SS4 Demonstrate an understanding of volume by: • selecting and justifying referents for cm3 or m units • estimating volume, using referents for cm3 or m3 • measuring and recording volume (cm3 or m3) • constructing right rectangular prisms for a given volume.

Each student will: • Represent the 3 dimensions required to calculate the volume of a rectangular prism. • Explain the method of determining the volume of containers and use cm3 as the unit
to describe volume. • Estimate the volume of an irregular shape using cm3. • Determine the volume of an irregular shape using words and diagrams.
TEACHER NOTES
• In this assessment task, students will be asked to demonstrate their understanding of volume. They will create, sketch/model, and determine the volume of a container (box) in Part A. In Part B, students will estimate and determine the volume of an irregular shape.
• Materials required: die numbered from 2-7 (change the 1 to a 7), centimeter cubes, and pencil
• Students should use cm3. • Ordering volume is also a part of this outcome but is not addressed in this on-line
lesson. • Students in Grade 5 should not be expected to generalize and use rules until Grade
6 (i.e.: length x width x height). • Early finishers could compare the volume of their container (box) with others from
