well in the Schools’ Cup!

The second team competition is held at Northgate and involves all the schools from Ipswich and South Suffolk. This year the schools have been put into 3 leagues and all of our teams have been put in to the A league with Ipswich High School, Ipswich School, Royal Hospital School, Woodbridge School, Copleston and East Bergholt. The year started us off with a great result! The Boys’ team finished second and the Girls’ team finished first and both showed a fantastic team spirit along with some outstanding performances. The Year 9 team came next but unfortunately two of the events had to be cancelled due to terrible weather, the high jump and hurdles are normally very strong events for both our boys and girls and students were disappointed that they couldn’t do these events. The Girls did well and came third with lots of individual wins and the Boys’ team were very excited to finish in first

place. For Year 9 there is also a County Final so the boys will progress to that later on in the year. The Year 8s had their competition this week and it was lovely to see so many students wanting to be involved. Again, there were some fantastic individual performances and many individual first place finishes. Against some very tough opposition the girls did very well to finish third and the boys second. Hopefully in the next forum we will be able to bring you the details of how the athletics season finishes. Miss K Alexander
