QUESTION 1 Maureen, a resident of Hazyview in Mpumalanga, visited the Northern Cape Province
for the December holidays. She visited a local restaurant and asked to be served a
local healthier food. She was served with an ostrich fillet in naartjie sauce. Ostrich
meat is fat-free, low in calories and cholesterol, while being rich in protein.
The following is a recipe for Ostrich Fillet in Naartjie Sauce.
Serves 4 people
3,6 oz (ounce) Ostrich Fillet
1½ tsp beef stock powder
Juice and grated peel of 1 large
orange
60 mℓvinegar
1 tbsp honey
2 tbsp olive oil
1 can naartjies
Add salt and freshly ground
pepper to taste
Mathematical Literacy/P1 4 June 2015 NCS
1.1 The recipe requires 2 tablespoons (tbsp) of olive oil. How many mℓof olive oil
will Mapula use if 1 tbsp = 15 mℓ?
(2)
1.2 How many beef stock powders will be used to prepare the recipe for 20 people? (2)
1.3 According to the recipe, the oven has to be preheated to 400ºF. Convert this
temperature to ºC using the formula below: °C = (°F − 32°) ÷ 1,8. Give your answer to the nearest 10ºC.
(3)
1.4 In South Africa meat is sold in kilograms (kg). Convert the ostrich fillet needed
for the recipe to determine how many kilograms of ostrich fillet are needed.Use
the following information:
1 kg = 32,274 oz.

QUESTION 2 2.1 Loveday worked at Komatipoort for thirteen years and came back during the
December holidays in 2014 to Serville, his home town. Loveday wants to start a
garden service business in July 2015. He would employ two assistants to assist
him.
2.1.1 Use the givenANNEXURE Atocalculate the missing values of A, B, C, D,
and E. (10)
2.1.2 For how manymonths is this quotation valid? (2) 2.1.3 Write down the quotation number Loveday will have to use if he decides
to buy the equipment.
(2)
2.1.4 The two stroke oil is sold in bottles of 200 mℓ. Convert this volume to
litres. (N.B 1ℓ = 1000 mℓ.)
(2)
2.2 Loveday did not have enough money to buy materials from Manyeleti Hardware
Store. He therefore went to ZAMAZAMA bank to borrow R6 500. He was offered
this loan at 8,5% compounded annually for 2 years. Calculate the total amount
he will pay in total after two years.
(4)
Mathematical Literacy/P1 6 June 2015 NCS
2.3 The following is a summary of Loveday’s first month’s income and expenses
statement:
TABLE 1: Income and Expenses statement for Loveday’s first month INCOME: R7 200,00 EXPENSES
Salaries: R2 700,00
Petrol: R610,20
Oil: R28,94
TOTAL: R3 339,14
2.3.1 Calculate Loveday’s profit. Use the formula:
Profit = Income – Expenses
(2)
2.3.2 He increased the price of cutting grass per month from R360,00 to
R380,00. Calculate the percentage increase. You may use the following
formula:
% increase =
x 100
(3)
2.4 Loveday need a bakkie to expand his services to other areas. He saw the
following advert in the newspaper.
2.4.1 Calculate the price of this bakkieexcluding VAT. (3)
2.4.2 On inspection he discovered that the bakkie has a 36 litres fuel tank. If
the price of petrol is R13,62 per litre, calculate the cost of filling the tank.

QUESTION 3
Marite High School approached Tukutuku Company to sponsor them with the material
to fence, plant grass on their sports field and also paint the inside walls of one
classroom. The inside walls of a classroom are 6,2 m by 5,1 m and 3 m high. The
caretaker indicates that he will need the following material for the work: Fencing poles,
fencing wire, cement and stone, paint and grass seed.
3.1 To determine how much grass seed they will need the caretaker measure the
length and breadth of the sports field. He measured the length to be 162 m and
the breadth 160 m. Calculate the area where the grass will be planted. Use the
following formula:
Area of a rectangle = length x breadth
(2)
3.2 Calculate the perimeter of the sports field in metres. Use the following formula:
Perimeter = 2 (length + breadth)
(2)
3.3 Determine the number of holes the men will dig of the poles will be planted 2 m
apart. There is a gate of 4 m that will be attached to two poles. Use the formula:
Number of holes =
– 1

3.4 Calculate the area of the classroom that has to be painted. The area of the door
is 1,71 m2and the area for the windows is 4,875 m2. Use the formula:
Surface area of classroom = 2(l x h) + 2(b xh) – (area of windows + door), where: l= the length of the classroom b = the breadth of the classroom and
h =the height of the classroom
