Numbers• Say numbers in order from 1 to 20• Recognise numerals to 20• Count reliably up to 20 everyday objects• Order numbers up to 20• Say which number is 1 more or 1 less than a

given number.• Using quantities and objects be able to add &

subtract two single-digit numbers and count on or back to find the answer.

• Solve problems, including doubling, halving and sharing.

Numbers at home•Look for numbers in the environment when you are out and about

•Say house numbers as you walk home

•Work out how many cups are needed when setting the table

•Make birthday badges for their teddies, pretending that they are different ages

•Count how many red cars they can see on their way to school

•Ask your child to go on a scavenger hunt when you are on a walk – collect 10 green leaves, 7 conkers etc

Adding and Subtracting At Home

         Ask your child how many fish fingers there are altogether on all of the plates at the dinner table

  Ask your child to find out how many sweets they will have left if they eat 3 from their bag of 5

   Sing counting rhymes such as 5 Currant Buns or 5 Little Speckled Frogs and discuss how there is 1 less each time

    Find out how many toys will be left when your put 5 away

Shape, Space and Measures

• Use everyday language to talk about size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time and money to compare quantities and to solve problems.

• Talk about, recognise and recreate simple patterns• Use everyday words to describe position• Use language such as ‘smaller’, ‘heavier’ or

‘lighter’ to compare quantities• Explore characteristics of everyday objects and

shapes and use mathematical language to describe them.

Shape, space and measures at home

•Talk about the different times of the day that you do things e.g. we leave the house at half past eight, we have our lunch at twelve o’clock, you go to bed at seven o’clock

•Encourage your child to use the language of yesterday, today and tomorrow when talking about what they have done or are going to do

•Encourage your child to look for different shapes in the world around them and talk about what the shape looks like (sides, corners, edges)

•Use positional language such as under, behind, on top of, in between, next to, when giving your child instructions

•Allow your child to pour out squash for everyone to have at meal

times to a certain level e.g. full or half full •Use everyday language to talk about money.

A Few Reminders:• keep PE kits in school, label clothes• add your child’s successes to our celebration board• your child needs a coat with a hood• please tell us if someone different is collecting your child• put a book bag in their drawer and check inside it every day• we have a special snack on a Friday• label all snacks • water bottles go in the yellow box in the classroom (labelled,

containing only water)• phonic books go home on a Friday, please put them in the box
