Math Workshop
A Transformation of Mathematical Practices
● Whole group, small group, one on one instruction all in one
● Customized learning● MINI lesson + independent work● Purposefully planned, meaningful
tasks
What is Math
Workshop?
● Pretests determine 3 groups○ Low average, Average, High Average
○ Students move up or down based on topic
● No more than 8 kids in a group● Teacher delivers instruction● Students work in groups-
activities tailored to learning levels and styles
● Whole group discussion● Exit Slip to plan for next lesson
How does it work?
Why Do We Teach Using Math Workshop?
Customization
Reaching the whole student. Customizing learning based on
their individual needs.
*Low, High learners
Multiple Exposures
Provides a variety of angles to teach students that make for
flexible problem solvers. Gives repeated experience with math
concepts/skills.
Self ManagementStudents take responsibility for
their own learning, helping others, and making their time
productive.
Motivation15 minute math lesson provides
more time for students to explore mathematical concepts
at their level. Engaged by rotation with little need for
teacher interruption.
● Engage with worthy minds on tasks and important math ideas
● Enjoy time to think, work, and communicate
● Construct math understanding● Notice their own development as
mathematicians
Learners Will….
Key Point
There are multiple avenues to approach and teach the whole child.

What to plan for groups…. ● Problem solving challenges
● Review sheets● Math fact practice● Math games● Content writing in math journals● Enrichment resources● Technology
Materials should be readily accessible~Provide a 3 minute clean up time

How do you utilize the formative assessment data
collected from exit slips?
Managing Math Workshop
● Pretest● Print materials ahead of time● Make activities reusable● Create workstation containers● Define workstation locations● Behavior expectations● Timers● Post it notes● Checklists
