The following is meant to be a quick review of Math 7.

It is meant to:

help you understand how your Math Education has been and will be developed

allow you to figure out where your strengths and weaknesses may be

allow you to get to know your teacher and for your teacher to get to know you

Unit 1   Patterns & Relations

1. What is a variable? Write a definition and/or give an example of it.

Pull

PullPossible Answer:

Variables represent numbers in equations.

They can be symbols like an ice cream cone, or simply letters like the letter A.

2. Solve the following Algebraic Expression.

6 r + 3 given that r = 2

PullPull

Substitute 2 for r in the expression.

6 x ( 2 )  +  3

BEDMAS says to Multiply first.

So we are left with

12 + 3

Which equals     15.

Unit 2     Integers

You dealt with the more difficult adding and subtracting integers.  This year, we will be focussing on multiplying and dividing them.  It is often much easier.

List the RULES to ADD and SUBTRACT integers.             You can draw pictures if it's

easier.  Think of examples like (+1) + (1)  =  ?

Aug 209:32 AM

Rule Example

Two like signs become a positive sign +(+)  3+(+2) = 3 + 2 = 5

−(−) 6−(−3) = 6 + 3 = 9

Two unlike signs become a negative sign +(−)  7+(−2) = 7 − 2 = 5

−(+) 8−(+2) = 8 − 2 = 6

Rules to recall Simply Put:

Math 8 Start.notebook

6

September 10, 2013

Aug 209:22 AM

Rules to recall in detail:

No Sign Means Positive :  if a number has No Sign, it usually means that it is a positive number     Ex: 13 is really +13

Adding positives is just simple addition 2+3=5

Subtracting positives is just simple subtraction like 6  3 = 3, unless you have

a smaller number first like 5  6 =  1

Aug 209:25 AM

Tougher ones to Remember:

Subtracting a Negative is the same as adding

   6  (3) = 6 + 3 = 9

Subtracting a Positive or Adding a Negative uses SUBTRACTION

   6  (+3) = 6  3 = 3    (Easier to think about)

   5 + (7) = 5  7 = 2
