Mathematics Pathway

Mark updates will be given out regularly throughout the term.

Final marks are based on the following:

Grade 9 Assessment

All things in mathematics will be assessed in one of these four categories:

Knowledge/Understanding (40%)Application (40 %)Thinking/Inquiry (10%)Communication (10%)

Generally, most unit tests will consist of Knowledge/Understanding and Communication Questions. The Problem Set (Academic) will include a lot of the Application and Thinking/Inquiry Questions.

What is Assignment Day? (Academic only)

In most units this semester, you will have at least two major evaluations. One of these is the unit test. The other one is the unit assignment that will be written on “Assignment Day”.

On this day, you will be asked a selection of questions (around 4 or 5) that are chosen from a Problem Set that you will have received prior to Assignment Day. You are expected to prepare for this day by completing all the questions on the Problem Set.

You are encouraged to get as much help as needed to complete the assignment. Ask friends, family or your math teacher continuously so that you have a good grasp of the content. Working together can certainly help your understanding. On Assignment Day, you will be asked to put your notes away and answer the questions that have been chosen.

The questions on Assignment Day will be virtually the same as those on the Problem Set – only some numbers might have changed slightly.

• Historically, if students were NOT successful on this basic skills test, a VERY high percentage of them went on to either fail grade 9 math or struggle throughout.

• Your son/daughter has already written this test. If you have not seen the results, please ask your child’s teacher.

• Utilizing resources such as: Extra Help, www.thatquiz.org, www.themathpage.com, www.khanacademy.org will help!

A few years ago, many schools in the region began testing students on their basic skills at the beginning of the term.

Academic Basic Skills Numeracy Test

At the beginning of the year we are having a diagnostic evaluation on INTEGERS.

If you have not received them, you will have the opportunity to talk to your son’s/daughter’s teacher tonight about those results.

Every Wednesday, there will be another opportunity for students to complete another numeracy assessment. Over time, our goal is to have everyone improve no matter their starting point.

Just drop in Monday, Wednesday or Friday at lunch! Bring your lunch!!

If nobody is there, we are just across the hall!

Stay for 5 minutes or stay for as long as it takes!

Come with a friend or come by yourself!

Extra Help Room: 214

A. FREE on-line tutors. These tutors are experienced Ontario teachers. You will receive at least 10 minutes of one-on-one time with the teacher when you present your problem and chat with them.

B. Chatroom is available from Sundays to Thursdays from 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm but the rest of the site is always available.

C. Each grade 9 student will be given information to sign themselves up in class over the next week or so.

D. This is a program offered by the Government of Ontario.

E. Hundreds of “conversations already recorded”: simply search by your topic.

TEST DATE: Tuesday, June 9th and 10th for 2nd term students

EVERYONE in Grade 9 Applied or Grade 9 Academic math MUST write this test.

We will be doing a LOT of practice for this throughout the year. A good portion of every assignment has been created to prepare for the type of question that will be asked.

All EQAO work is worth 10% of the final mark.

1. Come to class, and come prepared. (Pencil/Lined Paper/Calculator/Textbook/Graph Paper)

2. Participate in class. Be curious.

3. Do your homework.

4. Seek help when necessary. Do NOT fall behind. Fix your understanding when something doesn’t make sense.
