Occupational Area: Broadcasting and Digital Media

CTE Concept(s): PBZA03.01.01.01 Analyze the business and economic factors that influence programming, content, and distribution for public, commercial and educational purposes. CTE Standard: Demonstrate the ability to develop a complete journalism or broadcast project.

Math Concepts: Rate card – multiplication and addition

• Common Core SS Math Standard: Reason quantitatively and use units to solve problems.

• N-Q.1. Use units as a way to understand problems and to guide the solution of multi-step problems; choose and interpret units consistently in formulas; choose and interpret the scale and the origin in graphs and data displays.

• N-Q.2. Define appropriate quantities for the purpose of descriptive modeling.

N-Q.3. Choose a level of accuracy appropriate to limitations on measurement when reporting quantities.

Lesson Objective: Determine how to build a profitable radio station understanding rate cards and union/scale wages.

Materials: Radio station rate cards, AFTRA President, examples of portfolios

THE "7 ELEMENTS" TEACHER NOTES (and answer key)

1. Introduce the CTE lesson. Radio station rate cards, AFTRA/SAG contracts, examples of class rate cards.

2. Assess students’ math awareness as it relates to the CTE lesson.

Ask students to research and review PDX rate cards and compare to Seattle, Los Angeles, and Eugene rate cards. Have students review different rates.

3. Work through the math example embedded in the CTE lesson.

Have students work on a personal rate card for their radio station. Share the example produced by Instructor

4. Work through related, contextual math-in-CTE examples.

Compare the rate card balance to that of the costs of hiring personnel for the same shifts.

5. Work through traditional math examples.

Percentages, multiplication, subtraction

6. Students demonstrate their understanding.

Complete the rate card and compare with the costs of hiring their staff. Student will share their results.

7. Formal assessment.

Student notebook of the radio station project will be turned in for Instructor review.

Traditional Math – UNIT RATE For each find the unit rate.

1. $60 for 8 hours

2. $14 for 90 pounds

3. An 8 ounce bottle costs $6.50. What is the cost per ounce?

4. An advertisement sells for $1500 for 4 hours. What is the cost per hour for that advertisement?

5. You are paid $3000 per month for 170 hours of work. What is your rate per

hour? Find each.

1. You are paid $7.50 per hour. What will your pay (gross pay) be after working 24 hours in one week?

2. For the problem above, how much would you expect to be paid if the time you worked was the same for 4 weeks?

3. Which is best, buying grape juice at $3.45 for 16 ounces or $7.15 for 48 ounces?

4. You can buy paint for $3.75 per gallon. How much should 5 gallons cost. 5. Which is the better buy, $.23 per ounce or 32 ounces for $3.16?
