Textbook: Elementary Statistics using the TI83/84 Plus Calculator, 3rd ed. (ISBN 0-321-64148-5 ), by Mario Triola. If you want to use the 2nd edition, you may, but be aware that the homework sets will be somewhat different. There are copies of the text available in the ILC, Scotts Valley, Aptos Campus library and the Math Learning Center (MLC). The Student Solutions Manual is optional. 2. A TI-83/84 Plus or Silver Edition calculator is required. It is okay if you do not have the “plus” version of the calculator. Students possessing an alternate calculator must take responsibility for being able to complete the material. See www.rentcalculators.org for information about renting a TI-83or 84 Plus. Notices are also posted in the MLC. Class website: http://www.cabrillo.edu/~mladdon/math12/Math12.htm Course Outcomes By the end of the course, your success will be clearly demonstrated by the following skills: 1. Analyze and organize a set of data using the techniques of descriptive statistics. 2. Analyze and develop the integrity, meaning, and mechanics of both the confidence interval and hypothesis testing reasoning processes using descriptive statistics and probability. 3. Evaluate certain inferential statistical problems and decide how to produce estimates of and decisions about certain population parameters using the confidence interval and hypothesis testing reasoning processes. Student Responsibilities Your success strongly depends on your organization, motivation, determination and commitment to this course. All of these attributes will allow you to prioritize your schedule so that you have the amount of time necessary to complete this course. It is your responsibility to keep up with the material even if you miss class. If you do not attend class for more than two weeks, you may be dropped from the course. Contact me immediately if you have scheduling problems so we can find a solution. Accommodations and Assistance The Math Learning Center (Room 1074) and the Watsonville ILC (4410) are both excellent locations for drop-in tutoring. Exams Before each exam I will provide a review for the exam. I will provide a packet of notes at each exam – “Formulas and Tables.” If you do not have a copy of this, there is one with the text in the MLC you may copy if you wish. You may also download the notes from our class website. (The link is near the bottom of the page.) In addition, a 3"x5" index card of notes may be used for each of the first three exams, and a page of notes may be used on the final. You may use your calculator. No cell phones, PDAs or other devices are allowed. There are no make-ups for the exams and exams may not be taken late. If you miss one exam due to an excused absence, your final exam will be worth 300 points instead of 200. A second missed exam will result in being dropped from the course. If you are caught cheating on an exam, you will receive 0 points for that exam. If you are caught cheating a second time, you will be dropped from the course. Homework You will complete a collection of written work, to be turned periodically. I’ll assume you have checked your work and asked questions before you turn it in. Please staple your work neatly and be sure your name is on it. Labs Several projects will be handed out during the semester. These are due by each exam. See separate handouts. For each exam, you will turn in 2 of 3 possible things: a “statistics @ work” report, a “data to decision” problem, and a lab. You may earn up to 10 points each exam period. Here is my expected pacing for the course. Pay attention to the exam dates!

We will skip Sections 4-6, 4-8, 5-5, 6-7, 10-4 through 10-6, 11-4 and 12-3 as well as chapters 13 and 14. Chapter 15 (sections 2 and 3) provides a nice overview/summary of the text. The final exam will be cumulative, but with a slight emphasis on the last 4 chapters.
