CAHSEE PREPMath: Lesson #1
Conversions & Pythagorean Theorem
DO1) How many minutes are in 5 hours?
2) How many seconds are in 7 hours?
*** Congratulations! You just did some conversions!

LET’S MEMORIZE SOME UNITS OF MEASURE!
Make 8 Flash Cards for the Following:Volume 1 Cup= 8 Ounces1 Pint = 16 Ounces1 Quart = 2 Pints1 Gallon= 4 QuartsLength1 mile= 1.6 km 1 meter = 3.28 feet1 foot = 12 inches1 yard = 3 feet
PART 1: CONVERSION NOTES
NOTES What are Conversions?- Changing one unit of measurement into
a different unit - Ex. minutes to seconds, km to mile,
ounces to pounds, etc.- You’ll need to set up a Rate of
Conversion. * Since 16 ounces = 1 pound you
would write it as : 1 pound 16 ounces
* 1 mile = 1.6 km would be written as: 1 mile
1.6 km
EXAMPLE/GUIDING QUESTION Let’s all turn to page 447 in the binder
and work out the following problem: If Jill is Driving at 65 miles per hour,
what is her approximate speed in kilometers per hour ( 1 mile = 1.6 km)
HOW TO SOLVE (PG 447)
1) Write Rate of Conversion followed by = sign and a fraction bar
1 mile = _______1.6 km2) Match the units of the other value.1 mile = 65 mile1.6 km 3) Fill in variable for what questions is asking you
to find.1 mile = 65 mile1.6 km x hours
4) Let’s Cross Multiple
LET’S LOOK AT ONE MORE EXAMPLE & PRACTICE Please Turn to page 448 Let’s Go over Example Now Turn to page 452 solve questions #
1-6 Students will be called to solve
problems on the board.
PYTHAGOREAN THEOREM NOTES
WHAT IS A RIGHT TRIANGLE?
It is a triangle which has an angle that is 90 degrees.
The two sides that make up the right angle are called legs.
The side opposite the right angle is the hypotenuse.

THE PYTHAGOREAN THEOREM
In a right triangle, if a and b are the measures of the
legs and c is the hypotenuse, then
a2 + b2 = c2.Note: The hypotenuse, c, is always the longest side.
FIND THE LENGTH OF THE HYPOTENUSE IF A = 12 AND B = 16.
122 + 162 = c2
144 + 256 = c2
400 = c2
Take the square root of both sides.
20 = c
2400 c
EXAMPLES & PRACTICE Turn to pg 450 and Let’s Review Problem Now you practice problems on pg. 454 #
1-4
EXIT SLIP1. If Robert is Driving at 50 miles per
hour, what is her approximate speed in kilometers per hour ( 1 mile = 1.6 km)
2. Find the length of the hypotenuse if a = 5 and b = 7.
